Punta Final and Calamajue'?

brewer - 2-28-2012 at 04:36 PM

Are there any secluded beaches south of Puertecitos to camp? We just took MEX HWY 5 down and couldn't find much. Puertecitos was like a ghost town. Gonzaga's palapa's looked alright, just kind of busy for us.

Has anyone been out to Punta Final or Calamajue'? Is there beach camping out there? Any pictures?

We love that route down for now. But won't come home through Mexicali. We came through on a Sat. afternoon( I know, big mistake ) and waited in line for almost 2 hours and it was 104F. So we'll come up and cut over on MEX HWY 3 to Ensenada to Tecate.

Thanks for any info.

I don't need a David K map. I have a good one. Just some info and maybe a picture or two. Ha Ha.

Free camping N. of Gonzaga

Free is good! Just south of Puertecitos.

The fishing is good as is the hwy access.

Beautiful coastline

If you use the SEARCH feature at the top of the page, you can view the photos taken at both places. Did you drive in and see the big beach at Punta Bufeo, 5 miles north of Gonzaga?

Also, no need to cross over to Ensenada to get to Tecate from San Felipe... Drive north on 5 to 2-D or 2 well signed for Tecate and Tijuana from Mexicali. 2-D avoids the city entirely and costs about $4 dollars to use for the first part.

I just did a quick search and found photos and a YouTube video at Puerto Calamajue from Nomad 'TheBajaKid' in 2010:

I smell a map coming. that is priceless!:lolI was out to calamajue a few months ago and it was one of the coolest side trips Ive made. It is a long way but the road is excellent. I don't know what the heck happened out there but it looks like someone bombed it. the giant palapa and surrounding buildings on the beach are destroyed. the school and cluster of small homes are deserted. there's a brand new fish processing plant that's abandoned and looks like it was hardly used. there's a deserted rancho as you approach that somehow got sidetracked. not a soul between coco's and the beach, very weird. besides all the trash around it has a great little cove that would be perfect for kayaking. I think its your only hope for a secluded spot but I wouldn't camp there without a group, I bet its a little spooky at night. and yes, it appears to be a smugglers paradise.

We camped last year at Punta Final. No palapas but beautiful cove to swim in. Just ask at the gate.
Also There's Campo Salveterria and Beluga with palapas.

We did pull into Punta Bufeo and Campo Delfines and there seemed to be no place to camp. All gringo houses.

Is it a shorter to take 2D to Tecate? Rumerosa right?

Maybe we'll look into Beluga.

Punta Final.....is great!

Go into the cluster of homes there, stay to your right. There's a dirt rode going over that hill (next to a old house. If chained , ask around and you'll get in. Very nice primitive camping there. You'll find it a wow factor once you get there.

GREAT for fishing...scuba...hell of big campfires....no hordes of humans. See the night sky like you never seen it before. There is NO improvements there.

Gonzaga.....www.papafernandez.com
Go in....and proceed following the dirt road beyond the hill at the end of this camp's area. Takes you to a secluded area that is great for primitive camping.

South of Black Mountain...at it's southern coastal edge....you'll see a dirt road going up to that area. Follow the road up the hill...at the peak...you'll see a VERY COOL little cove. Wind protected. 4w recommended to get into the cove area...or you can walk your gear down...not a hard thing to do. No improvements.

Jeez are you guys really poking at David for his maps?

Go ahead and tear him up for his politics and getting into conversations he wasnt invited to, but those maps are GOLD!!!

Lets face it. The guys has many decades of well documented experience that he freely shares. I appreciate those maps.

The maps are out there. Some of us don't believe in infringing on somebody's copyrights.

Mcfez was the picture you posted of the white sand beach, Punta Final or that Black Mt. place you were talking about?

woody with a view - 2-28-2012 at 08:33 PM

final...

brewer - 2-28-2012 at 09:28 PM

nice...

aguachico - 2-28-2012 at 09:59 PM

Been to Calamajue. It's a fish camp that does net repair. Cool looking down on top of the Island. Sheer drop off next to the beach made for cool kayaking. They had a large palapa with a cemet floor for $5 a night. Once was enough though.

mcfez - 2-28-2012 at 10:08 PM

I 'm sorry! It is that of Punta Final.

BTW...some of us call it Snoopy...you can see him laying down staring at the sky :-)
