The owner of the "rescued Golden Retriever" (found in La Paz) has not been found so Patty and I are going to adopt her. She has not been named. Most of her time will be spent at the beach at Playa El Burro Mexico so we want to give her a Mexican name. Any suggestions? Thanks Ron and Patty

Good for you guys for adopting this dog! I was thinking "suerte."
Enjoy your new companion. We loved our golden retriever and she absolutely loved the beach. Congratulations! Jim

For a good 1-2 sylable dog name..easy to hear for a long distance...

I always wanted to stand out by the street and yell..."Taxi! Taxi!"..

but then, I usually get Cabs or ?...and so it goes.

p.s. The dog will name itself as it comes to love and own you.

you all know that dogs respond to names best when the last syllable is a vowel, right?

my personal favorite - Esco. short for Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca and it rhymes with Let's Go!

Thanks for some excellent suggestions and the comments. We're going to wait to make a final decision until we pick her up but these suggestions are extremely helpful!! Thanks a million. Ron and Patty

There was a comedian who said he named his dog "Stay." That way he could say "Here Stay and come, Stay" and drive the dog nuts.

"Worm" for worming her way into your heart.

Many dog behaviorists say that a dog brain responds better and more immediately to a call name with hard consonants.

One of our female Great Danes is named Tica and her sister is named Kapu.

Recently, our gate was accidentally left open and we had two young Great Danes racing for the highway.

When I yelled "Kapu", there was no response. When I yelled "Tica, both of them immediately turned around and came back.

Cue to dog mama locking up the puppies and then collapsing on the couch.

If you will be taking lotsof photos of the pooch, how about this one?

Right you are, Gypsy. Been that way forever. My dog training mentor said a strong sounding name of only 1 or 2 sylables max was ideal for all dogs...and mandatory for hunting breeds. John Wolter and his books about a revolutionary & rapid dog trianing are still part of any dog trainers library.

Keep the name short and strong.

Consider this name..Kodak. As in Kodak-Eastman Film Co.

Kodak — Both the Kodak camera and the name were the invention of founder George Eastman. The letter "K" was a favourite with Eastman; he felt it a strong and incisive letter. He tried out various combinations of words starting and ending with "K".

He saw three advantages in the name.

It had the merits of a trademark word,

- would not be mis-pronounced

-and the name did not resemble anything in the art.

Asked about the name "Kodak", George Eastman replied,

"Philologically, the word Kodak is as meaningless as a child’s first ’goo’—terse, abrupt to the point of rudeness, literally bitten off by firm and unyielding consonants at both ends, it snaps like a camera shutter in your face. What more would one ask!"

David Houston, inventor of many patents bought by George Eastman, lived in North Dakota and may have suggested the word "Nodak" to Eastman.

The camera proved such an enormous success that the word Kodak was incorporated into the original company name...Eastman Co.

Thought you might like this little tidbit on "How to choose a name."

Capkcon - 1-8-2012 at 08:47 AM

Names with three syllables usually get the first syllable dropped.
So if you name her Bonita, she will end up being "Nita". A nice name.
Names with two syllables and ending in a vowel are easier to say and easier for the dog to understand.

Just ask our four dogs: Mika, Suki, Coco.
Loreto ended up being Reto.

The letter "K" was a favorite of Eastman's; he is quoted as saying, "it seems a strong, incisive sort of letter." He and his mother devised the name Kodak with an anagram set. Eastman said that there were three principal concepts he used in creating the name: it should be short; one cannot mispronounce it, and it could not resemble anything or be associated with anything but Kodak.

It has also been suggested that "Kodak" originated from the suggestion of David Houston, a fellow photographic inventor who held the patents to several roll film camera concepts that he later sold to Eastman. Houston, who started receiving patents in 1881, was said to have chosen "Nodak" as a nickname of his home state, North Dakota (NoDak). This is contested by other historians, however, who cite that Kodak was trademarked prior to Eastman buying Houston's patents.

I have two red Golden Retrievers and have followed this thread (and the other) with great interest. Our two dogs are females and go by the names of Cabo and Tecate. So whatever name you come up with it will be perfect.

Just remember with red Golden Retriever's the game of fetch never ends, there is no water hole too digusting that a quick swim is bad and you will never - ever have to empty out a dog bowl because there was extra food left in it!

Best of luck with your new family companion and good luck with trying to remember who the boss is!!!

Come visit us up in Mulege.

DENNIS - 1-8-2012 at 02:17 PM

My buddy's dog was named Bill. It was so simple and uncomplicated. Nobody ever had to wonder silently, "I wonder why his name is Bill?" So many other names would elicit that question, but not Bill.

J.P. - 1-8-2012 at 03:05 PM

When we were kids growing up in west Texas a stray showed up and with the threat of death we fed him anyway to make a long story short we named him BOY, very original for 4 young kids dont you think:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

No matter what you name it, train it to come to a whistle. You can only scream so loud, a whistle will carry over the wind and surf. I've called my setters at 300 yards in a midwest windstorm with a whistle.

Spearo, using a whistle is fine if the dog can hear you, and except when you're hunting with more than one dog, which we often do..sometimes quite a pack. My lab obeys hand signals out to 500 yards. Tha greatly increases your level and range of control.

My black lab, Gypsy, was so easy to train to hand signals, I almost began to believe she was a mind-reader. Stop, sit, right, left, come, go, circle, levitate...etc. ;)

Excellent way to find downed birds that the dog did not spot at the shot. Pheasants, sharptail, huns, quail, doves, ducks in a slough with tall weeds....all seem to fall in that hidden spot out there.

But..we are headed off base a bit...back to the dog 'naming' process!

How about "Rambo?" I like it, except for the weak 2nd syllable.. '-bo'

Everybody in all nations will know the name...and give it some respect!

Hey Pompano

Again off topic, but we need to meet up and talk about la Bahia and hunting in the Dakotas sometime. We seem run in the same neighborhoods.

"What's his name?"

The owner looked at me with a straight face and said ,"Askim!"

I asked a few more times until I realized I had the answer....and I had a good laugh with the owner

I also really like the name "Colita" for a female pet...;D

To Dana- "meant to be-" probably!! To BajaOkie- you perfectly described our 10 yr old Golden that passed away in June 2011 with cancer. He always had a ball available and even after hours of play he would use his nose to push that ball to my feet begging for one more throw. That dog swam in everything from the ocean in Alaska to the raging Colorado River to the mudhole that formed from the melting snow in back of our son's home. He would mind perfectly until he smelled water. Once he smelled water, a made to order steak couldn't get him to listen!! We will be back to El Burro the end of January- stop by to see us and bring your Goldens!! To Pompano- thanks for the input but if the new Golden is anything like our old Golden "Rambo" doesn't fit. Maybe "lover" but definitely not "Rambo!!" To CaptKW- hola and good day to you also. We're picking her up on Jan 23rd and have decided not to name her until we have her in our hot little hands. Lots of great suggestions that are much appreciated!!

Yes, you're right, absinvestor..'Rambo' was meant to be a tongue-cheek name for a gentle breed like Goldens. You can imagine being knocked down and licked to death by a Golden Rambo...

I want you to meet Randy, my compadre & lifelong friend (by lifelong I mean since we are babes in the same double stroller...our mothers were best friends, too.) Randy was raised with 5 goldens and he & wife, Ginny, have loved exactly 5 goldens at all times since he could afford thier high expense...almost 40 years now.

Here is his current 5-member tribe. His last replacement golden pup.. a female...he named 'Willow'

Another female is named 'Olive'..

.....nice, gentle names for a nice, gentle breed?

To Pompano- thanks for the great pics. I have owned a lot of different breeds- muts, pugs, chows, shepherds, huskies, spaniels etc but have never owned one any better for an overall companion than a golden. To CapKw- owner hasn't been found. We have agreed to adopt her and are in route to La Paz to pick her up later this month. The thread is under "looking for owners of rescued golden retriever in La Paz."

Don't call that dog lifesaver!

Islandbuilder - 1-12-2012 at 10:00 PM

Due to a Golden's sweet and loving nature, and their tendency to roll around in the most disgusting available water before greeting strangers wearing white pants, I suggest "no mi perra", or, as a logical second choice "dammit" as in "COME DAMMIT!"

KaceyJ - 1-12-2012 at 10:12 PM

Wow !

still up for a dog name ,

chosing a name is an important task, not only does it define who the dog is, but what it is.

I'll suggest something phonetically simple , she looks sweet and strong.
