Hotel/Motel Mulege

capitolkat - 12-27-2011 at 02:11 PM

Last year we traveled up to Phoenix and stayed in Mulege at the Hotel Mulege.. While there is nothing wrong with the place it just wasn't our cup of tea and wondered if there was a little more modern or maybe less rustic recommendation for an overnight as we are again making the trip to Phoenix to visit family and friends.

Thanks-- Norm

Highly recommend Cliff Taylor's place in the Oasis. He has houses for rent and each one of them is immaculate with great beds, lots of hot water and free internet access. His website is www.clementinesbaja.com and he is an excellent resource. We used to stay at the Serenidad but it just got too run down for our taste. We discovered Cliff's and have never stayed anywhere else in Mulege for the past 6 years.

Holiday special $25 per night at Cuesta Real Hotel/RV Park and also the same special at Hotel Casita

Yep. Mulege is not the hotel capital of the world. Serenidad has become very long in the tooth, despite its history. I'd go with the Cuesta Real, too.

I 2nd that!

CaptKat, you be Stylin! Try the Sandals- Mulege in the Oasis or the Sheraton at El Burro?! Glad you have resurfaced lately so back at ya. Mulege is funky like most of Baja! Fly Alaska to Phoenix if you need upscale; Otherwise, deal with it. I hear it's so cold up there a room heater is needed. I slept on a futon with a sheet out at Requeson in October, pure Bliss! Smiles Tio

Yeah, Cuesta Real... great location, can walk to town for great food/margaritas at El Candil and/or walk to the Sernidad for a great meal/c-cktails....

Another vote for Cuesta Real! Seor Pepe the proprietor is a fine gentleman and will make sure your stay is a happy one! A well run operation.

capitolkat - 1-23-2012 at 04:29 PM

Based upon the concensus we stopped at Cuesta Real--well since I slept on the ground for several months in vietnam I promised myself that I would find the best accommodations I could afford when i sleep away from home. When we drove into Cuesta Real my wife and I both wondered what was going on . The place was not what we expected. When we looked at the room our view was of the backside of a hombre leaing over his hood working on some problem and the view was not that pleasing- think plumber's whose pants don't cover their backside. There were more broken down cars parked around and my immediate impression was "Deliverance".

We thanked the owners and drove on--I always like a door to my room that hasn't been kicked in by some previous tenant or visitor, and sadly Mulege lacks that in the three places I've stayed-- The Mulege Hotel, Las Casitas, and now the Cuesta Real.

Anybody have an opinion on the El Morro in Santa Rosalia?

Udo - 1-23-2012 at 04:37 PM

El Morro is still a superb place to stay. It is somewhat more deluxe than basic, but clean, and you can't beat the views.
Mulege, IMHO, is currently overrun by retirees, and is not a fun place to be around.
We did stay once at the hotel next to the air strip (forgot the name) in Mulege and we were happy with the place.

Phil S - 1-23-2012 at 04:50 PM

Well, here's the answer for those in the $50.00 range. "Clementine's" Judith & Cliff Taylor.Prop Wendy & I were given a personal tour for our trip down next year. Clean. spacious, and even adorable to some. I had looked at Cuesta Real, and was disappointed, so drove around the river homes, and accidentally found these near the river. One unit must have been a three bedroom. He must have three or four units. We will stay there next year for sure. You'll like cliff. Didn't get to meet Judith. www.clementines-bb.com

I like all these places you guys are b-tching about....whaddya expect???:rolleyes:

I also like the El Morro in Santa Rosalia....but can find things about it to complain about.

Sounds like some of you want a Best Western in a Bad Southern place.:lol:

I have paid over $200 /night for places that don't hold a candle to even the Hacienda... ambiance, history, and the fact you are out of Des Moines makes all these places superior in my opinion.

If you don't like it...stay home or whine about it to someone who might care.

Mulege's newest in-town

Mulegena - 1-23-2012 at 04:58 PM

Hotel Mayoral
a new place with parking, in town, off the main streets.
To find it, turn up the hill on either street before or after Mulege Motel. Go up two blocks. Don't attempt to take an RV up those roads; they're narrow and bumpy. Its a safe place, but as in any neighborhood, remove things from your car and lock the doors. You can walk anywhere in Mulege in under 5 minutes. I've seen the rooms. New, small but nice and with kitchen. Around $50/night with no minimum.

desertcpl - 1-23-2012 at 05:05 PM

no was has memtioned the Serenidad Hotel in Mulege

might be a little more expensive than the others, but I am sure you can bargain with them

great location, nice rooms, great resturant and bar, pool
secure and lots of parking
but I havnt stayed there for many years now

Udo - 1-23-2012 at 05:12 PM

You are right on with the Serenidad, desercpl!
That's where we stayed about three years ago. VERY nice place.

For those who don't know, a few years ago the Serenidad property was taken over by gunmen who felt they were the ORIGINAL owners of the property and that it was illegally taken from them.
After a few of years in the court system...all the way to Mexico city, the proper ownership was established and the property was rightfully owned by the current owners...an original Mexican person married to an American.

Bajahowodd - 1-23-2012 at 05:13 PM

I believe that there has been more than one reference to Serenidad in this thread. It is sadly not what it once was. I'm guessing that it is a combination of the drop off in tourist business and the advancing age of its patriarch.

Good to note a new possibility with Mayoral. I'll certainly check it out next week.

As for El Morro, same ownership as the dump in Guerrero Negro, but, although it really has little in the way of amenities, what is going for it includes the beautiful grounds, the superb location looking out on the SOC, and a restaurant.

If I had to stay in the Santa Rosalia area, it would be my first choice.

Sta. Rosalia

Mulegena - 1-23-2012 at 05:33 PM

slight hijack, but only 45 minutes north of Mulege

Las Casitas Motel is beautiful and overlooks the bay.

The historical old hotel in town is lovely and takes you back in time.

The Morro is ok. Rooms ok, the grounds lovely.

tripledigitken - 1-23-2012 at 06:12 PM

capitolkat,

I have a suggestion for you. It is a B an B right next to the Serenidad on the south river road. We have stayed in one of the casitas and enjoyed it very much. The owner prepares a great breakfast in their beautiful home. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for all the suggestions-- we will research them as it will be a while before we head north again. Don't get me wrong I like culture and am more adventurous than most but like a clean room and bath, secure door and parking as I don't want to unload all the stuff my wife and I travel with and coming back from the states we usually have a load of things for the house.

Motoged-- charming as usual.

bajalinda - 1-24-2012 at 11:19 AM

Ditto what Mulegena says about the Las Casitas in Sta. Rosalia. Beautiful views, very nice rooms, and the price is right. Just a heads-up though....we hear that many of the places in Sta. Rosalia are booked solid with people working for the mine project - a reservation may be a very good idea.

Got that, CapKat. Then, El Morro at the south end of Sta. Rosalia might be your choice equal to Motel Mulege (MM). It is a bit tired, the door isn't going to keep any bad guy out if they really want in, but there's pretty secure parking all considered (not gated, but walled). The advantage over MM is you needn't drive into town and the parking lot is bigger and there is a restaurant on-site. You can also ask for a room with a sweeping sea-view. Downside, it may be full: seemed to be the housing of choice for the white-collars, not blue-, of the mining operation when we went thru earlier this year.

I personally love the El Morro. The only thing it lacks is a thorough cleaning! Just check the room closely before you unload. Ask for another if it looks "neglected".
It looked about half full when I was there in November. Lots of trucks from the mine in the lot, and still lots of parking.

I think I remember the day you were here. Just in case you get homesick for Mulege

We also love the Hotel Morroin San ta Rosalia - and had the most disgusting meal of our 10 years in Baja last stay 18 months ago . . . eat elsewhere.

I would also note that restaurants and personnel change - so maybe some intrepid soul could report.

As of last week, same advice, better food available elsewhere.

So.... Any recommendations for decent eats in Santa Rosalia? I've read about El Muelle, never having been there. But in all of my stops there, I've been hard pressed to find a really good restaurant. Is El Muelle it?

This is a hijack

Mulegena - 1-25-2012 at 06:03 PM

which, if there were more dining options in Sta. Rosalia, would be worthy of its own thread, but since there's few sit-down inside eateries, let's just quickly note the other two restaurants in town:

~ the roast chicken place on the right opposite the plaza just as you come into town is good. Nice appetizers, chicken and desserts. They even have a sandwich on the menu. Ask 'em to cook the french fries just a little longer 'till they're golden (consistently pasty).

~ a new- and good- Chinese food restaurant has opened at the south end of town at the top of the malecon on the curve.

Howard,

The three "eaterias" we keep going back to are:

El Muelle, breakfast, lunch and dinner full bar. NW corner adjacent to the plaza where the municipal building is located.

Terco's Pollito, breakfast is the only meal I have had there, but many rave over the barbequed chicken they serve. They are located on the right as you just enter Santa Rosalia by turning right off Mex 1 heading south.

Pepe's Taco stand, excellent shrimp and fish tacos across street on left side from Terco's restaurant. Right next to the little park.

The restaurant at El Morro in Santa Rosalia is not owned by the hotel family anymore.

Seems like a falling out with the restaurant family has caused a lot of hard feelings with the hotel family.

I would consider staying out on the beach. Posada concepion has both casas and hostel type rooms. Nice folks live in the comunity there.
