Cerveza en barril en Baja?

Hook - 12-9-2011 at 04:31 PM

For those of you who frequent fine (or othewise) drinking and eating establishments in Baja, what beers on tap are you finding?

Really, I'm wondering if you are able to buy the excellent Chope clara and oscuro beers from Modelo. They seem like a lager and an amber ale, respectively. Both are delicious, IMO, and are probably around 5% alc.; the ale probably being a little higher. These beers are dispensed by special machines made it Brazil that keep the beer right around 0-1 degree C, all the time.

Negra Modelo is also available by the keg over here.

Tecate's answer is Indio which is pretty milquetoast by comparison.

Tecate Rojo and Models Especial are also found, though not common.

What about over in, uh, The Baja?? Anything draught beers of note?

In La Paz we have all of those mentioned. I'm not sure there is a distinction between Chope, which we first found in Merida and the Modelo Clara or Oscura. I can vouch for the fact that the Agencia stocks both, most of the time, and the kegerator in our house has the oscura most of the time. At 462p/30 liters, it is a good price.

The Tecate store here stocks Indio and Tecate Red. The price is even less than Models, at about 360p/30liters, but they have a pretty hefty deposit on the keg compared to Modelo.

We have only recently gotten Keg beer from Modelo in our local Cantinas. Frank's has delicious Negra Y Clara at great prices for Happy Hour! It would be nice to see more beers enter the fray?!:o Happy Hour Specials equal onion rings, fries, or shrimp!! Hamburger and fries for $50 pesos. I would like to see more choices of Cerveza en Barril. Tio

As far away from Labatt's as possible.....by the way, you still owe me a sixer of Bohemia.

Update on this. In TJ, Modelo has bee promoting Chope heavily. To the point that they have opened several "Coperias". One guess as to what they sell.

I also found out that there are a few bars downtown that have Bohemia on tap.

My visit tomorrow is looking better and better. Maybe I'll just stop work at lunchtime and do a sampling the rest of the day. End up at Chiltepinos, down from the office for XX Ambar de Barril.

WOW, Bohemia on tap! That would be nice to try. Never seen it. I take it that it's the Bohemia clara? Bohemia is my favorite Mexican lager.

I met one guy over here who CLAIMS to have done marketing for Bohemia many years ago. He claims that Bohemia's unique taste (that slightly spicy, crackery grain flavor) is due to using some RICE syrup in the recipe. I can see that. It has minimal maltiness, yet more flavor than the other lagers from Mexico.

Wouldn't pass the Rheinheitsgebot. Balt, Marley, Hops, Water. Nada Mas.

Not sure if it's clara, obscura, or both. Will find out (first hand) and report back.

Aren't you forgetting the Weihenstephaner Hefe? Other wise it's only flavored water......nada mas?

Roberto - 12-15-2011 at 07:28 AM

Balt and marley, sticking to my guns.

Actually, I had one ingredient too many. No malt originally. And yeast wasn't mentioned because it hadn't been discovered at the time.

You've confirmed this? Because I find it hard to believe.

This is what I know is available in Baja "en barril":

Tecate family: Tecate, Dos XX's and Dos XX's Ambar

Modelo family: Corona, Modelo, Chope reg & dark

TJ offers a few of their beers Guera and Morena en barril.

baja beer

captkw - 12-15-2011 at 12:02 PM

this time of year,,IF you look for it, "noche bueno" a xmas bock..a treat..if you like a dark beer...last winter I found  a beer brewed in the los cobo's area that was off the hook !! I think it frim a micro brewry called of course baja brewy..I had 2 different flavors and LIKED both of them..and I used to find a bear called "Indio" but don't know if it's still around...

Roberto - 12-15-2011 at 01:12 PM

That's what my co-workers have told me. They live, work and were born there, so they certainly should know.

Confirmation will to follow soon.

Roberto - 12-15-2011 at 01:17 PM

I am going to disagree with just about everyone on this board (I think). For the most part, I don't find Noche Buena anything special. Often way too light in flavor, especially for a dark beer, never mind a bock, which this is supposed to be. Negra Modelo has the same problem.

Isn't it de barril? Also, you forgot Indio, which is certainly available, though I really don't care for it.

Indio

Hey....Bob...you still here? Your wife is having a hembra fest today so I'm sure you have to leave the house.
Wanna head down to Sharky's for a couple?
Let me know soon. I'm gasping.

Who you talkin' to, gooomba. You have to be specific here as there's more than three involved, like in your useless presence on Fulano's site.
C'mon, Robozo, tell the big world what's on your mind.

And....don't use those nasty words here. This is a class site....something a piece of sht like you should understand.

Carry on...dikhead.

DENNIS - 12-15-2011 at 05:38 PM

TICK TICK TICK TICK......................waiting for your gracious reply

Burro?

Dave - 12-15-2011 at 06:58 PM

Does it taste like chicken? I guess anything's OK as long as you wash it down with enough beer.
