Recommended grocery stops on San Felipe route

ursidae69 - 12-5-2011 at 05:51 PM

Hey folks,

I'm doing another trip this winter and I wanted to get my provisions in Mexico this trip rather than arriving all laden with wal-mart groceries. ha

I'm crossing the east Mexicali border at lunch time on Sat Dec 24th and heading to San Felipe and points south for a week.

Is there a store Nomads recommend along the way or in San Felipe? Just general groceries, tequila, and beer is what I need.

Thanks!

DJ Market

As you enter the town area of San Felipe....Mar Caribe Sur to your right, at the roundabout.....go down Mar Caribe Sur a block and a half. It be on your right side. Butcher...to fresh veggies...everything is there...Americana brands too. Good service. It's a large store. Tip the little child that is bagging your goods.

You can get EVERYTHING in San Felipe...Propane...Filtered water ...vet.

In the same block or so...you'll see a fish market. Very good to buy from.

La Vaquita on Chetumal is a good store, also Pelicano on Hwy 5 as you go into town. If DJ's is open likly both of these also.Actually I prefer La Vaquita.

If you really want to get an early jump on groceries, while in Mexicali, stop at a CALIMAX or SORIANA, markets. They similar in size to the US markets and are somewhat similar to a SUPERWALMART because they carry more than just groceries. Groceries are high quality and VERY reasonably priced. Their booze is also very inexpensive.

Good info ...we go there too at times. Easy in...easy out for access to their store from the route to SF.

The mention of booze, as in liquor, I walked in the
Duty Free store in San Ysidro just before the
border. Saw a plastic jug, looked somewhat short
of a gallon of Bacardi Rum, it was either $12 or $14
dollars, quite cheap, it was $29+ at Rite Aid in
the US. Not that I'm encouraging drinking
We shop La Vaquita market as well as DJ's
Don't know of any TRUE Beer Depositos in SF,
as in yrs past, the places that sold case beer
most have become sorta mini marts, if I was getting
a lot of groceries, I might hit the mentioned Mexicalli
Calimax if convienent
