Coming from Las Vegas (Mid March),
Which border crossing is recommended as I head South towards San Felipe?
Also given that it is the first time that I am crossing with a vehicle. Particulars of where to get a permit/papers would also be appreciated.
....and I did do a search for border crossing before posting.
Algodones
Calexico
etc.

I personally used Algodones.
No vehicle papers needed for Baja. (Just US registration)
But you do need Mexico liability insurance.

Wouldn't Mexicali be your best bet?

If your stay in SF is prolonged, you're supposed to have an FMM....a tourist permit. That regulation is often ignored without incident by US
travelers, but I'm just sayin'.
Let your conscience be your guide.

I Would Use Calexico East

If this is your first time crossing then I would use Calexico East.
Algadones is fine if you know where you are going and if you don't then you will end up paying to use the toll road.
Calexico West is torn up repaving just inside the border so southbound traffic is detoured over to the northbound lanes.
I have lived here 14 years and haveonly been asked for my immigration papers crossing south at GN.
Insurance and registration should do.
There is a map of the Calexico Routes here:

If that link is too big, go to http://www.blueroadrunner.com/phpbb and in the search box enter 'Mexicali Border Crossing Map' without the quotes of course.

I would second the vote for Algodones.....16 pesos to quickly traverse H2 is a dollar and change.....very nice, quiet crossing with a quick visa
process and minimal traffic or waiting times......exited through there just 2 days ago...great experience.
