A trio of merlins cleaned out our neighbourhood last spring. They scream as they swoop like F-16s through spaces between houses and trees flushing out
prey. A steady rain of avian body parts from atop wooden telephone post, then...total silence. No wonder birds have more than 1 clutch of young each
season.

We love the many neighborhood Kestrels. I've rescued and released more than a few. Kestrels are small "finger falcons" who are very afraid of those
Merlins! They are also the only bird that can hover in place. The one you have pictured is a young female like the one below. The males have a
black band across their tail-feathers.

Woosh.. No big deal or anything but many birds can hover in place. Hummingbirds, Kites, Frigate birds and more.
