Two trips ago my truck stalled (2005 F-250, auto transmission) going down the steepest, twistiest part of that grade, it was the weirdest thing. Lost my power steering. I was amazed at how fast I shifted to neutral while still rolling, re-started the motor and avoided a disaster. It was all reflex, instinctive. Frightening.

Been up and down that grade so many times now it doesn't seem like a big deal like it used to be. Also, I haven't noticed any turned over trucks in the past couple of years either. My wife even breathes now when we go over it. The improvements they made may have helped.

the grade is WAY worse in tj by the border on the way south

you can smoke your trailer brakes on the santa rosalia grade

as for a truck stalling...well...
dont drive a truck that isnt running properly in baja...
especially 15 hours south of the border

In the pic if you closely at the bottom and left this is AFTER the road was fixed:lol: cement was added to fell in and smooth out the holes!!

First time, many years ago, blew my mind. But the fact is that anyone driving carefully will pass through with no problem.

I hate that grade! A few years ago coming north we saw a big truck like the one in Tehags photo with the oval tank that had very recently plunged off and down a ways. Above the was a young couple and their son. The man was holding the woman in his arms and she was sobbing. We figured it had been her father or someone close who had died. It was very sad and sobering to see. Also,we are always so careful driving in Baja but I always worry about the other drivers, there's some crazy ones out there.

Bubba (names changed to protect the not-so-innocent) takes his Bronco out into the mudflats at San Lucas Cove and gets stuck. :no:

Tide comes in but not to far, and vehicle gets pulled out.

All fluids are drained and refilled an it starts just fine!!!

One small problem, automatic transmission slips under load in forward gears, but not in reverse.

So he drives it home but has to back up every hill on Mex 1 the whole way home.

It would be a better story if he also had a trailer :yes:

The most exciting trip down El Diablo for me 'must have been' when I was towing a 32' X 11' flybridge boat.....

...at least I think it was. I have no clear recollection of the event.

That is the worst of the turns. I saw a load of rebar go over a few years back. Some of it is still on the side of the hill.
