tripledigitken - 3-10-2012 at 12:36 PM

Would one of the bird experts please ID this little guy? He was hanging around in our backyard awhile back in La Mesa, CA.

Thanks

Hummingbird

Looks to me like a juvenile Anna's hummingbird. The Ruby-throated hummingbird's range ends about a thousand miles east of La Mesa, CA.

Female Anna's?

Jane Hathaway will know.
i don't think she is on nomads tho...

It's a tough call on this one. I did see a photo of a female Costa that looked very similar with the small yellow highlights and white throat, but???

BigOly,

Your second photo of the Costa does not look similar, the first could be but it's the back side which I didn't see.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

The above link contains pictures of a trip my friend's dad made to Ecuador. Mr. Edwards fotographed many different types of hummingbirds and the pictures are beautiful. Just in case any of you is interested and might even help to identify above bird.

Nice photo Angels4. Ken, by showing the female Costa's, in my own way I was trying to help eliminate that bird. I don't think it's a Costa's. I still think it's an immature Black-chinned Hummingbird.

Well, as long as you're on the subject of hummingbirds, here's a video that may interest.

Angles4 ... many thanks for the link .. that is some body of work that individual has done .. really like some of the birds he shot ... sword-billed Hummingbird, was something new, as were the colors of many of the birds... very nice:):)

Wow! Just wow!

I am glad you all enjoyed the pictures. If you go back to Mr. Edward's home page www.joelton.org You will find other amazing pictures. He is currently working on a butterfly exhibit. One of my favorite collections is his Yosemite 2011 photographs. They will take your breath away.
