Does anyone know the current status of rental car insurance requirements?
We have annual coverage on our cars in Baja thru Qualitas as well as coverage thru our credit cards.
Will we still be required to buy insurance thru the rental car company when we rent a car on the mainland?

There are only a few rental car agencies that will allow you to drive the car into Mexico. Enterprise is one. I think there is a nomad connection to
an agency that does this. I'm sure someone will post the link. Most US Auto polices cover your US Plated vehicle as far south as about Ensenada.

I'm sorry I was unclear--we are in Baja and renting a car for a short trip over on the mainland. Not taking a rental car from the US into Mexico.

You don't describe your situation.
However, if you are flying into Mexico, PV, Cancun etc. and you rent a car, your mexico car insurance annual policy will not work. If you read
carefully, it says it only covers cars licensed and insured from the USA.
I use my AMEX insurance policy to cover liability but you must buy the collision, or at least you should.
PS if you are renting in Mexico, take a look at the american express travel page, they have some great prices on rentals.

Since no one has answered your question.....
1) Mexican car rental agencies will require you to pay basic liability coverage....you have to buy it.
2) Mexican car rental companies will try to insist that you purchase collision damage and comprehensive coverage....you don't HAVE to, but you likely
want that coverage....you can get this coverage by paying them....
3) OR.... your credit card may well have such coverage included....when I researched this at great length a few years a go, VISA assured me that
their card would cover collision and comprehensive costs in every country on the planet except Ireland and some country that has no vowels in its
name....
Mexican companies try to tell you that you HAVE to pay their collision and comp.....NOT TRUE !!!!
Hertz in Ixtapa and Oaxaca accepted my credit card coverage for CDW and comp... the principle is the key issue here....not the location.
Call the companies ahead of time and see which ones will accept the credit card coverage....or just initial the rental form declining this coverage if
you use your credit card for the rental....and confirm this with your card company first. Any costs due to collision and comp issues will be covered
by your credit card.....read that brochure
I have been doing this for 12 years and it works....

Europcar provides minimum liability insurance for no extra cost. All other coverage is optional.

a short trip within Chiapas. I don't think I mentioned anything about a trip to or from the U.S.
The answer for anyone who cares about renting a car within Mexico is that Europcar does not require you to sign on for optional insurance of any sort.
They include 250,000 pesos of liability insurance at no charge.
