amigos, we have a situation and I am wondering how you all have handled it ....

recently, many kids in town have gotten quads - big ones that are really loud. they zoom by the house (which other than this has zero traffic) all afternoon long and all day long on the weekends

in order to zoom up and down the dunes and the beach in front of us ....

I personally like quads and we have one - but the noise is unnerving. any suggestions ? any other town had to deal with this ??

Seriously though, try the cops, try talking to them. Other than that, good luck getting them to buy mufflers. The newer performance quads may have a spark arrester, but they let you hear the power.

You could have a little talk with the constable explaining how operating these vehicles on public streets and the beach is illegal and ask that he do his job by enforcing the law.

You probably already are in good standing with the cops so I would ask the one you like the most if you could call him the next time they're riding in front of your place. Here we deal with the parents of the American kids.

We have issues with street bikes and such here at the farm......scaring the horses. I finally went out there to the street and offered the kids 20 bucks to use their toy....on some other street.

You may offer these quad runners kids some cash to go away.....I bet they be kissing you.

I suggest you:
1) talk to the individuals, express your concerns, and ask them what solution they can suggest before you take the next step of putting sand in their gas tanks :biggrin:

2) Talk to their parents if riders are under 18 years old and ask them what solutions they suggest :saint:

3) Suggest they ride SLOWLY in town areas and , as a community, decide where the SLOW zones are and where the LET HER RIP zones are.

Your community is too small to set up a war....and that doesn't seem to be your style anyways

You tell a kid to "take it somewhere else"...and see if they comply for some "old geezer" :-) I hardly see giving them a few bucks to go away is a bribe.

Perhaps they have removed their mufflers? They shouldn't sound THAT loud unless they are in you yard... However, I do agree that a chat with them or their partents is in order... They have the entire Baja peninsula to play in, so could they please not play in front of your home... that's all...

I really like #3. Seems to me that a community solution is the way to go. You certainly don't want to be in the situation of being the gringa that killed fun.

David K, of COURSE they took out the baffles! They're kids, and the noise is half the fun.

You could also tell them that running a straight pipe will warp and then burn their valves, it may not matter to the kids, but it sure will get the parents attention.

Hhhhmmmmmmm. After much study in regards to this matter, IMHO you've got a problem without a solution. Or maybe if you try a solution, you will have created another problem. Kids normally don't like to be 'told' or even asked, though I would admit, asking would have a better chance to be received with open ears, than the telling part. I like the 'bribe' idea. But only problem there, is every kid in town with a quad is going to be dropping by, for his 'part' of the solution. Sooooo, how much money do you have? (just kidding) But then, what if the unmufflered trucks & cars start coming by, knowing that you will pay them to drive somewhere else.? My my my. this is a puzzling dilemma!! I hope there is an ez solution. I hate quads, tri's, & jet skies. Only because I require peace & solitude. Those won't provide you with it.

I feel your pain Blanca....we have the same problema here...the house behind the campground has kids who got some quads and they constantly just drive around and around and around spinning up dust and noise beyond tolerable. They were doing doughnuts in the camp and it took several complaints to get them to keep off private property so now they zoom up and down the street and sneer at me real nasty...not much we can do unfortunately...but I'm all ears on this one too

It will pass. As long as they are not on your property, grin and bear it.

Our neighbor's kids have quads too. We cringe when we see them pull up for their summer vacation. At first they circled us like wild Indians, giant grins on their faces, most likely looking for a reaction. I did walk over and remind them that they had the entire desert to ride their quads on, would they please respect our front yard, and they did. The large rocks I put along the edges helped a bit too.

Eventually someone falls off and gets hurt, tires go flat, money runs tight for fuel, carbs get gunked and the novelty of bugging the gringo wears off.

The generator that they run 24/7 is another thing, entirely.

I have seen in been in trucks with more BFG failures than I want to mention... Their popularity is huge, but advertising and shear numbers seen may be why. Anyway, these are the first Hankooks I have ever tried... so far they are great, and affordable!

When I was working for the Feds, the Hankooks were the "low bidder" so we bought them---------but I have to admit that they were good (tho not as good as BFG AT KO's). You get what you pay for, normally. YOU are the anomoly--------and YOU can NEVER ride in my truck------you're the BFG "bad luck" kid!!!! :lol:

BUT, I'm also a motor head, and one of those kids has a really sweet 350 two stroke twin with tight chambers and pretty good cans. For an old two smoke guy, it sounded verrry sexy when he visited our camp.

if you ask before you gain their respect, you may get a typical teenager response of them doing the opposite of what you asked. teenagers are a good example of the principle that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction :lol:

do other neighbors experience same problem? if so, get together for a solution. i suspect the noise problem is community-wide, and the best solution is for community to establish a noise ordinance to prevent aimless-back-and-forth atv riding near houses (are they going back and forth all day because it is their form of "cruising?"), and keep speed and acceleration to a minimum when near houses.

The solution seems pretty easy considering what you do to help the community with surfboards, skateboards and bikes. Put the word out if the atv's continue their assault that you will no longer be providing those items. The peer pressure should put a stop to this asap.

Les did want to put nails and speed bumps and a rope - none of these suggestions went over well with me ...

MOST of the kids do in fact stay away once I ask them nicely but there are a bunch that are disrespectful and could care less and they drive us nuts....try waking up form a siesta with roarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr in your ears

Blanca, so far I kept quiet. But a rope could kill someone. Small towns like ours don't really have ordinances. Usually a quiet request works. I think I will throw some nails out on shell beach to stop the illegal beach driving.

Most of the ideas are from people who don't have to live there. Remember, you do.

I'm sure that the rope idea was to lay a large diameter rope across the road, like a small speed bump. We have a few of those in town. But that might be fun to blast over on a good quad. :yes:

I love to ride but not in front of peoples properties or camps. Is there a place past the cemetery that with the help of the local backhoes and some community involvement that you all can build a track? The prob is they're likely cruising so you could create a "cooler" place to ride and hang out. Like what skate parks have done. Very small investment with a peaceful outcome.
P.S. Blanca can we get oysters in a couple weeks?

There are solutions to every problem. Many kids and seniors simply have habits, it's hard to break a habit if it's convenient to continue, make it inconvenient. Without saying a word, simply put rocks in strategic locations that form a path farther away or spread jagged rocks and choyo cactus in a random order to discourage riders there or encourage them to slow down, perhaps a large log could help. Eventually the riders will find themselves going elsewhere and slowing down nearby.

Secondly you could formalize community ideals about driving quads in the region and discuss flora and fuana and so forth. Make posters and paint wood signs in the area. Plant plants where riders should not ride. And ask for support nicely.

Eventually after a few years it will improve after a few starts and stutters to improve. It might also help to know the law and communicate that to a higher up in enforcement.

Be careful what you ask for. In my opinion, retired seniors are the worst offenders for driving loud quads inappropriately within the community. Kids driving quads offroad has some merit, seniors driving quads to the neighbors make no sense at all.

Too bad there are so many antagonistic/ dangerous suggestions made regarding this issue. Before you bring the vengeful big guns out, TRY the conversation route.

As a rider, I would respect a person's position more if they used their brains and talked to me than if they tried to cut my head off with a rope/wire barrier or by throwing nails on the road.

This is a community issue, not just BB's...

I believe the area giving access to the dunes and beach is a public road.Don't think rocks, bolders, nails, etc would be very wise.

Just kidding of course, it took me back to when I was shot off my motorcycle with rock salt by the old fart who's property I was crossing to get to my riding spot, I didn't appreciate what he did then but I understand now.
