small boat's

captkw - 12-24-2011 at 08:07 AM

hola, the BAJA CATCH is a good map,,but the guy, missed the mark on small boat's for baja. everyone with lot's of time on the sea of cortez,,with it's winter northerns and longer run's to find fish,, has a boat to recommed ??

bajabass - 12-24-2011 at 08:16 AM

How small are we talking here??? When you get a north wind like we are having now, no small boat is a good idea. I'm thinking unsinkable, with a 4 stroke for economy-range. I picked the Triumph 17cc, identical to the one previously posted for sale, just added a T-top and larger bait tank. Easy on fuel, easy beach launch on reasonable firm sand, and it cannot sink!!!!

capn.sharky - 12-24-2011 at 09:21 AM

I like the 23 ft.Panga with 4 stroke Merc. Lightweight, easy to launch and good in most conditions, Very good open floor space. Mine is a center counsel with a large t top.

bajabass - 12-24-2011 at 09:33 AM

Sharky, how much would it cost to duplicate your panga? Find a good used hull, a low hour motor, rig it, a servicable trailer. Are you beach launching or using ramps?

yellowklr - 12-24-2011 at 11:36 AM

Really depends on where you are launching and what type of fishing you are doing.....

mcfez - 12-24-2011 at 11:57 AM

I loved the Baja Catch.

captkw - 12-24-2011 at 04:45 PM

ya,mecfez,, I think I read IT, 10/15 times cover to cover and used the maps for many year's and I personally recommed it, and I tryed using the beer can's,which are only for calm, protected water's at best, and not very safe or comfy..K&T:cool:

Yeah....I for one would never venture out a few miles as they did. No way! The tins are great for inlets and shore fishing.....being light and durable. Chasing Tuna in one.......:lol::lol::lol:

Good luck with with finding the lady

mcfeez

captkw - 12-24-2011 at 05:46 PM

Hola all, mcfeez, beer can's serve a great purpose,,but you don't want tuna's chasing you in one !!:lol::lol: K&T

bajabass - 12-24-2011 at 06:31 PM

So, what is your pick for a Baja boat KW???

captkw - 12-24-2011 at 09:23 PM

baja bass,, TALK IS CHEAP,,but when, you have a small boat that will/does really run circle's around panga's (crap)..did you sea I said panga's...designed by a friend of mine mac sheoer in la paz,,btw his wife mary should \the vote for pres

Alan - 12-24-2011 at 10:31 PM

Every boat is a compromise of one sort or the other. It really all depends on what will meet YOUR needs best. Comfort, economy, speed, safety, passenger capacity, fishability, etc. etc. Determine what is most important to you and then decide what you can still live for those items of lesser importance. For me, for Baja my top choice would be a 21-23' CC with a 4-stroke OB, but I am settling for what I have and that is a 23' walkaround.

captkw - 12-25-2011 at 05:12 AM

merry xmas ,to all baja bass, after year's of running just about any boat ever made,,took a test ride on a small caterman and have never looked back!! well.sometime's, with a chit eating grin as I fly past a grady, boston, panga or anything else on the water, soft, dry and a big little boat, stable at rest and underway,, and please let me have some wind for the ride home,,talk is cheap and boats are not,,so if you really want to find out more,,I fix, repair, and consult about boats for an living and this brand of boat is under the radar .sorta they have made over 50k of them and I have only seen 4 or 5 rigged correctly,hell,,9 out of ten of all boat's are rigged wrong,,folk's by a boat a say,"it came from the factory like that,,gotta be right" I really laugh ,when I see the aft cleat's,installed 2/3 ft forward of the transom...boat's are like women,,,,all guy's love um..but dont really understand um...:lol::lol::lol: merry xmas be safe out there...someday the fish might get a uzi

Floatflyer - 12-25-2011 at 07:24 AM

I wonder what all the tin boats in Los Barriles and the campers in Los Frailes say about going out miles to fish??? I have had a 14 ft Valco and a 15 Gregor on the East Cape and thought nothing of going out 5 miles WITH a radio and using one's brain to pick a decent day. Launching a panga over the sand by yourself could be a real work out. There is always some kind of a shore break even on glassy days. But remember there are some that wear both a belt AND suspenders, people are different!

MERRY XMAS,,BE AVISED, THAT,, THIS IS HOW/WHY I DO SAR IN SNOTY SEA 'S WITH A SMALL BOAT TO RESCUE POB'S THAT Have a boat like all the other boater's,,I have been ,,never mind,,go get an boston,,or really move up in tech advance's and get a panga..I think if you have a min..ck out MOOSE BOATs.com and wacth the vid.....they are late to the ballgame.. but 3yrs ago I sent 2 clients up to them and they could not sell them a boat,,too busy with mil orders.....coast guard AUX foltilla 69-72

bajabass - 12-25-2011 at 08:12 AM

Merry Christmas KW and all!!!

Yeah, I've seen a couple catamarans, mainly the Sea Vee and Twin Vee makes. Very good in the chop as you say. They were out of my price range. Been a few on the Bloody Decks website for sale used, but still too high. I stole my Triumph for 5k. Add the bait tank and T-top, and I'm in it less than 7k total.

That is for a 2002, less than 500 hours when I bought it. Best deal on the best boat at the time.

wessongroup - 12-25-2011 at 08:32 AM

Say there "bass" sounds like ya might be getting some "scales" on ya...

Sounds great, glad it is working out so well for ya both ... Merry Christmas to all

Did you go to school with the Skeeter?

hola,,twin vee's

captkw - 12-25-2011 at 10:15 AM

tween vee's are a great boat, and yes they are pricey,,that said..I dare ya to go drive one at 2 in the afternoon when the wind is up,,that's where they really shine !!PUNCH AND POINT, you will never look at a mono again,,why,,because you would know the simple fact that has been kept from the usa folk's...fact all new zealand and aussie's SAR vessel's are cat's and if you know anything about rough coast's they have them,,to say the least and really are the fish, criuse, camp, family,do it all vessel and love the wind,,easy to launch and pulling up to a island thecat dosenot draw much water,,so you can park it right up on the beach..I have driven panga,s and I can tell you with out a hesatation that the cat I run,,at high speed in25 knot's of wind I will/can and do run circle's around a panga and I mean that I can/will drive my little cat 360 degree's around a panga and it doe's not matter how fast it's going,,GEE ,talk is cheap;;;wanna bet on that ,,I could use a little bit more money.ha,ha..BTW the boat's that I run are catt's and I think are THe oldest caterman company in the us.barr nun,,guess again,,you getter closer...merry xmas all:bounce:

Skeet/Loreto - 12-25-2011 at 10:19 AM

Ole Skeeter spent 27 years owning and operating a 22 Ft. Panga built by Mac Shroyer of La Paz. I ended up with a 70 HP Mercury.
Many good hours of Fishing and going through some rough Seas convinced me it was the boat for me.

I had a built in Bait tank comb for a Mid Seat. It fished good with three people and the Capt.
Good Luck and remember "Experience is the best Teacher"!!!!!

captkw - 12-25-2011 at 10:26 AM

hola, I forgot to tell ya,as that I have run boat's in costa rico, hawiia,,alaska and mexico as a captain,,the little cat's that I'm talking about are seldom up for sell, but they do ocausally hit the market, but are always rigged wrong, that's the down fall that is a sure bet!!feliz navadad!!

merry xmas skeet

captkw - 12-25-2011 at 10:44 AM

FOOL"s are a peso a dozen

bajabass - 12-25-2011 at 11:55 AM

Just a little ribbing KW! Nice boats, though way out of my price range. No closed mind here, just cost conscious. Safe Boating!!!

captkw - 12-25-2011 at 01:58 PM

ya, cost cost a,bit more,,but they make up for it quik,,twice the range vs a mono per liter/gallon of gas...a mono even on plane is pushing the water away,,un like a cat that is riding on a cushion of air and on top of the wave's/water

Mac and Mary Schroyer have turned most of the running of the marina to their son Neil. They are still active in the marina's functioning and can usually be found in and around the Marina de La Paz. Very nice people running a top-notch marina.

captkw - 12-25-2011 at 09:41 PM

hola skeet,,I can agree, , for sure on the experince part and it take's year's of hard knok's,to get it,,LOL that reminded me,year's back I was a captain on 120 footer with 40 POB, any way a good strom was heading down from brisol bay, so I ran south, away from it and thought I would hide between 2 island's, drop the anchor's and it HIT,,could not with all my strengh open the helm door,,now that's some wind, they call call um willaway's in alaska and parking tween two islands make's a venturi,,duh,,school of:lol::lol::lol: hard knok's LOL..LOL K&T

Skeet/Loreto - 12-26-2011 at 01:49 PM

KW
Yes I became friends with the Schoyers and some other People. Sure like La Paz.

When I ordered my boat I told Mac that many of the Panga owners around Loreto were complaining that the front Bottoms were weak, so Mac Started putting Stringers in for Support.

If you really want a Panga I would first stop in Constitution and check that area, There were many for sale several years ago. Next i would go to Loreto and look around or better conttact Alvaro Murillo or his brother Allejo. Then have your boat finished as you want.

If I was 30 years younger and still fishing I would find me a Homelight 4 Cyl. as I once had on my Panga. They are the best I had.

The next best was my last boat a 217 Wellcraft that I converted to a Diesel.

Good Luck
