Highway 395 and Mono

DianaT - 12-16-2011 at 07:40 PM

Just cannot drive down 395 and not stop just to admire Mono Lake

We were headed toward Bishop, one of our favorite towns.

BornFisher - 12-16-2011 at 10:54 PM

Well those pics are something to admire all right!
Looks like you guys picked a perfect travel day.
Hope you went to the "Whoa Nelly Deli" for some great food.
Thanks for the pics.

Diana, your 395 photos just stirred up an old memory. After my first wife had died from her battle with cancer, I decided that I was going on a road trip, I did not know where I was headed, but I thought I would know when I had arrived. A very good friend decided he would go with me and off we went… lunch in Reno and south on 395. After traveling for quite some time in silence, I turned on some music and the old song “He stopped loving her today” came on the radio, I looked over at my friend with big tears running down my face, to see just as many coming from his eyes. We drove for several miles down that isolated road with big crocodile tears running down our faces and onto our shirts, this event ended up being a turning point in my healing and acceptance of what had happened in my life. Thanks for the memory. JH

Bajamedic, I believe the Eastern Sierra and Owens Valley are very special places and your story brought both tears and a big smile to me. Thank you.

Thank you BornFisher. In all the many times we have been there, I don't think we have ever eaten there----so now, we have another excuse to head that way again.

BajaGringo - 12-17-2011 at 09:56 AM

I have made that drive many times. Thanks for the memories...

Jack Swords - 12-17-2011 at 10:08 AM

Thanks Diana...my favorite area of Ca. Most hotels dog friendly, preserved ghost town of Bodie just up from Mono, drive east from Bodie and Aurora ghost town is impressive (not preserved). Mark Twain spent some time there and Aurora was once the county seat of Mono County Ca until it was discovered that the town is in Nevada. East of Aurora are many ghost towns attesting to great populations during the gold rush.

I did not know that about Aurora---thanks!

durrelllrobert - 12-17-2011 at 10:20 AM

Did you happen to go to Bodie also? About 18 miles north of Lee Vining/ Mono Lake on 395 and east about 12 miles on CA 270

It is a great place, but we did not go there this trip. Time to go again as the last trip out there was in 2008. My first trip to Bodie was back in the mid 60s when one could drive right up to the town and there were a lot more sage grouse than tourists.

Spearo - 12-17-2011 at 01:50 PM

Nice pics...its a beautiful drive.

I always stop in Bishop and eat at Raymond's Deli, great sandwiches and an interesting atmosphere.

Bajahowodd - 12-17-2011 at 04:57 PM

A trip I've made more times than I can count. Friends' family have a cozy bungalow on the South shore of Tahoe. and a bunch of us made a trip to Harrahs for Thanksgiving for over two decades. Harrah had just a casino there when we started. No hotel.

This dates back to when Bill Harrah and his friendly competitor Harvey Gross actually hung around their casinos. Anyone have a clue as to why Harvey built a Polynesian restaurant on the top floor of his hotel?

But, for some strange reason I just cannot erase my memory of old ladies chain smoking at the slots in the Topaz Lake casino.:lol::lol:

395

mcfez - 12-18-2011 at 07:12 AM

Great shots!
The 395 is one of my favorite areas of California. Most Californians dont have a clue about it!

Did you know that many Hollywood western movies were filmed off the 395?

Thanks

John's grandfather was a grip in Hollywood and worked on several movies shot in Lone Pine many years ago. Lone Pine now has a great little Movie Museum. We were there a few years back when they first opened it----they even have the car Bogart drove up the old Whitney Portal road in High Sierra--- I have some pix hiding somewhere on this computer.

Lone Pine and the Alabama Hills are wonderful. Even Gunga Din was filmed there---imagine Elephants in the Alabama Hills. :-)

yep, the Alabama Hills. During the 10 years I worked for the Navy at China Lake I think I explored every inch of all the country surrounding 395.

Thanks Nancy----it seems like many around here love that part of California--- probably because of the beautiful wide-open spaces and such interesting places to visit.

Not too far from Lone Pine and the fun Movie Museum is the town with the greatest junk art---Keeler. Last time we went through Keeler, this jewel was not there anymore, but there is a lot there to see and enjoy.

After you drive it the first time, you may find yourself wanting to drive it again with lots of side trips.

If you get off of the graded dirt roads and walk around the old movie locations you can often spot discards from filming. We have found many 5 in 1 blanks used in the old westerns

Alabama Hills

bajaguy - 12-20-2011 at 09:16 AM

It's fun to watch old movies filmed there and try and find the filming locations. Aslo you can search on e-bay and other internet sites and try and find still photos taken on the movie sites, then match up the topography and find where the photos were taken..

The film museum is a must.

Also bring along good topo map quads (1:24,000' and 1:62,500' scale) and a hand held GPS. Do your research and map work before you go. Sort of like Geo Caching!!!!

It has been along time. I lived in Ridgecrest, Ca. and passed quite abit of time in Owen's Valley, Mono Lake, Convict Lake, etc. Lotsa memories. Thanks for the photos.

tripledigitken - 12-20-2011 at 10:13 AM

Thanks for the trip through one of my favorite places.

I lived on the base (China Lake), graduated from Sherman E Burroughs (Class of 60) and also worked on the base for a brief period out of high school.
I enjoyed hiking the hills.

Baja12valve - 12-20-2011 at 10:44 AM

Love Owens Valley, the valley that time forgot. As a family we have camped at Whitney for years, been to the top 4x. I have ridden my bicycle over Sonora Pass, down to Tioga Pass, up to Yosemite. Also I have turned left to go up to Walker, over Monitor Pass to Markleville Hot Springs. That view from Conway Summit overlooking Mono is just spectacular. The descent down is just killer!

BornFisher - 3-9-2015 at 09:11 PM

Aye aye aye--- this is such a beautiful time of year to enjoy the 395 corridor. If the yellowtail in northern Baja would leave me alone, I`d be camping up Lone Pine way. To those who do go, the movie museum in Lone Pine is special. Found this video that reminds me of the one they show in the museum!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJlD5roDqNw

BTW at 2:22 in the vid, there is a car that I believe is in the museum.

get off of the graded dirt roads and walk around the old movie locations...

At the museum in Lone Pine, they sell the Movie Road self-guided tour book for $2. It has some of the movie locations, GPS coordinates, correlation with the road, and some old photos. It is very picturesque any way you enjoy it.
Movie Road is off Whitney Portal Road 2.7 mi - turn right.

Pompano - 3-10-2015 at 04:50 PM

Watched the old movie "Nevada Smith" last night on TMC. It surely had some terrific scenery from the Owens Valley.

Where can you find baby and smaller seagulls?

Howard - 3-10-2015 at 05:28 PM

They are at Mono Lake, off the 395. It's a beautiful lake and scenery that you can observe from the highway. Lets not forget about Lee Vining. How about Markleeville home of the 10 foot fuzzy headed rattler and the Jackalope.

Just thinking about all the wonderful places around 395 makes me want to plan a trip this Spring or Fall.

ChicaSierra - 3-11-2015 at 09:44 AM

Yes, yes, yes! The weather has been very pleasant
Unfortunately, after several years of drought, local tourist driven communities are suffering and many long time businesses are closing.
When your cooler is filled with yellowtail and you have had your fill of off roading and fishing and surfing Baja....Come visit the Eastside! We would love to see you!
By the way...Bodie and Whoa Nellie Deli are closed right now and will open in... May??
I just planned a 'Stay-cation' when Mom comes to visit at the end of this month....Manzanar internment camp, Lone Pine Film History Museum, Alabama Hills movie sets, Mt. Whitney portal and Death Valley wild flowers . So excited to finally see and experience it all, after driving past the area so many times.:bounce::bounce::bounce:

Skipjack Joe - 3-11-2015 at 10:55 AM

There is great scenery along 395 on the east side but for me the Lee Vining/ Mono Lake area tops it all.

DianaT - 3-11-2015 at 11:25 AM

Gees, this is an old thread! And I wonder which pictures of Mono I started it with.

Oh well, we live her now and enjoy it all everyday. A couple of days ago we were wandering around the Alabama Hills --- horrible light so no pictures, but it is still a beautiful place to be.

Since I forget which pictures I started this with, I thought I would throw in a few just for fun pictures I took a couple of years ago at the Movie Museum in Lone Pine. The fifteen minute history of movies in that area is a presentation WELL worth the time.

So, just for fun, :biggrin::biggrin:

While I wish I would have had a faster lens with me, I just couldn't resist when I noticed the man a few rows in front of us.

Love living here!

How many nomads recognize these scenes?

The only one I feel confidant about is Hopalong Cassidy.

The last one with Kirk Douglas pictured is I believe, "Along the Great Divide".

Pompano - 3-11-2015 at 12:41 PM

I'm wondering if it was Indians or holdup men who eliminated the coach driver?

And isn't that one gal Ida Lupino?
