Construction on San Felipe Malecon

mcfez - 2-25-2012 at 08:12 AM

Construction is continuing on the Malecon as the entire length of the sidewalk along the sea side has been torn up. On the opposite side, construction has progressed as far as Baja Mar. Dump trucks have now hauled most of the smashed concrete away as machines level the ground in preparation for the new sidewalks. New utilities have been put in almost as far as the Vaquita statue halfway, while new palm trees are being planted by the tourism office. At the far end, new designs in the cement have been poured and the sidewalk is almost complete, though still awaiting the installation of street lights.

Why don't you show a picture of San Felipe "bustling with gringo visitors" as you so stated on another baja forum?

Udo - 2-25-2012 at 08:57 AM

The road in front of the malecon still looks thrashed, Fez.

rubencastillo - 2-25-2012 at 12:13 PM

Does'nt look like it will be finish in two weeks for contingency, for the 250 race, hope it dont hurt the fish taco stand's..Thanks for the up date's and the pic,s:cool:

There were only 2 left, and they morphed into restaurants... It was fun when there were a dozen in that courtyard.

mcfez - 2-25-2012 at 01:21 PM

The malecone was very outdated in respect to visual appearance. To bring it back into a fair looking beach front town.....that will draw in repeating visitors......good for Restaurants and Inn keepers......and the rest of the economy of San Felipe. I just hope that they keep the trash pollution checked.

bajalou - 2-25-2012 at 02:01 PM

I was in San Felipe before contingency was held on the Malecon. It was held beside Hghy 5 just across from the sand dunes. It will survive a little construction.

sancho - 2-25-2012 at 02:55 PM

Not sure if 'Window Dressing' of the malecon will
draw any tourists that don't already go to SF. I can't
imagine there are many if any NEW Gringo Tourist
types that go to SF for the 1st time. I like the
Malecon atmosphere on a Sat. nite in warm months,
call it colorfully caotic. A few yrs. back when they had
a ban on alcohol on the Malecon, where locals would
sit on the wall and drink beer , don't know the current status, but
my last trips it was not enforced. I've always liked the local rustic flavor the way it was back in the day. I know the 4 lane Hwy
no. of SF is better, call me selfish, but I like things to not get
TOO sanitary, too pretty. Manicured streets was not what attracted me to SF 25 yrs. back, quite the opposite

Totally agree with you - it's a good thing. My comment was only intended to say that maybe it would have been better if they had waited until AFTER the race.

I think every beach city should have one. It puts the ocean front and center and adjacent businesses of all types prosper from them. Design and upkeep are another matter. I wish Rosarito Beach would get their act together and build theirs.

BajaBlanca - 2-25-2012 at 07:38 PM

even little ole la bocana is dreaming of a malecon ...of course they want to put it on the stinkiest, smallest, seaweed fullest beach but at least the lcoals are dreaming !!

BajaErin - 2-25-2012 at 08:21 PM

Thank you for the update mcfez, as we are going down March 17th for a week. Will be interesting to see it then.

That's right. Copyright protection (on a message board no less) is much more important than the topic of promoting San Felipe. The correct link to the article was posted. Based on this standard- there wouldn't be any linked posts with the poster copying the text as a courtesy to readers.

You would think they would have chimed in with a thank you and maybe a construction/tourism update instead. No good deed goes unpunished. It's too bad the officials there couldn't spend their time cleaning the polluted waters instead of policing the internet. jmo.

Promotion of the town is a huge priority and of great importance to everyone who wants to see the town grow. It is the reason why 3 hours were spent gathering information and photographs, and writing a comprehensive article on town developments. The sharing of this content is highly encouraged, but in a way that the authors and creators of the content receive due credit for their ongoing efforts.

The link had to be added by a forum administrator as original post contained no credit to the article's source.

Holly crap McFez, do you run into this kinda bullying and threats all over San Felipe? Nice job of promoting S.F. Anita. Couldn't care less who the author is on the poster. Just nice to see work being done in S.F. But now I don't think your doing anyone favors by responding to McFez like that. Now I'll just fade away back to my little oasis in Loreto. Hope the author gets all the credits:lol::no:

Oddjob - 2-28-2012 at 02:10 PM

I stayed in San Felipe a week and a half ago on a Friday night. Many of the shops and restaurants are closed. The town was dead except for the locals and in my 35 plus years of going there it has never been filthier. There is trash everywhere and the town stinks like sewage. It's going to take a lot more than a new malecon to fix San Felipe and attract visitors.

I don't think those images are part of the new marketing campaign. Mexico is a country of grown up "trophy-kids". The first half hour of any meeting or event is spent thanking and praising everyone for their hard work and contributions. The content is second. Credit before results.

There isn't a jail big enough in SF or Mexicali
to hold Sr. Mc Fez, all kidding aside, the correct
way to refer to someone's article/research is
appreciated and noted. I think we all
know that but it is good info

David K - 2-28-2012 at 03:49 PM

Heck, a Mexican magazine took a photo of mine and made it into the magazine cover! No, they didn't ask... and no, no mention of where they got the photo from or who took it.

If they had asked, I would have not only been happy to allow the use of my photo... but also I would have given them a far better one then the one they used (taken during gloomy day).

mcfez - 3-1-2012 at 10:57 AM

Yeah....Anita, you sure came into this like a bull. A nice note saying...."Hey....could you give us some credit please"....would had been cool.

I have posted MANY articles from the BLANK.com/mex web newspaper....and given the credit to your paper. There are times that I didn't...oversight. Since I know a few folks from BLANK.com/mex personally....I'll let them know what a great PR job you are doing for the paper.

What happen the the weather page at BLANK.com/mex? It's all so messed up...used to be straight forward when my neighbor, Shirley Thompson, was doing that part? She was great.

I'll promote Randy's website from here on out for good information about San Felipe http://www.blueroadrunner.com/

I agree with you sancho......about the correct way that is :-) Oversights do happen.....and that's all that it was. Look at the historic archives...anyone will see me giving BLANK.com.mex credit.....but I will now give randy at http://www.blueroadrunner.com/ the PR.

I dont like the Mexicali jail....their room service sucks. :-)

So being a photographer and having to deal with this every time I get enlargements for some of my commercial customers who need images for shows etc. Most photo printing locations will not enlarge any photos that look commercial without proof that you hold the copyright.

So here are some of the basic rules around photographs that can help:

1. Make sure you setup your copyright in your cameras so the EXIF file attached to your image supports your claim

2. If you have a public photo on the Internet make sure it shows your copyright, if it doesn't, no matter how bad the photo is, it can be used by anyone because it is in the public domain.

3. Even if a photo is copyrighted and it is taken from the Internet, it can be used , if, a certain percentage of change is made to it. I don't remember the amount of change, but it is less than 50%
So if you use photoshop and add layers of different information it can be used. Kind of like musicians sampling other artists music to make a new song, totally legal.

I checked and there is a copyright on sanfelipe.com that states all information is copyrighted.

Also you can not take a photo of an individual that is used for commercial purposes without a model release.

Ps I do have some photos from the construction a week ago that I will upload later

So it is correct

Warn

I don't think we have to worry about loosing the "sleepy" status for some time to come. :tumble:

Bajahowodd - 3-3-2012 at 04:34 PM

I suppose any improvement is good. Reminds me of the work they did on the malecon in LA Paz a few years back. What La Paz has today is quite beautiful.

However, the diff is that when La Paz undertook the rehab of the malecon, it was already a grown-up city. Just don't know what an enhanced malecon is gonna do for a place where ATVs run roughshod all over the place, kicking up dust in town.

willardguy - 3-3-2012 at 04:45 PM

well it cant hurt!

CortezBlue - 3-3-2012 at 06:33 PM

We were in Puerta Vallarta for Christmas and they redid the malecon and it was really nice.

Instead of having all of the one way traffic zipping by why your trying to eat, all you hear now is the ocean.

They removed all of the street and replaced it with uplit palm trees and pavers for foot traffic.

It is really relaxing in comparison to the way it was

That thing in San Felipe does not meet the specifications or definition of a "malecon". In my humble opinion.
