La Paz kindergarten evacuated under bomb threat

The Luís Peláez Manríquez kindergarten in La Paz was evacuated this Friday morning after receiving a bomb threat. A device with wires and a clock and pvc tubes wrapped in tape was found in the third step in the entrance to the school. The Carlos Moreno Preciado primary school next door was also evacuated.

The operation is currently being supervised by General Jorge Calvillo Ordoñez, commander of the Third Military Zone. A similar device was found at the Carlos Moreno Preciado school last March during a labor conflict with teachers.

A girl called the sheriff's department Friday morning after a man attempted to kidnap her, she said.

A former fencing coach at La Jolla Country Day School has pleaded not guilty for allegedly carrying on an inappropriate relationship with a student.

On Tuesday, 50-year-old Vijay Prasad was charged with 13 counts, including sodomy of a person under 16 by a person over 21, and lewd act on a child 14 or 15 years of age.

A Southwest Houston man shot himself after a standoff with police Friday, authorities said.

The man, a suspect in the stabbing of a 4-year-old girl, led police on a 30-minute chase before holding SWAT officers at bay at his home in the 7900 block of Airport near Brookvalley Friday morning, police said.

At about 12:15 p.m., SWAT officers breached the door and entered the home, said Houston Police Department spokeswoman Jodi Silva. When they went inside, they found the man dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The standoff began about 10 a.m., when the man barricaded himself inside his home. The man and the girl's mother apparently got into an argument at a home at 6345 Cattails sometime after 9 a.m., Silva said. The girl was with them during the altercation and was cut on the throat. Police did not say how the man was related to the girl or what sparked the argument with her mother.

The child was taken to Texas Children's Hospital with serious injuries to her throat, Silva said. She is expected to survive.

After the stabbing, the man drove toward his home at 7957 W. Airport. Police attempted to stop the car just before 10 a.m., Silva said, but the man refused to stop.

He pulled into his garage, got out of the car with a gun, and barricaded himself in the house, she said. A short time later, police heard a single gunshot. When they went into the home, officers found him dead on the floor in a back room.

Neighbors in the complex of townhomes reacted with dismay.

Quedia Daniels, whose home is near the dead man's, said she's lived in the area about a year, but the violence is reason enough to find a new place to live.

"I'm terrified," she said. "I'm ready to move now."

Anthony Batiste, a maintenance man at the property, said the man and his girlfriend moved in two days ago and had an argument yesterday. When he heard about the day's tragedy, Batiste expressed regret.

"What happened right here, it shouldn't have happened," he said.

Neighbor Renee Hall added that the incident didn't make sense to her. "It's sad," she said.

Mexico has declared war on the drug cartels....years ago. Of course the death rates are higher in Mexico......... due to the on going war. Fact is.....general violence rates are linked to this cartel war also.

Your chart is not only........... over sized (over 800 wide) for the BN forum.......your head is over sized too with these twisted numbers.

Very few foreigners get caught up in this war ........generally speaking. Fact is Mengano / Fulano..............it's the American market for drugs....that is really fueling the cartels. Punish the drug users severely in the USA...there be a drop in the cartel power base.

If I went back to some news sources and used the stats I mention they would be not verifiable. Like the stat that per capita Mexico City is a safer place than Washington, D.C. when it comes to murders per 100,000 people p/yr.

But stats like those aren't important. What's important is Manges predictability anytime ANY negative news event occurs and finds its way across his computer screen.

I came to this site in the Fall to get info on getting my tourist card in La Paz. I did it. It wasn't a big deal.
Since then I have come back to it a few times a week to see what "worthy" news I could gather on "BAJA".

What I have learned is that this idiot fear mongers constantly. As well, others drivel on about the inane stuff regularly.
I don't claim to be some Mexico or Baja expert. What I have little time for is arm chair haters who haven't a clue what the streets all about.
I am here and have been for a few months. It is not my first trip to Mexico for an extended period of time.

In Mange-guanos case I believe the best thing for him to do is to go on the streets of Tijuana/La Paz or mainland Mexico and knock on the doors of the Narco Lords, the Gangs and even the Military and ask them why it is "SOOOOO DANGEROUS" here.

To me that will prove his point that it is. Otherwise you are just telling us what we already know. It is easily found on the web and that is all you are doing. Regurgitating news from another source.

Actually, that couldn't be further from the truth but I didn't build my home in Cabo to turn a profit. I did it because was able to and because my family loves vacationing in Mexico. You assert that anyone here who chooses to focus on any positive aspects of Mexico does so out of greed. I don't have a problem with your posts. It's actually a good thing that you have the free time to do the research for us who are concerned about the the state of affairs in Mexico. I discovered this site out of a desire to become better informed and the debates that take place here have actually helped me rationalize what is reported in the media about the drug war that is happening Mexico. Are there places that are too dangerous to visit? Yes. Are there many places that are safe to visit? Yes. Could that change? Sure.



You're not a pr!ck because you post negative, all be it factual things about Mexico. What makes you a pr!ck is the derogatory and demeaning tone you have with those who don't agree with you. You're not pathetic for being willing to argue your opinion.
