Road to Laguna San Ignacio and the Whales

From the beautiful town of San Ignacio, it is 44 miles to the Lagoon---that is what the sign says.

And now the first 18+ miles are paved eliminating some of the worst rocky areas. Don't speed too much on the pavement. Not far from the beginning of the road up a very small rise, there is one big pothole.

As you enter the center of San Ignacio continue on the road in front of the mission and you will pass the Hotel Posada and then take the first right past the primary school. Follow the signs and you are on your way.

The very first part for just a few hundred yards is rocky dirt, but then the pavement starts and continues for approximately 18 miles.

After the pavement ends, the road is in the best condition we have ever seen over several years. The rocky areas are few, there is some washboard but where it is the worst, there is a side road. There are some soft areas--just keep moving! Over the causeway, just take it a little slow over the ruts.

It took us about 1 1/2 hours not driving too fast and stopping a few times for pictures and just to enjoy the vistas.

It is just a beautiful trip out there which is one of the reasons we love visiting this whale lagoon.

A few pictures of the diverse landscape from this trip and from past years.

The lumpy road

Vistas from the road

A flat area we think is great

The fantastic cardon forest

Friends along the way

And if you don't want to take your own vehicle, no problem, sign up in town for whale watching and take their van out to the lagoon.
