I am heading south in about a week. I will be hauling a dirt bike this time. Do I need Mexican insurance for the bike?

Hey Ken!
It sounds like Nikon has new info I wasn't aware of, but I'd always thought that you did not need insurance for a bike UNLESS it was street-legal.
When crossing the border and passing checkpoints hauling my XR, the only questions I got were about how much it cost in the US, and if I wanted to
sell it.
If it's theft insurance you're worried about, or if you're planning on riding on the pavement, Nikon's right. If you're involved in any kind of
accident involving another vehicle and there's police involved, you'll want insurance for sure! You can get it through Lewis & Lewis in LA over the
'net, and it's cheap!

I wasn't sure if that last one was directed at me or not... In case it WAS for me, my bike isn't "street legal", although I do have a current (WA
State) ORV tag on it.
I keep it in Todos Santos, and just about the only time I ride on pavement is when I run into town to get gas.
As far as the legal stuff goes, I asked one of my friend's brothers (a Policeman) what the deal was, and he told me that I would be fine unless I was
involved in an accident, or I was speeding through town.
I'll double-check the link I used (Mexican Consulate) in the past and see if I can find out more. Will post again if I do!

Ken when or if you get insurance for your dirt bikes let us know what the insurance co. says and how much. I've never gotten any insurance on my dirt
bikes before but it maybe something I would consider for liability. There are times when getting on the hwy is necessary and certainly in town like

I Emailed my insurance co that I have my Drivers License insurance thru.
Here is there reply--
Lou,
All of our policies including the drivers? license policy cover Hi-Way legal vehicles only. Meaning they must have a license plate, turn signals etc.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.
Thank you for your inquiry.

So I guess one would have to see about other insurance specific to the vehicle?

We ended up buying a two-week policy from Discover Baja Travel Club for $78. That seemed like the safest thing to do.
