Mariachi Song Request

BajaRun - 2-29-2012 at 12:47 PM

When we are out eating in Baja I like to have a song or two played by the Mariachi, but I can never think of a song to request.. What are some songs other like to request ??

DENNIS - 2-29-2012 at 01:08 PM

Las Mañanitas....tell them it's your birthday and maybe you'll get free drinks.

Ohhh yeah....Welcome to BajaNomad, by the way.

Tip??? With what these guys charge for a song? Always ask first what their charge is....or ask someone. They ain't cheap.
In many cases, it's a customer machismo thing to order endless songs, but it'll hurt when the bill comes.

Loretana - 2-29-2012 at 01:16 PM

BajaRun......You might ask for

Guadalajara
Las Mañanitas
La Cucaracha
Canción Mixteca
El Mariachi
Ay Jalisco No te Rajes!
Mexico Lindo y Querido
La Bikina

If the musicians are a Trio group, you might ask for
La Vida No Vale Nada
Luz de Luna
Besame Mucho
Quisas, Quisas, Quisas

Just be prepared for the band to hang out at your table, and keep the 50 peso notes coming!!

PS Welcome to the Baja Nomad Forum

As I noted, more like Trio Groups, Dennis.......

The guys who go with a drunken suitor to serenade his sweetheart when her father won't let her out of the house! ;D

New York, New York

bajajudy - 2-29-2012 at 01:34 PM

If there is a trumpet, ask for El Nino Perdido.

sanquintinsince73 - 2-29-2012 at 01:37 PM

Most typical song request by "Gringos" is La Bamba.

sanquintinsince73 - 2-29-2012 at 01:41 PM

Once I get nice and sauced I ask for this one:

http://youtu.be/SQiOKK2xYSc

Udo - 2-29-2012 at 01:45 PM

These are MY favorites:

La Charreada
Ay Jalisco No Te Rajes

They'll get the rest of the crowd in the music mood!

dtbushpilot - 2-29-2012 at 02:02 PM

I'm not sure of the spelling but I usually request:
Sabor a mi
Solamente una vez

dean miller - 2-29-2012 at 02:20 PM

Desi Arnez made a song famous many many years ago titled
~~ "El Cumanchero" ~~

In all my many years of traveling in Baja other parts of Latin American and Spain I never found any one who knew the song--that is to one night in Ensenada about 15 years ago--the fellow as great!

And of course "Besame Mucho" is always a big hit with the ladies..
Any one recall Andy Russel who made it famous in the 1940?--big on the hit parade

Dave - 2-29-2012 at 02:26 PM

Why would you do that?

If you don't know of any songs to request then why would you care what they played?

Stupid requests musicians get:

Play something we can dance to.

or...

Play a song by "...." I love their music.

OK, which one's your favorite?

I can't think of one.

oooops...Thought you meant a trio of Mariachis.

OK.....how about making a request for "anything Mariachi by Linda Ronstadt."
Canciónes de Mi Padre....uno y dos

I think she did a great job with those, but Mexicans will turn her off 'cause she's not quite Mexican enough.

BajaRun - 2-29-2012 at 02:39 PM

I usually request Feliz Navidad, lol..Total Gringo Here !!!

DanO - 2-29-2012 at 02:43 PM

Malagueña Salerosa. Great song.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malague%C3%B1a_Salerosa

It has some tricky vocals and multiple guitar parts, so it's better with a two piece or three piece group, but I've heard credible versions by solos. The Tubes, amazingly enough, did a pretty good cover of it on their debut album, and it was on the Kill Bill 2 soundtrack. Here's a clip of the band Chingon doing a rocking, slightly electrified version of it live at the Kill Bill 2 premiere.

When all else fails, the requests start pouring in for "Foggy Mountain Breakdown."

This is Mariachi, ain't it?

bonanza bucko - 2-29-2012 at 02:55 PM

The absolute best one is COO COO COO COO COO LA PALOMA.:-)

DavidE - 2-29-2012 at 02:55 PM

Or the most mournful of them all

"La Que Se Fue"

la-kay-say-fway

or

"Cielito Lindo"

"Sigo si el rey"with

My earlier days in Mexico had me crossing the frontera with a JB 4-track stereo blasting out Herb Alpert on 8" speakers mounted in the package tray. Los Mexicanos went nuts over the sound, and I had to sit at curbside while 2 motorcycle cops got their fill of "Tijuana Taxi" and "Lonely Bull". Hell I was 17 years old. We thought we were screwed crossing back when US Customs stopped us and found 14 cases of Carta Blanca in the trunk and back seat of my almost new '63 ford. The gray haired inspector just shook his head and slammed the trunk closed. A young man tried to sell us a bag of pot the size of a basketball for 200 pesos. Drinks cost sixty cents while a lady danced nude on the bar top. A couple of hookers offered curbside service for 100 pesos. We passed. Anyway we paid for mariachis, seven of them for 2 hours at my birthday party at some hoity toity restaurant. I remember fighting the fog all the way up the central valley, and getting home in the wee morning hours. After three hours sleep I found myself at a bus stop waiting to be taken to a "Selective Service Exam" in downtown Oakland. That was some birthday! The cost of the mariachis was 900 pesos!

La Malaguena is an excellent choice and El Son de La Negra has a great intro. But, do ask "How much?" Before you get too carried away with the requests. :bounce:

Trouble is, you won't be getting Vargas de Tecalitlan.:biggrin:
Do remember the days of dollar songs in Mazatlan, PV, Cabo and Ensenada. Just can't remember how long ago.:biggrin:
Also, you had to be pretty sauced to get by the quality of the music.

Woooosh - 2-29-2012 at 03:25 PM

I blare the DirecTV music channel "Maricahi " every Sunday afternoon over the outdoor speakers. All the old original versions with no talking or commercials. Everyone sings along.

That's DirecTV Sonic Channel 876 Dennis. :P:P

I love the old black and white film of LOLA BELTRAN "PALOMA NEGRA" (1956). Great song and greater singer. But here are a few more. Some are better without mariachis.

My favorite song request is also Malaguena.

here is the original recording by a local La Paz musician.

The violin might need a bit of tuning but the guy just sung wonderfully to the ladies. I haven't seen him lately however.....

I agree with "La Malaguena and CU CU RRU CU CU PALOMA" . Both are my favorites. "Mariachi Vargas" does them the best. Although Juan Roldan at the Rosarito Beach Hotel has one on the most heartfelt versions of both I've ever heard. Try him when you're there..........;)...\
