Just wondering. After reading the thread about off-roading near Mike's ranch, it might be useful in the event I run across an angry Gringo somewhere.
So far the locals haven't given me much reason to be concerned but after reading that, I got a little worried. (joking)
But really - is this legal?

I wouldn't want to get shaken down at a reten with that thing......
It may be legal, but they're gonna tell you it isn't because they want one....
Just sayin'.....LOLPescador - 2-14-2012 at 03:47 PM
You have to get close enough to use it.Bajamatic - 2-14-2012 at 03:49 PM
I cannot find a straight answer anywhere online. Its either:
1 - it's not "illegal", so it must be legal
2 - its only legal for police and/or military
3 - its legal, but tazers are NOT
or 4 - don't go to mexico.
All of which appear to come from "people who know".Bajamatic - 2-14-2012 at 03:57 PM
I'm not looking for any preemptive measures. I want something my wife can use in case someone breaks into our house (its LOUD - would scare most
house thieves in a heartbeat), or someone attacks her on a walk.
I happen live somewhere I fear much more than mexico, but if I DO buy it, I would want to know if she's allowed to carry it in Mex.bigzaggin - 2-14-2012 at 04:02 PM
Bajamatic -
You'll be hard pressed to find a definitive answer...but as I understand it ANY tazing device requires a permit in Baja. Regardless, whomever you use
that thing on had better be alone or all it's gonna do is pee off his buddies. Bajamatic - 2-14-2012 at 04:05 PM
see??? Spoken by "someone who knows".
So, who do you know who has a "tazing device permit"?
And for the record, you will probably be the first person I taz. I'll need to be sure it works, and that's really the only way....Udo - 2-14-2012 at 04:09 PM
The person who would know should be chiming in by now.bigzaggin - 2-14-2012 at 04:10 PM

My buddy Carl - an ex-pat Marine down near BOLA - used to carry one. He once got popped by local cops who shook him down (mordita!) for $50 and then
took the darn tazer! I say a man's gotta protect himself, but I don't make the laws.
carl, the ex-pat marine living near BOLA needs a TAZER?
nice try.

I didn't say he ONLY had a tazer...Bajamatic - 2-14-2012 at 04:18 PM
so what else did he have? And how much was that mordida? Sounds like an interesting yarn, Big Z.DENNIS - 2-14-2012 at 05:39 PM

Oh c'mon Dennis, don't be so soft! We both know the most effective weapon against a midnight ambush by meth'd out narcos is a flashlight/tazer. DENNIS - 2-14-2012 at 05:56 PM

Yeah...I know you're right, Zag. I'm just an old traditionalist.
Here's my choice:
".....if it's questionable.....don't do it" applies well in Mexico.Bajatripper - 2-14-2012 at 06:46 PM

Darn, I thought that was the point of moving down here, so we could do questionable things we'd never do back home.David K - 2-14-2012 at 06:49 PM

Seriously! Next thing you know, they will make fireworks and fattening food illegal, just like here!woody with a view - 2-14-2012 at 06:54 PM
the thing is, is if you need to use it you will up close and personal with the tweeker when you zap the crap out of him. if you're walking downtown
ensenada it might draw some attention. if you're out in the sticks who's gonna know?Lee - 2-14-2012 at 08:55 PM
Just did some research and this stun might work in some situations but I wouldn't trust it. You can find ratings/reviews and youtube videos showing
tests done.
At most, you'll hurt the person, they'll feel pain, pull away, but this thing won't put them down. Probably just pi$$ them off -- even if it sounds
dangerous, it really isn't. Like getting an electrical shock -- and think someone drunk or on drugs wouldn't feel a thing.

But. Are they legal in Mexico? I still can't figure that out. Worthless? Probably. Legal? TDBDENNIS - 2-15-2012 at 08:30 AM

I doubt you'll ever get the definitive answer to that, or a million questions just like it. Most lawyers here wouldn't even know where to look for
the answer as the law books precede the existance of stun guns.
As in most cases of questionable "tools as weapons" issues, it's not what you have in your hand, but what you do with it.....using the machete as
an example.
It's all a matter of personal choice, what you prefer to be in extreme cases....Legal or Dead. It really isn't much of a choice...is it.
I do, however, remember seeing stun guns for sale in the gift shop at Rodriguez [Tijuana] International Airport.....albeit, pre-9-11.DENNIS - 2-15-2012 at 08:40 AM

How many of us in a macho moment haven't taken the opportunity in a cantina to hold in each hand the metal rods wired to a transformer and showing
everyone around us our exceptional tolerance to electrical shock, then PAYING for the experience.
Shocking....ain't it.
