New road sections

mooose29 - 1-11-2012 at 12:04 AM

Has anyone else noticed that on many of the new sections of road, (built/re-paved) in the last few years that some huge potholes are forming already. In many ways it is worse then before as now you are tooling along and all of a sudden bam a pothole. Before when the road was just bad you expected it and looked out for it. The new road can lull you into laziness so be careful.

Most long-time Baja travelers have noticed that particular defect of Mexican road construction since ....oh, about 1973.

No, he is talking about the road to Punta Chivato and for sure that one has some serious potholes as well as a few other defects.

The new roads down south have not shown deterioration! The old days yes but they are really making highways now. Adonde? Can you name a couple places of which you speak? Gracias. Tio

Jim I went out 2 or was it 3 weeks ago and it was in better shape than I can remember. The Palo Verde to just beyond Chivato turn off is something else. (but doable on a quad:spingrin:)

Check back with me after the next decent rainy season. The highways I see being constructed may be wider in some sections, but the quality is the same-old, same-old, ya veras.

They automatically install them as soon as road is finished:

Some sections of the road to Abreojos that are only 3-4 years old look like a war zone. I watched them pave it.

How far down South??? We went through the "new" pavement South of Catavina a couple of month ago, and were really surprised at the almost instantaneous deterioration of the new pavement.

Low bid contracts, I assume.

The road to Punta Chivato was paved? When?

mooose29 - 1-11-2012 at 11:35 PM

While the road to Punta Chivato is never very good unless you catch it right after the grader has been through I like it the way it is. I am indeed talking about the various new sections south of El Rosario, Catavina, etc... The road has sections of nice wide roads with new asphalt but the potholes are growing and some are getting quite big. We just did the drive the week after Christmas down to Ounta Chivato and back and I was surprised by the number and size of potholes on the new sections. This is not a complaint more a observation. I have been traveling the roads since I was a kid and I am very used to Baja roads.

Speaking of potholes, although there has been a huge amount of work on the road from Ensenada to Tecate, has anyone noticed the pothole problem there?

In my opinion, there are a few stretches of that road that are just awful because of potholes.

Just was on that road and don't recall any areas of "new" road that were bad. South of Catavina is a different story.
