Hiway from Cabo to Todos Santos

Santiago - 12-12-2011 at 07:58 PM

A recent returnee from one of the Cabo resorts said they did not drive their rental car to Todos Santos because someone else staying at the hotel said that the road was so bad they all got car sick???
What's up with this road?

They are widening it to 4 lanes...

There are lots of areas involving driving from pavement to dirt to pavement, some unpaved areas are slow going with lots of dust. Upside is the traffic keeps moving. Stuck behind a semi won't be fun and being in a hurry will make the drive less fun. It helps to be familiar with this road. For newcomers, it might be stressful. For those coming from Cabo resorts, skip Todos.

I was on Hwy 19 between Cabo and Todo Santos in July and November and it is most defentley helter skelter. They are improving the road for the 2012 G20 Summit that is to be held in Cabo.

They are putting in many new bridges and some of the areas you have to be very careful due to the lack of any kind of markings to show which lane is the correct lane, but, there are no issues regarding the type of auto you should drive. Any small car will make it with no problem. Just make sure that you stop at K65 and have a Chili Relleno and a cerveza or 4!

Funny

I got this from the Gazette today via email

Apparently they are urging you to go fast and lay on the horn...!:o

It’s doable but it’s still pretty torn up

The widening of the road to Todos Santos from a twolane to a fourlane will be finished in February, swears up and down Carlos Lascurain, the local rep of the ministry of communications and transport. With a straight face, he says this.

“We have run into small setbacks,” said Lascurain, who explained there are five different construction companies at work, with a final cost of $26 million.

Right now there are very long patches of hard packed and smooth 40 mile an hour dirt. Yes it’s dirt, but it’s fast dirt, and the worker guys scatter pretty quick if you apply the horn and not the brakes.

Lascurain also said that the start on the famously overly promised new fourlane between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose has been rescheduled and should be finished in November of 2013. Operative word being should.

Drove this stretch of road at the end of November and will be driving it again end of December. It is slow going. The drive takes much longer than usual right now. But when this construction is done, it will make the drive to TS very easy for the Cabo tourists. Right now I wouldn't recommend they take the drive to TS unless they have lots of extra time and patience. We drove it in the rain so dust was not an issue. I would expect it to be very dusty when it's dry.

We drove the entire peninsula and was more bothered by the construction between Santo Tomas & Ensenada than we were from CSL to TS.

Miguel's chili rellenos are 'off the chain'. He also makes micheladas. It's a 'must do' in TS.

Todos Santos as a day trip for Cabo vacationers has been a biggie for many years. The restaurants and galleries have hosted numerous folk who are staying at Los Cabos hotels.

I traveled this stretch in October. It seemed to me to be an extra magnitude of awful. But just maybe since I began my day in Loreto, I was just tired and cranky by that time.

I did talk to a couple of merchants in Todos who complained that their business was way down due to the construction.

That said, when this is completed, the trip from Los Cabos to La Paz will be really sweet.

Drove this road 2 weeks ago. Friends have driven it in the past few days. Maybe 1.5 hours from Cabo to Todos, then another hour to LP.

For anyone but tourists from the Cabo resorts, this road is NOT a problem. Lots of dirt, lots of construction, lots of zigging and zagging, but it's NOT a big deal.

UNLESS you're a Cabo resort tourist prone to car sickness.
