so why is a passport book now a second-class form of ID at border and rejected at ready lane?

The book doesn't have the "radio chip" in it. Plus, as a side benefit, it's a whole lot easier to carry. Don't forget, mtgoat 666, you really "don't have" to get it. If you're offended, as they say "don't go away mad, just GO AWAY"........:smug:

Thanks mcfez.....;D...I've got the Sentri pass but just went on line and got the passport card. I figure it's a great back up just in case..........whatever happens. I always like to be prepared for the worst.....

Passport Book RFIDs

MrBillM - 12-19-2011 at 05:42 PM

What I read said that the New Passport Books DO include an RFID in the Back Cover.

Given that the cover is substantially thicker than the old one, it seemed reasonable.

THAT isn't TRUE ?

Why make a passport card that kicks ass in all areas, except it's not accepted when flying internationally? So you end up needed multiple fricken passports. Argh.

I'll be interested to see if the ready lane helps us low lifes:spingrin:

Don't see how it couldn't help. If I were you I'd be getting your passport card tomorrow.

DON'T FORGET ONE THING... Just like Sentri lane EVERYBODY IN THE CAR MUST HAVE ONE. I think that's the time savings factor. Then they just have to check the car over......

anyone using the Fast Pass lane at Say Ysidro today was hating life and the waste of their pass. It was full bumper to bumper going nowhere. They ended up closing the lane at the booth. No one was backing out of the lane- so you know there weren't any Mexicans driving those cars... ;)

Trouble with the "fast pass" lane is, it dumped you into just another lane with all the other cars. It was just a little ahead of some of the cars. In the "ready Lane" it'll be a dedicated lane. The key to the success will be if they enforce it like the Sentri lane. So the smart a$$es who think they can play dumb and don't have the documentation are turned around and sent to the back of the line. ALL THE WAY BACK.. .

Actually, all of my family's books have the RFID in it.

[Edited on 12-20-2011 by soulpatch]

OOPS !!! Sorry bout that. My BAD....:O... Didn't know. Shows you how old my passport is. (2005). Guess when I go to the post office tomorrow I'll see if I can get it updated too.

fandango - 12-19-2011 at 07:40 PM

you can use your sentri card in the ready lane. it has the chip.

Yeah I know... I still like the idea of having both just in case. Maybe keep them in seperate places so you always have one somewhere.......
Plus it gives me a feeling of "POWER"............ And I HATE STANDING IN LINE. I did enough of that when I was in the Navy. Today I'll pay just about whatever it takes not to be "IN LINE" or just won't go at all. Just ain't worth it at my age............

soulpatch !!
Please refer to my post above ^^^ BTW..... I haven't seen anywhere that said they wouldn't accept the RFID in the passport. Unless I missed it somewhere...:?:

My attitude...... "It is what it is".
If you've got a passport get a card for $30 or get all three with the Sentri pass. Why not....:?:..:?:..:?: It isn't worth $30 for ten years or $3 a year to sit in that damn line. I don't care if it's $1000 or $100 a year. I'M NOT SITTIN IN THAT 3 HOUR LINE. Get it....:?:..:?:..... Or just sit in the line and we'll wave at you and hand you a cold one as we ZIP by..............
Some how I have a feeling and it's just a feeling that if you were sitting in line for 2 hours with another hour to go and I told you for $30 bucks I could get you through the line right now you'd give it up on the spot. For a 1 time deal. Or at least I woud like to think you would. Wouldn't you ???? Please say yes.....

Ready Lane

bajaguy - 12-19-2011 at 08:32 PM

I hate to throw cold water on this but I don't believe that the Ready Lane is going to solve a lot of the waiting in line problems.

Take a look at the Otay Ready Lanes. Wait times of an hour are common.....plus it's a zoo trying to get into the line.

If you can qualify, SENTRI is the best bet.

Agreed. Thank you, Terry.
But for those who can"t qualify, the passport card will be better. From what I hear the lanes wil be better as dedicated lanes. They'll be the ones behind the Pueblo Amigo Hotel right next to the Sentri lanes when you drop down the hill into the lines.

fandango - 12-19-2011 at 08:47 PM

bajaguy you are so right. take a look at the wait times for the border right now.
otay regular is 1 hour 30 minutes
otay ready is 1 hour 20 minutes.
10 minutes, b*d.
do you think the ready lane is twice as long and they are processing them faster?
kashey, don't go to the border now!!!

Sorry, fandango. But I just checked both times.... Sentri pass lanes are 10 minutes.

http://apps.cbp.gov/bwt/

And with my Sentri pass I come and go at will. 20 minutes being the longest I've ever waited. While the other lanes were 3 hours. Well worth the $25 a year we pay for Sentri....

Cargo Carrier/Roof Rack

bajaguy - 12-19-2011 at 08:57 PM

Quote:
Oh, I'd say yes....
Maybe before next trip.... I need 4 total.
Sure wish I could pull a trailer through Sentri... hmmm, I wonder about a cargo carrier and roof rack.
I will have to check.

Yup, no problems. When we had our SUV, typically used the roof rack and a "Hitch Haul" cargo carrier in the Otay SENTRI lane.

Man that sounds like a nightmare! Great info, and I`m envious how you get this info. I want it!!
Hope the Ready Lanes work out. Remember, when they can check a vehicle through 20 seconds quicker, it helps all lanes.
When they first had the Otay lanes open, it was a holiday! About 10 minutes, maybe 15. BUT then everyone found out and bought cards and things evened out (same time in either type of lane).
Every little bit helps us all!!

One of the walking newspaper vendors gave us his walkie-talkie number and we can call him for updates...

Today I whizzed past them in the regular lanes. Not happy campers, but they didn't back out either. ???

Today (12/20) was the general meeting to get ready to open the SY Ready Lanes next Tuesday 12/27. If they were in those lanes yesterday expecting to get thru quickly they were 8 days too early.

appears the passport book with rfid can be used in ready lane

mtgoat666 - 12-20-2011 at 02:09 PM

the passport book with rfid can be used in ready lane, but text is not clear as mud

here is text from https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/1211/~/ready-la...

Quote:

What documents can I use to enter the Ready Lane?

WHTI-compliant, RFID-enabled cards approved by the Department of Homeland Security include: the U.S. Passport Book and Card; the Enhanced Driver's License (EDL); the Enhanced Tribal Card (ETC); Trusted Traveler Cards (NEXUS, SENTRI and FAST cards); the new Enhanced Permanent Resident Card (PRC) or new Border Crossing Card (BCC).

SENTRI and NEXUS lanes are reserved strictly for the use of SENTRI and NEXUS card holders.

All travelers in the vehicle over the age of 16 must have an RFID-enabled card to use the Ready Lane. Children 15 years old and younger may travel in the Ready Lane with adult travelers if all adults in the vehicle have an RFID-enabled travel card.

U.S. Passport Cards can be obtained through the Department of State.

NEXUS/SENTRI/FAST cards can be obtained through CBP at www.CBP.gov.

Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDL) can be obtained from a local DMV or government office in the states of New York, Washington, Vermont, and Michigan, as well as in the Canadian provinces of Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec, and Manitoba. Note: If you applied and are waiting for the EDL, the receipt or temporary notice you may have received is NOT a valid travel document.

Anyone care to consider, especially you long time border crossers, that the current state of affairs is totally political?

Combine the after 9/11 Bush administration hysteria with the current anti-immigrant stuff in a climate of high unemployment, and what you get are these 2-3 hour back ups at the fence, as if they are going to find terrorists hiding in the trunk of a Honda, or even illegals, who long ago realized they would have to hike across the desert. World gone mad.

Your tax dollars at work.

tsa and cbp are terrorism theater. dumb a$$ citizens think they are protected by this program that counts as its biggest accomplishment hiring the mentally handicapped to staff airport security screenings.

Given that the cover is substantially thicker than the old one, it seemed reasonable.

THAT isn't TRUE ?
