Fuel Overcharge In Guerrero Negro

bajaguy - 2-6-2012 at 09:13 PM

From The Baja Western Onion - Monday, February 06, 2012:

Fuel Overcharge In Guerrero Negro - Everyone traveling north and south be aware of a situation at the PeMex nearest the flag in Guerrero Negro. It's the one located just north of the entrance to GN. They are, once again, shorting on the amount and overcharging by 10 pesos per litre. I questioned the man in charge and showed him all of my other facturas. He shrugged and said it was because of the higher cost of cargo. We wondered how come the one just north of that PeMex was totally full of vehicles getting fuel and yet when we drove into the one closest to town it was deserted. We thought perhaps he was out of fuel. He said no. We should have kept going right then.

Predatory Pe-mex-es

KaceyJ - 2-6-2012 at 10:06 PM

Last I knew was the Pe-mex at JM was ejido owned and kept fairly straight .

Plan your trip to fuel up there . Stay out of the Eagle station and anywhere in town.

surfdoc - 2-6-2012 at 10:42 PM

Going North I fill at Vizcaino then top off at JM, comin g South it's fill at JM and top off at Vizcaino...

Stay away from GN.............

No way. That's an overcharge of around $3.00 per gallon.

When I have checked the new station in town (GN) using my fuel jugs it has been right on (and always busy).

I see big motor homes in these nice new stations, that have no business, and are shorting their customers. Don't they wonder why there is no business there, or do they just feel lucky they picked a station where they can get right up tho the pump.

It will be interesting to see how the new station in Vizcaino does.

Strange to now have 3 gas stations in Vizcaino. We still use the old one that always has customers, but the pressure from having two stations must be getting to them. They seem to be painting, fixing up and the bathroom was cleaner than usual last time we were there.

Until we see lots of locals at the new stations, we will stick to the old station.

Russ - 2-7-2012 at 08:00 AM

I got ripped at the mulege station on the hwy the other day:mad:

Ateo - 2-7-2012 at 08:08 AM

The only way to really know if you're getting ripped off is to use a calibrated device to measure.

Everything else seems like a complete guess.

Unless you have a 20 gallon tank and it takes 23 gallons to fill it.

Or unless they are over charging by $3 gallon like bajaguy says above.

woody with a view - 2-7-2012 at 08:12 AM

i don't buy it. $3/gallon surcharge? why not call the cops? did they get a reciept from them to make their case to pemex?

edit: you/your = they/their

Ateo - 2-7-2012 at 08:14 AM

Also, the dude admitted to you that the pump was shorting for the extra transport cost? Not doubting you, just wondering if that's what he said. :D

wessongroup - 2-7-2012 at 08:21 AM

Would have loved pictures ... and gee maybe audio too...

Ya turn off the cruiser's camera ...:biggrin:

Diana
I still use the old station as well. The station south of town is no competition. I heard the new station in town is owned by the Diaz corp (the Baja Sur fuel transport company). I know the family (Ibarra) who owns the old station. I'll ask them what their plans are next time I see them.

The station North of GN has been a problem from day one. That is why it is always empty (except for the occasional traveler).

And my calibrated device is my 5 gallon fuel jug (with a 18 litre mark on it as well). I check stations as I get fuel for the quads and boat.

Got it. Thought this was your experience. Thought the Baja Onion was some sort of riff off the onion news site. :)

wessongroup - 2-7-2012 at 09:38 AM

Darn.. now it's not as much fun... sorry, didn't pay attention to the intro... :):)

Phil C - 2-7-2012 at 09:45 AM

rts551 Isn't 5 gallons 19 liters? or more correctly 18.95 liters. Ok now I get it, the can has both marked so you can check 18 liters as well.

You got it. some cans are only 5 gallons (no markings). Those I figure 19 litres. The better fuel jugs are marked in both litres and gallons.

Our calibrated device is real simple --where are all the locals buying gas.

It will be interesting to see what happens in Vizcaino.

shari - 2-7-2012 at 10:41 AM

diane got it right...I think it was mentioned here before too...use the pumps where the taxi's line up! In GN, there is a single pump at the teeny weeny Pemex past the hospital where all the taxi's go...there is always a line up at that particular pump....wonder why?

Udo - 2-7-2012 at 04:39 PM

When in GN, we always fill up at the one lonely, one pump, Pemex. Extremely nice attendant (I am guessing he is also the owner).
The station is almost all the way west of the town just before you get to the salt plant.
It's also a good excuse to stop at the "vampiro" stand a couple of blocks before.

Bajahowodd - 2-7-2012 at 04:39 PM

I think it was three years ago. We were staying at Caracoles in GN. We were heading South. I mentioned to the desk clerk that I was going to be soon in need of gas. He cautioned me to not go to the Pemex way into town because thy were ripping people off. He recommended we go to the First station in Vizcaino by the Asuncion turnoff to fill.

This was before the new Pemex opened opposite Caracoles.

Methinks that since virtually all Pemex stations are franchised it is very difficult to determine the good guys from the bad.

That said, last month, although I would never fill at it, the South Vizcaino station was a stop simply because one of our party really needed a restroom. Unlike almost all of the newer stations, I found that this one had no amenities. No store. Nada. Just four guys playing cards in an empty room.

GUERRERO (= Warrior) :light:

GUERRO (= 0)

Ateo - 2-7-2012 at 06:58 PM

I feel I must stick up for Guerrero Negro. It's not the armpit. Cut it some slack......

Off topic: I find myself using Guerrero Negro as an example of where I go in Baja (half way down). I do go further south but most of the time I'm in this area. I work with a lot of Mexicans and when I head south they always ask where I went in Baja.

Cabo? La Paz? Ensenada?

"No", I say, "Guerrero Negro", north or south give or take 100 miles.

They usually look at me and ask, "where's Guerrero Negro?". Half way down.....

I'm not making any sense here, totally rambling so I'm hitting the eject button.

Later.

And why do you think (in your opinion) Guerrero Negro is an armpit????

shari - 2-8-2012 at 12:00 PM

I lived in GN for many years and while it isnt a tropical tourist destination, it does have it's merits.

One thing I liked was that it has a psuedo cosmopolitan atmosphere because unlike many mexican towns, it has a large population from other places like DF, Guadalajara, Sinaloa, San Luis Potosi...professional people that came to work at the ESSA, salt works. So there are more "cultured" folks that bring or participate in things like sports, nightclubs, theatre etc.

They are more progressive, open minded and educated so there are events where one can have spirited conversations with interesting people about diverse topics.

So socially, GN was more fun...there is a local market for entertainment so they even had live rock and roll bands play on the weekends, discos, sports bars, excellent dining choices, good motels etc....unlike Asuncion that doesnt even have a bar!

GN has so much to offer in the way of food, lodging and entertainment compared to other towns in the county. You can actually get chinese food, italian, japanese etc. It also has excellent services like dentist, mechanics, welders, hardware stores etc.

There are also many unique natural areas many tourists passing through dont know about like La Isla and the wetlands around it, el Canal, Ojo de Liebre lagoon, Las Dunas out by the airport is stunning, La Posita, a great swimming spot, Tomatal and Laguna Manuela are day trips.

The weather pretty much sucks as it is cloudy most mornings, gets sunny for awhile and closes in again in the late afternoon...but the people are friendly and fun.

Hola, great post,,Ive also have found it to be on the cold side,,and one of the foggeest area's,,like down on the deck fog, going inland for long as_ way !! K&T

shari - 2-8-2012 at 12:09 PM

I was told that it has it's own microclimate caused by the thousands of hectares of salt evaporation ponds...evaporation=cooling...which makes it's own cloud...makes sense. Cars sure rust out fast there!

Lee - 2-8-2012 at 12:27 PM

Yeah I fill up in JM going coming and Vizcaino.

Don't mind saying I love GN. Always have. First, it represents crossing over into BCS -- warmer weather, more fun. Next stop, Santa Rosalillia and the Cortez.

I like fog and GN reminds me of San Francisco weather. Blows through, clears then sunny, then returns. You can smell the ocean.

GN has good people, places to eat and stay, and estuaries. Definitely dog friendly and fun to walk.

Here's a GN experience: I watched a young man/woman (MX) on a jet ski going back and forth in one of the estuaries. They were spinning around having fun, getting some speed and then passing it on to another member of their group. After seeing me watching for awhile, the guy, the driver, offered me the water craft. Like ''common have fun take it!'' I declined but thought where else can this happen? Not to many places to me.

Roberto - 2-8-2012 at 12:28 PM

I agree with those that are defending GN. The place grows on you, and once it has, you realize there's really quite a lot to see there, and unlike some other places on the peninsula, I've had few bad things and lots of good things happen to me there. But then again, I stay at El Morro more often than not when I'm there.

I mean how cool are the Ospreys all over town?
