INSURANCE HELP FOR A FRIEND

BAJA.DESERT.RAT - 12-29-2011 at 03:45 PM

Hola,

I have a question trying to solve a friends problem.

He is 85 years old and in exceptionally great health and Vagabundos will not insure him to drive his f250 pulling a 30 foot trailer to los barriles as their Mexican insurance company will not insure people over 80 years old.

Up until age 80, he has been driving south to los barriles for over 15 years.

Does anybody have any information getting insurance for a person 80 years old or older ?

I thank you in advance,

BIEN SALUD, DA RAT

I may be off base on this

but with the absent of insurance from a insurance carrier

he might be able to post a security bond of some kind

I'm quite certain that there are a number of attorneys lurking out there who would love to have an age discrimination case to prosecute.

No question that statistically, the older we get, the less in control of our functions. But that is a broad brush. There are probably many 85 year olds who have better cognitive skills than some 65 year-olds.

Just this month, I received my insurance renewal from GEICO. I've been with them for many years. My annual premium went up over $100. Curious, inasmuch as I've had no accidents or tickets, and my old machine is yet another year older.

I called them to inquire as to why there was an increase. Their answer was because I hit 65. Geez. I just drove by myself from OC to Cabo and back last month on Mexico friggin' Highway One!

I don't have an answer, but it sure feels uncomfortable being lumped in with a so-called class I don't consider to be mine.

Obviously, your insurance company heard about your trip and determined you were not of sound mind.

Slight hijack—but speaking of driving in your 80s—Many of you knew "Tio Don" O'Neil and his wife, Tia Anita, who lived on the malecon in Loreto for 30+ years. For Don's 80th birthday, he and Ann drove their Chevy camper from Loreto (crossing by ferry at La Paz) to the end of the road in Panama where it meets the Darien.

They took three weeks to drive down, camping the entire way. They stayed in Costa Rica at Encanta La Vida [www.encantalavida.com] where we met them for a week. (Even at the lodge, they chose to sleep in their cozy camper, which Don made sure was level with his pocket level.) After the drive through Panama, they returned to Loreto—taking another two weeks for the return to Loreto.

What a remarkable birthday trip—what a remarkable couple!

Don't check the "Are any driver's over 80?" box and hope for the best.

I recently bought my annual policy through Oscar Padilla ins, it was the cheapest I could find online. I don't remember any questions about age. Maybe check some online ins companys.

sounds like you should contact AARP insurance carrier. I doubt if they raise rate when you turn 65. Hartford Midwest is who mine is through with them

He is trying to buy Mexican Insurance. Try Lewis and Lewis and see if they have an age policy.
