Mexicali Road Construction

CortezBlue - 1-11-2012 at 08:57 AM

I normally travel to San Felipe from AZ and cross at San Luis and miss Mexicali. I am coming from Oceanside, CA on Saturday and will be taking the old crossing and remember someone talking about construction in Mexicali. Is this still the case?

Let me know and I will go to the new crossing and take the airport road.

Went through there last week, all is fine. There are two blocks that you detour over to the opposite lane while they repave the southbound lane, no big deal.

No dirt detours all the way to San Felipe.

It seemed like a big deal for us as it made us get lost. On the way down( 29th of Dec) there was a small dirt detour and on the way back (Jan 6th) there was no detour. Have fun. Nancy

We just got back from San Felipe. We didn't find the detours to be a big issue. As David K. said, there are two places where you are detoured over to the opposite lane. Just watch for people trying to jump ahead and merge in front of you from the right and you'll be OK. Other than that they were quick and easy. Already wishing I was back in Baja :-)

Wow
What a mess!

If you are coming in from CA and are going to San Felipe, cross at the East border.

The road to SF from the west crossing, is a mess. It took much longer to fight the lights and road "cross overs" we're awful.

Drive the extra 6 miles and cross on the east

Got across the border (south to north) yesterday about 8:15 a.m. in 12 mins flat & not in Sentri or READY Lane even! Timing was GREAT!

DK are the detours on Lopez Mateos?

At the old Mexicali entrenance I normally I take the first right turn just after the immigration offices, I think it's called Zorilla. A short block and a right on Reforma and a short distance and a left on Costa Del Rio. It's like a large arroyo multi lanes. The name changes a couple of times with a sweeping left turn and ends at Union. Take a left and soon meets hwy 5. Right to San Felipe. Look at Google maps for a better understanding.

The main street to San Felipe (with railroad tracks in the middle) from downtown border... yes. Honestly, on New Years weekend there were just two seperate blocks where southbound traffic was detoured over to the northbound side for re-paving southbound lanes. Compared to any other detour in Mexico, it was a breeze. However, maybe Cortez hit it at the height of traffic?
