...anyone have any 'chop-shop' connections in TJ???

micah202 - 1-16-2012 at 05:02 AM

...stopped to visit a friend in Tijuana,,,,
....should have listened to that 'little voice' and slept in the van instead of accepting his kind offer of a guestroom----the van is STOLEN!!!

......the 'hope' is ironically that the security guard is able to get word onto the street fast that there's a reward for return.

...maybe someone sees the van
....VERY distinctive dark brown,,lighter doors,,,,1986 Toyota van,4x4,,,,,,,white kayak on top

aaaah Mannnn,,,,I don't 'recommend' anyone gets their vehicle swiped in TJ:barf::barf::barf:
,,,,,,,,I've got 2 local friends driving and translating,so it's as 'good as it gets',,
,,,but still the process to fully register a police report for this is ~4-5 copshop visits ,,AND 3 days!!!!!....DO keep at least details of car serial #,,and basic insurance inf with you,,not in the car,,,,,,,,DON'T EVER stop in TJ:barf::barf::barf:

.....Have t'wait 4 days for emergency passport to be issued,,,well enough time to lose hope in finding th'baby..........been spending m'time passing out 'rewardo' fliers to cabbies,,funny-a lot of them don't seem too interested t'get a flyer from some gringo, till I hold it up and they see 'recompensa $1000u.s.',,then their eyes bulge:o,,,they take the flyer,,,read -very- carefully,,,then carefully fold it and put usually in shirt pocket.....I figure if each poster generates ~3-4 sets of 'eyes' keen to find this,,,and cabbies know the 'underbelly' of any city well,,,,,at least there's some hope .....................definitely a surreal experience overall

..........apparently there's been DOZENS of carthefts in Playas Tijuana alone over the past couple of weeks,,,,daytime at the shopping centre is -regular-:barf::barf::barf:

...definitely, do NOT even THINK about naming your Baja-van 'Chxcacxbra'..(don't even -think- the word now),,,,the damn things will claim whatEVER's associated to them in ANY way!!!!!!

I'm really sorry to hear of your loss, that's gotta put a cramp in vacation plans. The worse part is dealing with local officials, who often seem they couldn't care less about recovering the stolen property. Am currently going through that myself, but at least my missing property isn't much.

micah202 - 1-17-2012 at 11:33 PM

....at least I got my baja adventure in!!!,,though a short trip this time,,it was a great and mystic baja adventure as usual!!

chop shop in TJ

C-Urchin - 1-18-2012 at 12:16 AM

Heuh! Any insurance on this vehicle???

Mengano - 1-18-2012 at 12:23 AM

On those older cars, like yours, which have a distributor, you need to use a Mexican anti-theft device. Pull the high voltage wire that runs from the distributor to the spark coil and take it to bed with you. You still would have lost your passports and valuables, but at least your car would still be there in the morning.

The newest cars don't have that set up. In that case, open the fuse box (usually under the hood) and remove the relay labeled "starter" and take it with you. Given enough time, the thieves will figure out why the car won't start and fix it. But they usually don't have the time to do that.

Forget about a car alarm. Everybody ignores them. The schematic that shows where the relay is is usually on the inside of the fuse box lid. This is what a typical one looks like:

micah202 - 1-18-2012 at 12:45 AM

...my car had a hidden kill switch as well as 'club' in place.,not to mention the -visual deterrant- of mismatched doors
.....that's the extent of insurance available for that age of vehicle in mex:no::no::no:

DavidE - 1-18-2012 at 08:21 AM

micah202,
Go to where you fill out the stolen vehicle report and offer anyone there five thousand pesos (if you have that much) reward for the return of your van. This is usually done at the ministerio publico and you can flash the bankroll to a detective as proof. Good luck I feel for you.

....by now,,every detective,,taxi-driver,,school kid,,autobody,,propane delivery person in TJ is keenly looking for the 'recompensa $1000.00us' truck,,,
,,because of the nature of the truck, being older,4x4,,easy parts replacement, mechanically 100%,,,,,it's very likely it'll go south into baja---I'm hoping that the nomads will remember to watch for this....other than the 4x4 hubs on the front wheels,,,and the extra size all terrain tires,,,it's a cargo van,,with a full wall down the driver's side,,,,-except- that the side and back doors have been replaced with window doors----1/5000 to see that combination, regardless of any paintjob it might get.
.....this van WILL show up,,,it's just a question of 'if' there'll be eyes to SEE it!!!!!

One quick cut of the soft steel in the steering wheel and the CLUB will be on the floor. Highly overrated as a theft deterrent, but I'll bet you know that by now.
Sorry for your loss. :(

....from the word on the street around here,,the only real security feature for the # of thefts in TJ,,is ''don't even think about stopping in TJ'',,,from the sounds of it,,day or night,,there's GREAT risk otherwise.

...just remember the description,,this WILL show up somewhere in baja,,and it WILL drive past or park in front of a nomad!!!

"The Club" may stop or deter amateurs or joy-riders, but is useless against pros, as most everything else is. I must admit I use The Club on all my vehicles, and none of them has ever been stolen--------------PROOF that they work, eh????:lol::lol::lol::lol:

They are cheap at garage sales.

A word of caution and an ide.....

djh - 1-18-2012 at 06:26 PM

I too am sorry for the loss of your trusty pony and cabin..... I've been right there and felt your angst.

Just a cautionary word for you..... be careful flashing cash or making your head the target for someone's club or bullett. It may be the GOOD part of the story that you were NOT sleeping in the van.... it really could have been worse.

No rig is worth risking your life for.... Especially an old "cube van" which is what these used to be called by most...... I owned 2 wayback, a 2WD delux and a 4WD that was all trick & a really great rig.

I met an "older woman" solo camped near Todos Santos, winter of 1988/9 who had a new (then) 4WD Cube Van that was a camper with a pop-top.... when I got back N., I sold my VW van!!! Hmmmm that "older woman" was younger than I am now.... WTH happened...?

One other detail / suggestion for fellow Nomads: I have copies of my Passport, US Drivers' License, FM3, (and some other important cards & info)that I scanned and emailed to myself (and saved in my email account files) in the event my papers are ever stolen or lost. My assumption is that it would help facilitate / simplify / save time and stress with replacements, and getting where I needed to go.... Fortunately, I have not had to test that hypothesis . . . . yet & hopefully never.

Good Luck 2 U
djh

micah202 - 1-18-2012 at 08:13 PM

yes,Dj,,,,,have only gone around -playas- TJ with the posters,,
,,,and -do- consider the possibilities beyond.

....good suggestion for back up documents.

woody with a view - 1-18-2012 at 08:21 PM

he brings up a good point. be careful if someone comes up claiming they know where it is. could be a setup!!!!

Here's a good forum for posting on...

Ken Cooke - 1-18-2012 at 08:52 PM

Nomad 'TW' totalled his Toyota in Mexicali, and I parked my Rubicon in front of the OXXO to talk with Police on his behalf.

As my Jeep sat, filled with camping gear - a lowrider pulled into the parking lot, and two men inside scanned the parking lot for the owner of MY Jeep.

They looked across the street and saw me STARING BACK AT THEM as I spoke to the POLICE.

Hmmm, "Not a good idea" they must have thought as they quickly drove off.:!:

Well, you found out how effective the kill switch was. The object of the exercise is to DISABLE the car by removing a component needed for the engine to run.
