Women who travel alone (not counting kids) have always impressed me. Perhaps it's because I grew up watching my mother manhandle that old '44 Dodge Power Wagon ex-military-ambulance-with-power-nothing we got around in down here. So when I was recently loading groceries at the local Chedraui's and saw this lady-and-car combo pull up, I just had to find out more.

The woman is from Acapulco, Guerrero and the car is a 1962 Datsun 1300. She and her daughter had driven from Acapulco and arrived in town a few days earlier. Her husband, who's in the Mexican Navy, is due to arrive in a couple of days on his ship. She and her daughter are following (or, in this case, leading) him in the car as part of a family vacation plan.

That a woman would travel alone with her young daughter is impressive enough, but when taking into consideration the age of the vehicle, it becomes all the more remarkable.

had a 57 VW which worked really well in Baja... years ago...

Is there anywhere a bug didn't work well (save, perhaps, for the heating in cooler climates)? They remind me of the stories I've heard about old Model T's.

Not to change the subject too much, but just four days ago there was a shoot-out at that exact same location where your photo was taken.

Cabo San Lucas, B.C.S.- Tal y como les informamos hace unos momentos, aproximadamente a las 12 y media de este domingo ocurrió un hecho de violencia en el estacionamiento del supermercado Chedraui de este puerto.

De acuerdo a información preliminar sobre estos hechos, un joven acompañado de su pareja sentimental llegó al centro comercial a bordo de un Ford Mustang de color gris (con placas BGW 2562) y se estacionó en uno de los cajones.

Repentinamente se les emparejó una camioneta de color negro (al parecer Explorer), cuyo chofer les disparó con un arma calibre 45. Los balazos rompieron el cristal del lado del copiloto, donde se encontraba la dama.

Al momento no se precisa contra quién iba dirigida la agresión. Sólo la mujer resultó con pequeñas cortaduras del cristal que estalló por los impactos.

Despues de haber accionado el arma de fuego, el sujeto a bordo del vehículo negro se dio a la fuga con rumbo desconocido. Testigos de los hechos solamente dijeron que como característica el automóvil llevaba una calca de la santa muerte en la ventana trasera.

Wished I had kept it to this day... 36hp .. 34 mph all day.. could push start when the battery was dead by my self .. and it could "skim" across mud planes, and creeks ... if ya got your seed up enough.. floated it a couple of times..

Can you say you've never visited the scene of a crime commited in public? These things happen, here, and everywhere. So, what's your point?

Why don't you come down--as per my offer in the other thread--and learn about the real Mexico, not that stuff you pull out of cyberspace. It would do you a world of good.

At the very least, you'd learn that LOS CABOS does not LA PAZ make (and who ever said anything about "paradise"?).

Really enjoying your historical posts. I'm ready for more. The 44' power wagon? Now that would be something to see . Any pics?? How / why did your mom/family end up in La Paz at the end of WW11??

How soon you forget it wasn't that long ago you knew ALL about me--or don't you remember lecturing my friends about who I was? Now, as it turns out, you don't even know I live in La Paz?

And, as for the headline--not being a local, you wouldn't know that around here, people refer to that area as "Los Cabos" as in "voy a ir a Los Cabos mañana." "Los Cabos" was invented as a name brand by the Mexican Government in about 1980 when the area was selected as one of the first five Mega-tourist resort poles. Before then, there existed at the very tip of the peninsula the sleepy cannery town of Cabo San Lucas, which had one of the first fly-in resorts, built in the 1960s. About forty miles up the dirt road along the coast was the old mission town of San Jose del Cabo. When the government designated "Los Cabos" as a destination, they were basically creating a tourist corridor that runs between the two capes.

But anyway, no word on my offer. What's the matter, afraid a little reality might make your illusions harder to maintain?
I've already received several u2u's that say I'm wasting my time, that you'll only see what you want to see, that there are better people to drink a beer with...but I just can't help wondering...

Actually, that was my stepfather's idea of what a proper archaeologist's vehicle should look like. In practice, it was a totally inadequate, heavy, hot, slow, thirsty and rough ride with the turning radius of a Mack truck. I remember many a hairpin turn on grades such as Infiernillo outside Santa Rosalia (13 switchbacks) that required backing up with brakes that were always suspect. No fun, even for kids. I think I have a slide somewhere of the old truck I may be able to find, I'll keep it handy for the next time this topic comes up.
