Yes, you are covered except for glass damage-I think!

WHY would this be a concern ?

MrBillM - 1-11-2012 at 10:32 AM

Doesn't EVERYBODY have Liability Insurance, anyway ?

If not, WHY not ?

Toll Road Insurance Coverage:
The insurance covers two different situations. One, if you are at fault it will cover the following:

•Damage to the road
•Damage to other vehicles including medical payments for occupants and pedestrians
•Medical payments and funeral expenses for occupants of your vehicle
•There is no deductible if you are driving a car, but there are deductibles if you are driving a bus or a small bus or larger vehicle

The insurance will not cover damage to your vehicle if you are at fault

Secondly, if you are not at fault, it will pay for :

•Damage to your vehicle including towing expenses
•Medical payments for occupants of your vehicle including land ambulance to the nearest medical center

The above will be covered as a consequence of landslides, objects within the asphalt, holes, and substances that have been spilled on the road.
•If tires have been damaged, lights broken, or glass breakage has occured to the vehicle, the insurance will only cover the damage if it is due to loose pavement on the road due to maintenence of the road.

You may learn more and read the conditions of the insurance in Spanish by visiting the Seguro del Usuario page on Caminos y Puentes website.

I had been told years ago it was as you say Bob. I had a friend fall a sleep and roll down from the north bound lane to the south bound lane coming back from Ensenada and as you say his medical bills etc were paid.

I was once told, by a Toll Lady(collecting the $), that 'the receipt' you receive when you pay the toll IS your proof of said Insurance... And without each receipt, for each segment of road, you are not covered. (ie- you need a receipt for the 2nd section, if you have an accident on the 2nd... etc)
But this was a good 10 YEARS ago.
Anyway, truth or fiction, I save those receipts until completely passed, just in case.

I don't understand how this would benefit the average
Gringo Tourist, EXCEPT if the Gringo carried only
liability on his vehicle, in that case the Toll Rd liability
would come into play if he was hit by another vehicle
on the Toll Rd. Correct?

That has always been my understanding as well.
More important to me is the tow service to the nearest Toll Gate. Who wants to be stranded on the Toll Road. It's not just for accident victims. They'll tow you off if your car breaks down and probably tow you all the way to Cabo for the right price.

Following up on what MrBill mentioned, my experience with using short term Mexican policies, is that they all provide for towing. So, methinks that if something bad were to occur, it would be a matter of whether your Mexican insurance would be able to subrogate against the toll road policy.
