Violence related to Mexico's drug wars might make headlines, but it doesn't seem to be putting a damper on tourism, if tallies released by the
country's tourism ministry are accurate.
December saw an all-time record number of foreign visitors – 1,072,180 – up 13% from the previous December. It's the fifth consecutive month with
year-over-year gains and about half of those visitors are American.
Almost 13,000 people died in drug-related violence during the first nine months of 2010, the government has confirmed. But most of the carnage is far
from the country's most popular tourist areas, such as Cancun.
The Financial Times reports that Mexico's "tourism sector has never been stronger. … the overall figures show that the fall in tourism in 2009 was
mainly the result of the U.S. financial crisis and the outbreak of swine flu in Mexico, rather than because of security concerns stemming from the
country's drugs war."DENNIS - 2-4-2012 at 02:49 PM
Most Americans know about as much of what's happening in Mexico as they know about the economy of the USA. They only assume what they know about both
and it ain't much.yellowklr - 2-4-2012 at 03:42 PM

A good # of my acquaintances here in So. Orange Co.,
made frequent trips driving so. of the border, Rosarito, Ensenada,
NONE will do that in the last 4-5 yrs., they will however fly to the Cape, Vallarta, etc. There appears to be a definate
destinction among them as to the willingness to
fly as opposed to drivingbajaguy - 2-4-2012 at 04:04 PM

Good report, I feel safe in Mexico. However, it seems to me that tourism in Ensenada is down compared to 3-4 years ago. I am not complaining because I
frustrate when there is alot of traffic. " me gusta cosas tranquilo"BajaBlanca - 2-4-2012 at 06:25 PM

mmm, myself or others in my circle transit Tijuana via Otay to visit orphanages in the area on pretty much a weekly basis. Of course most of these are
located in the very poor areas, but one must drive extensivly through many neighborhoods of all status to get to those areas. I take the route back
through Tecate sometimes stopping at remote orphanages on the way and often learn of others that I place on a list for another day. In all those
years, never a problem. mmmmm.paranewbi - 2-4-2012 at 07:18 PM

Friday's adventure included an unexpected stop in Tijuana. My knowledge of Tijuana is limited to the various ways of crossing the border back to the
U.S. I have no friends or business contacts in TJ. Friday's event reminds me that I need to change that.
Tijuana definitely has had a poor reputation for crime. I'm not paranoid about it, but, I have only spent one night in downtown TJ during my 5 years
of living in northern Baja. That was the 2011 Tijuana Beer Fest
My 1989 Jeep Cherokee "Classic"(translation: OLD) is getting a little tired. At 210,000 miles, it is moving closer to retirement. Jeep overheated in
Tijuana traffic on the way to the Otay Mesa border crossing Friday. I also noticed a cap missing on my power steering pump reservoir. The bumpy road
leading up to my neighborhood jiggles the life out of most vehicles.
Found a taxi on the east side of Tijuana where I was stalled. He knew of an auto part store in the area. Locked up the Jeep, took my backpack with
laptop and valuable stuff and off we flew. I used the sleeve of a spool of plumbing Teflon plumbing tape as my size template and brought that along
with me to assure size accuracy.
Auto parts store #1 didn't have the size cap I needed. Auto parts #2 also was lacking. But, Goldilocks, auto parts #3(a Napa store) had an
expandable universal cap, that my taxi driver buddy suggested.
Not only did the taxi driver spend and hour limo-ing me around. He helped me wrench the plug/cap onto the reservoir. After 75 minutes, he asked for
80 pesos. That's a whopping $6.50(USD). Threw him 100 pesos and I was on my way for an exciting 2 hour border line wait.
My only screwup, was not getting his card or phone # for future Tijuana adventures.
MIL GRACIAS a Usted y Su Familia!

This is what I think of all politicians...from both parties.
It must be so freeing not to be burdened with anything as inconvenient as a conscience...
