OTHER Bad Guys.

Is there a Downside here ?

They arrested all the prison staff for working with the Zetas. The prison system never seems to advance.

Woooosh - 2-20-2012 at 03:58 PM

The brawl and 44 deaths was a cover for the breakout of 30 Zetas from that prison. $800,000USD reward for their return.

"Prison brawl in Mexico was cover for jail break, authorities say.

By Tracy Wilkinson. Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
February 20, 2012, 10:52 a.m.

A prison riot that left 44 inmates beaten or knifed to death served as cover for a massive jail break by members of Mexico's deadliest criminal gang, the Zetas, authorities said Monday.

Thirty Zeta members escaped from the maximum-security Apodaca prison in northern Mexico during Sunday's brawl -- with apparent complicity of guards and possibly other top prison officials, the authorities said.

The prison warden, three other penitentiary officials and 18 guards have been suspended and detained for questioning, said Rodrigo Medina, governor of the state of Nuevo Leon, where Apodaca is located (link in Spanish).

"We can say without a doubt that this was premeditated and planned," Medina said in a news conference, where he offered a nearly $800,000 reward for information leading to the recapture of the escapees.

"This isn't a thing where, in the middle of a riot, it occurred to these people to escape," Medina said. "There was a plan, which undoubtedly relied on the complicity of some officials."

The deadly violence and the escape underscored the abysmal condition of Mexican prisons, woefully overcrowded, rife with corruption and riddled by violence. While such troubles plague penal systems throughout Latin America, the problems are especially acute in Mexico, where a military crackdown on drug cartels has helped fill cells often to more than double capacity.

blanca....there is NO comparison to the fire in honduras and this anomaly...NONE!

Almost sad, from my perspective, in that a major national election is forthcoming.

Many have speculated that if PAN were to be ousted, PRI would somehow be able to restore what there was in the past, where the drug guys were able to do what they do under the radar, with little loss of life.

Seems to me that between the first PAN guy, Fox, and the Bushies, the war on drugs was able to enrich numerous contractors.
Seems fairly obvious that the Obama guys are no more sympathetic to the idea that soft drugs are not a major problem. It's all about the money.

I'm not very clever or smart. But what I have witnessed in my lifetime, from Nixon, angry at the war protestors, classifying pot as akin to antrax, to the subsequent presidents continuing to fund an unwinable "war on drugs" merely to enrich their contractor friends, A sad folly resulting in enormous taxpayer payouts to result in the deaths of so many.:(

It's a method to diminish overcrowding. Doncha think overcrowding is a problem? I think overcrowding is a problem. Poor boys... crowded in their cells like that. I know they'd rather be dead.

Poor boys...

EnsenadaDr - 2-20-2012 at 06:40 PM

Wow, you feel sorry for prisoners...but NOT for poor old Tillie Foster...she is still waiting for her flowers, if you don't send them...I will...on my own dime...!!!

Oh, the Horror !

Reading Odd's essay on the Hopeless Futility, I can hear the Violins in the Background.

Yeah, Sure, You Betcha.

The Prison Plucking was just an example of taking out the Trash.

None will be missed.

The biggest problem I have is that it was planned in advance. One inmate died for ever Zeta allowed to escape. What is sad is many men in jail have not been charged or convicted yet. They just don't have money or connections to get out. The legal and prison systems are no match for the narcos money. The guards probably got millions and they will get to reunite with it eventually. El Tio used to carry five million with him in suitcases for "I need it now" bribes. Just a business expense to these guys. Who knows, the Zetas may have "break me out of prison clauses" in their employment contracts. ;)

".....What is sad is many men in jail have not been charged or convicted yet. They just don't have money or connections to get out."

You seem to be a rarity in here .....for understanding the conditions of what a prisoner is up against in the Mexican system. There are indeed many sitting in there without being formally charged....much less having to been in court for their trail.

A good friend of mine from Woodland Ca ....Aladino.....got into trouble down there in Guadalajara....after a night at the SunDowner Club. His buddy got in a wreck with the car they were driving ....going back to the hotel ..... injuring another driver. The buddy had coke in his procession. My friend did not. Fact was ...he didn't do drugs.

Eight years later......he got home. This is a true story.

So yes.....innocents were killed in that jail break out. Not all men in a prison deserve to die.

Whenever something like this happens, I'd like to see a "Breakdown" on the Dead " victims" and their records so an objective judgment could be made as to who DID or did not deserve their fate.

It would settle one way or another, all of this hand-wringing over "possible" innocents.

The death penalty does not exist in Mexico.

As Mexicans predisposed to killing are well aware.

If I were to do me some killing, Mexico is the place I'd pick. ;D

Seriously Though, Dave ............

MrBillM - 2-25-2012 at 08:31 PM

IF you NEED (or just WANT) to kill someone, choosing the National venue isn't "usually" an option.

Other than husbands and wives on vacation, that is.

However, if I were given the chance to pick, it would probably still be the U.S. given the Legal guarantees.

Since most intend to get away with it, the Death Penalty isn't that much in play at decision time.

AND, the odds are with you.

I saw a statistical analysis once that said there was an arrest in less than 50 percent, an indictment in less than 50 percent of the arrests and a conviction in less than 50 percent of the trials.

Better than Vegas odds.

You can OFTEN get away with murder.

Plan well and don't involve ANYONE else.
