CHIAPAS

Anyone ever been to Chiapas. I am planning ahead for next December, and want to spend the 21st hanging around at some Mayan ruins somewhere or other. Looks like Volaris only flies to Oaxaca.

It has been several years but I spent a couple weeks there back in 2004. I too checked out some of the ruins and explored the countryside. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I think when I went we flew to Oaxaca and then took a smaller commuter flight to Ocosingo?

Wouldn't you think there would be all kinds of special flights, special prices, one way? Time to shop for sure.

Spent years around San Cristobal de Las Casas, and Lagos de Montebello. Check out the MAYABEL campground in Palenque as a long term hangout. it's gonna be a freakin' zoo! "Uh hey man, uh hey you wanna, you know, like score some shrooms?" i would get there early. At my age I probably would get a room in Palenque town a month in advance and then be there to make sure it hasn't been rented out several more times.

we're going to Chiapas next week. Interjet and Aeromexico fly from San Jose to Tuxtla Gutierrez with good connections thru Mexico City.

Brings back memories, walked across the Bridge into
Mex from Guatemala yrs. back, I think the Mex city was Tapachula, before the internet
there was so little info on places things to see, just
some out of date travel book, I missed a lot . Wonder how many US Gringo types of travellers still get out and wander.
although things were different then, like a
decent room in Guat was $2.50, lots of Euros there,
they may be a little more adventerous than us
in the US

I am in Chiapas now and if you are planning a trip to be here bring you Baja rigs , most all hotels are booked for the Dec.21st time period......

joerover - 2-25-2012 at 08:27 PM

the fed says
"Chiapas: San Cristobal de las Casas is a major city/travel destination in Chiapas -see map (PDF, 286 kb) to identify its exact location: No advisory is in effect."

need to know why the photos dont post
they did before.

I expect I could camp for a couple of days somewhere if needed.
I will fly down, so no car. Is Chiapas much like Baja, no one cares where you camp? Would you recomend a hammock or tent for this trip? Have yet to check the weather, not to cold?
