Valentine's Day? It never occured to me that it would rouse excessive larceny in a cop. It should be just the opposite. The cops should pull people over and give them money.

Baja cops are so romantic. Stealing from gringo's in order to give their honeys flowers and chocolatey stuff.

About X-mas, you're absolutly right.
Another reason to stay put is the traffic. high vacation time and so is Semana Santa. don't drive the highway if you can avoid it.

My friend Jim Dandy who lived in La Purisima and passes away there told me this story once.He moved there about three years before this

Every Nov he would start getting pulled over by the local cops. He said all year he could do just about anything and get away with it because he did so much for the community. One day while driving with another gringo he was lamenting this and the guy said. Don't you know they need to buy presents for there wife and kids. So for the next ten years before he died on Nov 1st he would get in his old ranger drive(with beer inhand) up to the police station and give them 250.00 dollars. They never bothered him after that. He told me he felt like it wasn't a bribe but he was just buying christmas gifts for the local wifes and kids.

Some will take offense to this and to you I say maybe baja isn't for you. this is life there and he learned how to live it.
Many of you here knew or knew of Jim. He was one of the great gringos. We miss him dearly

Merry Christmas
Mick

The cops target anyone with money. The gente insist on paying them the equiv. of twenty dollars a day and the the transitos pay for everything including gasoline. I feel this abortion is going to see changes sooner rather than later. Mexicanos got incensed when they had to pay a patrulla federal mordida for speeding but now they're going ballistic when they find out that the PFP will arrest motorists who try to bribe them.
