Rubbing it in?????

Debra - 9-24-2004 at 07:20 PM

Mike H. and Mary Ann called me about 1pm today just before crossing the border. They reported that they have bought a trailer to bring P.O.T. II back from San Ignacio (I commented that it was a really good investment for Mike )

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in a little fun?.....(maybe a few "adult beverages" as well) If someone could help me with the "Poll" thingy on this board (David?)

The Poll could go something like this:

Will Mike H. make it all the way to San Ignacio with trailer?

Will Mike H. Make it back with said trailer?

Where will "Vaca Blanca" break down?

Or (this is a sucker bet!) Mike H. will make it to San Ignacio, and back home with "Vaca Blanca", "P.O.T. II" and trailer in tact. (yeah, right! )

Extra points will be given to the person that guesses the breakdown to the nearest kilometer (you don't even have to know which rig,:biggrin:

Now the prize will have to be collected next summer at Camp Gecko, but, we can use whichever rig that has broken downs' tailgate!!! HAHAHAHAHA!

Travelpearl, you're mean!!!!

Just click on 'new poll' instead of 'new topic' or 'post reply'.

If I must do your 'dirty work' then you must make more of your great clam chowder at Camp Gecko!!!

Here's the last two trips to Gecko:

maybe i should bring down some extra parts next week to fix what ever goes wrong this time:lol::lol::lol:. may have to take the old man fishing this trip and force a few beers down his throat on the way to the fishing holes.

Mean? Me mean to Mike?

Debra - 9-25-2004 at 11:29 AM

surely you jest.. :saint:

Steve, I think Mike is bringing the new engine for his boat also. Make sure he puts a safety chain it and bolts it on this time. (feel free to tell him I said that ) and yes, bring all the spare parts you can carry!

Have a great time!

R.D.Mercer - 9-25-2004 at 01:32 PM

Something about Mike H captaining a boat sounds very scarry.

My bet is wheel bearing around Guerrero Negro. Heading North. :O

If it's a used trailer

Tucker - 9-25-2004 at 01:44 PM

and the wheel bearings haven't been greased in a while, I will agree with Mercer.

David K - 9-25-2004 at 04:13 PM

Bearings will give out AFTER the Trooper (POT II) is loaded, and on a blind curve, like the one north of the El Tomatal road!!:wow::O:no:

Folks, Mike is a lovable fuzzball, and a space engineer (JPL).. But the guy has a problem with motorized vehicles (cars and boats). The Trooper never left San Ignacio because (as I heard) it had so little oil, the motor siezed. Last February, on Shell Island, the air filter in vaca blanca (the Suburban he bought as a spare car in San Ignacio), had more dust in it than Laguna Chapala!

Let us all pray... for Mike and Mary Ann (and POT II), to get to Gecko and back home safely!!!:yes::yes:;D

Don't forget the time when he lost the front bumper on some washboard road, apparently driving over it in the process, but didn't realize it until he got to his destination!

David K - 9-25-2004 at 08:00 PM

Yes, I was there and that was the original P.O.T. (Poor Old Truck) that featured drop off body parts ... dropping off to save weight as they were no longer needed.

A spare tire and jack were previous undesired items on POT. El Camote, on patrol near Papa Fernandez camp road, was a vital ingrediant in POT not needing a spare or jack.

As the intrepid Sr. Humfreville is a rocket scientist (of sorts), his ability to almost float over the rocky washboard north of Gonzaga was proven when not only did the drop off bumper 'self release', but POT obviously was in 'hover mode' as neither Mary Ann nor Mike felt the bumper as POT passed cleanly over that chrome and rust front ballast.

God speed Mike and Mary Ann, and long live POT II and Vaca Blanca, The Mother Ship! hip hip hooray!:lol::lol:

Mercer....

Debra - 9-26-2004 at 01:08 PM

you are soooo right, and too think I let my 8yr. old (now 11) son go out on a boat with him!!!!!! (I did make sure Brendan knew how to turn off the boat, just in case Mike fell overboard!,......of course this was before I knew the motor on the boat wasn't attached and would later fall off!

So? who will tell the story (like there was just one) about the "boat is gone, there goes the boat"......?:biggrin::biggrin:

Yes he did lose the front bumper and run over it , don't know if you have El Camote's video but it clearly shows it..toooooo funny!...this was before 9/11 and they went home with no plates......but! what is really scary is that we came across the border in "Vaca Blanca" with no plates, no papers NOTHING! I really didn't think about it until were were across, then it dawned on me...and I commented to Mike "did we just smuggle?" (we, well Mike and MA had just bought a "new" rig in San Ignacio for $14,000 plus) .....and you are allowed how many liters of booze", LOL!......the border Agent didn't even blink at the lack of papers or plates on the rig, he asked for papers (looking at my "toe head blond" kid for the most part (yes, I'm bringing back Mexican blond kids to use as organ donors!) SHEESE!

R.D.Mercer - 9-26-2004 at 05:17 PM

I guess it would be too much to expect that Mike would have flares on board.:fire: They can really come in handy should the unexpected happen on that road with no place to get off, as is often the case when towing. Any word it he made it back up to Gecko yet? R.D.:saint:

He would have plenty of room as he usually does not have a spare or a jack.

Yep...da man's done gone native.....

He hit the border the 24th. He may not be past San Quintin as yet!:saint:

Extra points will be given to the person that guesses the breakdown to the nearest kilometer (you don't even have to know which rig,

And I was going to ask if it was possible to guess if the breakdown at mile 0 was legit....

..a little side bet

El Camote - 9-27-2004 at 09:34 AM

I think the real money is on how many kilometers can he drag the trailer with seized wheel bearings, a flat tire and a disfiguringly bent wobbly rim.... and that's just the left wheel! :o:o

Camote

Debra - 9-29-2004 at 08:08 PM

You reminded me about the part of the trip Mike, MA, Brendan and I took to the tip and back when P.O.T II gave up the ghost, and the trailer (complete with the boat on it) kept falling off in downtown Todos Santos, the ball didn't fit POT! thank God the chain held it! :o :o :o I almost forgot that part, there have been so many close calls!!!!!! :o :O

GeoRock - 10-2-2004 at 09:42 AM

As a passenger riding with Mike and Ma on one of their many adventures, I feel I am entitled to write with authority when I state that he will likely make it south and have trouble way south of the border. Mike has this ability to power as far south as possible, regardless of the vehicle's condition.
But when it comes to heading north, all hell breaks lose as his body and mind don't want to cooperate. That's when his vehicles break down.

On my trip with him, he managed to get not one, not two, but three flat tires and all in the course of five minutes flat. That has got to be a record!

I had a blast with them and saw parts of Baja that opened my eyes and my heart to the land. I hope they are having a great time!

Smart Man !!!!

Not to worry...

Mike Humfreville - 10-2-2004 at 02:32 PM

Mary Ann and I made it past Cielito Lindo (they now have TWO happy hours!!!) and to Bahia de Los Angeles on schedule. We relaxed a day or two, drove down to San Ignacio, picked up POT II (that's pronounced "potty"???) and got back to Gecko day before yesterday. All's well and several friends from Nomad and others are here and the weather's fine. There are whale sharks at the south end with Doc taking tours out daily.

Regards and thanks for remembering us...Just think of it like this: We're here and YOU'RE NOT!!!

The motor works great, we're zeroing in on a house and all is wonderful. Best news is that after preparing for our trip the values on boxed wines have stabalized! Regards from Gecko.

Mike and Mary Ann

Santiago - 10-2-2004 at 03:08 PM

Now how are the Baja mechanics gonna pay for Christmas?

Not to worry Santiago....

Debra - 10-2-2004 at 04:40 PM

The mechnics still have plenty of time to make some money, Mike and MA aren't due to come home until the 9th.

Meds

Mike Humfreville - 10-4-2004 at 04:29 PM

Well, we've been here a week now and are having great fun all equipment is working well and there are plenty of great folks in the village, at La Gringa and Gecko. We have only had one problem and that was purely my own fault. Somehow I got my meds mixed up and took Ex-Lax in place of Zantac just before we took some new friends for a 4-hour boat ride. It was a great time for a while but in the "end" it was a disaster and, well, lets just say they are no longer our friends...

The earthquake here apparently had no impact on anyone here but many are aware of it. I've been joking that the Sea of Cortez is a "little longer" because of terremundo.

Steve 4-Baja, David A & Co. just arrived and are catching major yellowtail at Barnabee reef. Warm days, cool evenings, great folks in camp.

Already counting days 'til we head north. Y'all take care. I'll get even when we get home!

GeoRock - 10-5-2004 at 08:19 AM

A post like that is going to open you up to a flood of teasing.........a blow-out of all proportions..........a "run" on jokes...........a "blast" of funny postings........"X-Laughs" (x-lax).

Debra - 10-5-2004 at 12:56 PM

Mike....you are truely a piece of work :o

and please....Tell MA I don't believe one little bit of what she said in her email to me this morning!! JAJAJAJA!.....(like I'm really supposed to believe that you made it back "home" with not one breakdown?) give me a break! there is no tatoo (stupid) on my forhead. Love you guys, come home safe!

We're Back.

Mike Humfreville - 10-11-2004 at 08:09 PM

All went well and despite all the flak from our pals, the new trailer, Vaca Blanca AND POT II are now safely in our driveway. Not to imply that towing that wide trailer all the way from San Ignacio with 7000 lbs. atop it was a piece of cake. Stories to follow...

David K - 10-11-2004 at 08:17 PM

Oh goodie!!!:tumble::tumble::tumble:
