Whales in the Northern Sea of Cortez?

So I have often been asked by my friends and family if there are any whales near San Felipe?

So I tell them about the Vaquita but as far as I know it is to far north to get hump backs or any larger whales.

Has anyone seen any larger whales in this region?

We have photos of finbacks and orcas off the Islas Encantadas.

I have seen what I think are humpback's 25 miles north of BOLA, and many times in Bahia de los Animas several years ago-----whatever they were, they were certainly "whales".

How far south are you from SF


The Enchated Islands begin with El Huerfanito, approx. 60 miles south of Bahia San Felipe.

We saw a beached pilot whale back off Campo Nuevo Mazatlan in '76 and helped it back in the water and it swam off. We've found two large (20-30' long) whale carcasses over the years but are unsure of the type.

Plenty of Dolphin too.

Wow!!!!! I NEVER knew that Orcas got up nearly that far North in the SOC--------amazing!!!!

I've seen what I think was a humpback at Gonzaga about 20 years ago.

I was a few mile from your picture here...a few years back. Fishing off my kayak. Much to my surprise.....a whale had surfaced 25 feet away from me. I almost panicked......not realizing that whales came up that far north.

Small whales have beached on Shell Island a couple of times, over the years... fortunately never close to where we camp. Couldn't identify them as to what kind of whale.

there were Fin Whales on new years day about a 1/2mile off shore in front of Camo Delicias.

This is said to be Cantu Cove which I believe is
JUST no. of SF, Humpback I think. I don't
think there is any upwelling in the SF area,
as in the Midriff area
of the Cortez, which starts the food chain,
but apparently there is at least 1 sighting, rare I 'm sure,

Good pix Chuck! BTY, Joe & Claudia are our neighbors up here in JT. Small world. Heard about the Orcas when they got back. As mentioned by Dave, several small whales have ended up on Shell Island. Luckily, the wind has always been going the right way!!!

Yes, I've seen many dead whales washed up on the Island over the years. You can walk right up to them but one step downwind and lose your lunch!

Joe was the only Quad rider on our Prez. Day Extravaganza ride to the the falls, 30 other vehicles too. Nice people!

We regularly see lots of Finback whales in Gonzaga Bay. They come into the bay in the spring time with their calves. You can tell they are on the way when the horizon looks as though there is a fleet of sailboats out there with no sails...that's the whales blowing. If you wanna smell a REALLY bad breath go fishing off of our beach when one of these gentle giants surfaces!! We have never seen Orcas in the bay but we have Whale Sharks in the bay a lot. They used to be rare and seen only in the late summer but now we see Whale sharks pretty much year round...and lots of them.

Punta Bufeo got it's name from whales blowing....that's about 100 miles below San Felipe.
