Shark advisory posted after great white sighting in Imperial Beach

IMPERIAL BEACH — Authorities have posted an advisory Wednesday after a shark believed to be a great white was spotted close to the shore in Imperial Beach.

A surfer standing at the end of Beach Avenue south of the Imperial Beach Pier spotted the shark’s fin above the water about 9 a.m. Tuesday and took a picture of it, Imperial Beach lifeguard Capt. Robert Stabenow said.

The animal was swimming about 100 to 150 yards offshore in water some 10 to 15 feet deep, Stabenow said.

The photo was sent to shark experts who determined the fin belonged to a great white approximately 16 to 18 feet long, Stabenow said.

The shark has not been sighted since.

Stabenow said that while sharks are ever present it is unusual for a great white of that size to swim so close to shore so they decided to warn swimmers and surfers of the sighting.

“We want the public to make an educated decision,” Stabenow.

I always see dolphins at that beach...glad they got some, "shark experts".

If the surf is up around IB, and the contaminated signs are up, the surfers ignore the signs. I wonder if the surf is up if a big old shark will stop them! :biggrin:

it's prolly the abundance of Mexican Brown Trout which are spawning this time of year in the TJ river that draw the big sharks close.

Expedition White Shark is a new phone app that tracks custom satellite tagged sharks in real time. I saw it on the news yesterday and it looks kinda cool. Looks like a few off Baja near your favorite spots! Careful down there Woody, lol.

Woody, I know all too well the tingly feeling on the back of the neck. Since I'm skiing again, I get it at high speed when I remember that there are Snow Snakes everywhere ready to eat me. :lol:

There used to be signs on the highway warning to "Watch For Snow Slippery", I hear they can be deadly, but I've never seen one.

Tiburones are real. Sharp eye brother.

Several years ago I went surfing in Sayulita the day after a big winter rain flushed the valley just north of the break. I must have swallowed a bit of that trout infested water, because the next couple of days were very interesting in a lower GI sort of way. My ADD was held at bay during my regular (sorry) search for functional facilities.
