Whale watching cancelled in Magdalena Bay

Puerto San Carlos, B.C.S.- Informes de último minuto que están llegando a nuestra redacción, dan cuenta de la inconformidad de prestadores de servicios turísticos en éste puerto y en Adolfo López Mateos que definitivamente están tronando contra el delegado de la Secretaría del Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT) Marco Antonio González Vizcarra.

Y es que la dependencia no liberó los permisos a los lancheros para el avistamiento de la ballena gris en la zona, por lo que la actividad está totalmente suspendida y los turistas decepcionados, están regresando a sus lugares de origen.

Al momento no existe una explicación creíble de la dependencia federal que no ha liberado las autorizaciones. Sin embargo esta situación pone en jaque a los aproximadamente 200 lancheros de ambas localidades, que han fincado sus esperanzas en recabar un dinero extra con el traslado de turistas, ya que la actividad pesquera se encuentra disminuida por culpa de la misma SEMARNAT que ha descuidado el lugar y permitido la operación de depredadores de especies en veda.

And that is because they have not yet granted permission to the boaters in the area for gray whale watching operations and the activities are totally suspended. Disappointed tourists are returning back to from whence they came.

At the moment there is no credible explanation from the federal agency which has not released the authorizations. This situation puts a halt to the approximately 200 boatmen in both locations who have placed their hopes on making some extra money by carrying tourists, now that fishing activities are declining due to the very same SEMARNAT that has failed to care for the area and has permitted poachers to take protected species.

Quiet as all get out down at the dock.
Only a couple restaurants open.

The locals are hoping the permits will be issued Monday, Wednesday or Thursday, so they can get on with their lives.

All but a couple small groups of whale watchers did pull out of Lopez yesterday.

and what is the current count on whales this season ????and tourist ???

on anything in Lopez until after the season, which I guess, from locals - doesn't officially start until Jan. 15.

The problem started when a few tourists showed up early to whale watch and the co-op pangas jumped the gun = the locals trying to be accommodating - without their permits in place, yet.

Cost for a panga for 1 hour is 800 pesos again this year - with 6 people (not per person).

Ain't that the truth. With more care and attention and of course money...Magdalena Bay could be one of Mexico's top sport fishing destinations. ( I mean inside the Bay, not the offshore migratory fish )

Yes, for sure...just like what did not happen in Conception Bay. I wouldn't bet the ranch that it will be any different in Mag Bay.
