Your favorite fishing tackle store is..?

Pompano - 3-11-2012 at 11:27 AM

Like most of us fishermen, I am always looking for some great deals on rods, reels, and tackle. In my case, I am coming cross-country from way the hell-and-gone Up North and can take advantage of several tackle shops along the way.

But..it seems that San Diego is the most handy and logical place to buy saltwater tackle supplies for Baja Sur fishing...both Sea of Cortez and Pacific sides. (90% of my fishing in on the Cortez side.) I'm hoping many nomads will have other recommendations on tackle shops in San Diego...or wherever it's handy for YOU.

Here's an old favorite of mine. 'Squidco' on Midway & Barnett, SD

3518 Barnett Avenue

I have shopped Squidco since it used to be nearer the downtown area...huge warehouse then. (Bought cases of #9 Rapala deep-divers there in the early 70's that were real fish-killers for my winters on the SOC.)

Other San Diego favorites is Fisherman's Landing at Shelter Island near Pt. Loma Seafoods...yummy place to eat.

West Marine on Rosecrans just seemed 'too spendy' for some gear?? Maybe your experience was different?

By the way...Day at the Docks is coming up soon, right?

Time to restock the RV for Baja and Beyond...

So...what shops are your favorite for good deals on tackle in San Diego? ..or maybe you shop online or wherever?

willardguy - 3-11-2012 at 11:47 AM

yup. charkbait.

sd - 3-11-2012 at 11:48 AM

Hook is correct - Charkbait is great. Online and stores in Huntington Beach (where I shop) and a newer store in San Diego.
Also, The Longfin in Orange, California.

Both are candy stores for fishermen. Take lots of $$ as they both have great stuff.

Pompano - 3-11-2012 at 11:54 AM

Great info about Charkbait.com...just mapped it in San Diego:

Will be shopping there next trip to compare with Squidco, which is in the same neighborhood. Fun times!

Fred Hall Show in San Diego at Del Mar is March 22-25. Great show with lots of show specials. Fishing, Hunting, Boats and Travel.

I have stopped in that little store from time to time...knowledgeable people.

Also used to shop Hook, Line, & Sinker for many years, but sad to say, they are out of business nowadays. I liked the Today's Fishing Reports they used to post at the entryway.

You betcha, Cypress. Cabela's is one great place for outdoorsmen-women to shop. I stop at two of them every time I head south to Baja, plus we have one close-by Up North for local purchases, too. Big game, waterfowl, fishing, camping, Duk-Shak decor, you name it...Cabela's has it.

This is a Cabela's I stopped to shop while passing through Billings, Montana on my route to Baja this last October...my kind of mall!

I bought goose decoys, camping cookware, sausage making equipment, and a coffin cooler for my Yarcraft.

Another thing I like about Cabela is their appreciation and presentations of the history of outdoorsmen in America. This shop had a remarkable photo gallery on hunting & fishing. This vintage photo reminds me of my Nodak fishing heritage..great fishing, , great companionship, great scenic waters..finest kind!

yeah...I like Cabela's, too..

Where else can you get a discounted price on quality polarized sunglasses and a cup of chili thrown in??

DavidT - 3-11-2012 at 03:45 PM

I've always liked Squidco, nothing fancy and the guys know their stuff.

You mentioned Point Loma Seafoods, have you tried Mitch's? Right down the way from PL.

J.P. - 3-11-2012 at 03:48 PM

BASS PRO in Springfield Mo. If they dont have it you dont need it,

chuckie - 3-11-2012 at 03:53 PM

Squidco was always my favorite, but since I dont go through San Diego anymore, its offshore angler via catalog...Cabelas is ok but high priced...

yellowklr - 3-11-2012 at 03:58 PM

Squidco for price and service
# 2 is Charkbait

For selection
Fisherman's and Anglers Choice

No, no. I have it shipped to friends coming down.

I'm in Phoenix right now for a week of baseball and a friend just brought me a new Avet LX 6/3 I ordered from Charkbait. I have never actually been in their store. Just online ordering.

Also ordered stuff from The Longfin that Charkbait was out of. It pays to order EARLY from Charkbait as they often seem to be out of some stuff. Hey, they're popular.

Going by Phoenix Fishing Supply in the next day or so. It has been recommended as the best saltwater tackle store in the Valley of the Sun. Just looking for some terminal stuff, at this point.

Pompano - 3-11-2012 at 06:39 PM

Craigslist anyone? Got some super deals in San Diego just before Xmas.

bigboy - 3-11-2012 at 07:53 PM

Jig Stop, located in Dana Point, for me for the past 30+ years!

aguachico - 3-11-2012 at 09:05 PM

Squidco is my number one. I have purchased from Charkbait online. Just got some killer Seeker trolling rods a few months back.

Squidco not being open on Sunday is a problem, but they are like family. It's amazing how Joey remembers everyone's name.

Pompano - 3-11-2012 at 09:07 PM

Well, no matter where you shop for fishing tackle...do not forget the Power of Pink!!

Yup..all caught on 'pink'.

Yeah, I do miss Larry Burson and the wife. Suddenly, they were just.........gone. The new owners seemed pretty knowledgeable, but I never really got to know them.

Jig Stop certainly gets the award for the most efficient use of space. That place is chock-full of tackle and not very big.

Bass Pro Shops

mcfez - 3-11-2012 at 09:33 PM

Rancho Cucamonga, CA or the one in Vegas.

I know this isnt near SD...but it seems that you travel a lot. It's a hell of a experience to go there.

bigjohn - 3-11-2012 at 09:39 PM

Always liked Sav-on Tackle in Santa Fe Springs. Used to go there when my pops was still alive but it was always interesting to see the latest in gear!

Hook - 3-11-2012 at 10:15 PM

I wonder how Yo's in Gardena is doing. Did Martin make it through his health issues? I used to go there after the FH Show in Long Beach because they usually had some great deals on line spooling during the show but the werent doing it AT the show. This was some time ago.

Heck, I probably havent been to A FH show since 2005.

ddawson - 3-12-2012 at 12:03 AM

I went to the Fred Hall show today in Long Beach. As usual, it was HUGE and fun. There was a lot of stuff for sale, but this year I practiced some self restraint. Just kept it to small goodies. I enjoyed cruising and checking out the new stuff. It was a great way to spend the day.

bigboy - 3-12-2012 at 07:26 AM

Hook,

Joan was Larry's wife. I would stop by the store just to talk to her....such fun!

The new owner Dave and long term staff, know their stuff and are very helpfull.

Yo's has been closed for quite a while, reasons I've heard are Martin's health and the economy.

The west side hasn't been kind to the tackle biz, Art's, Yo's, Purfield's, and Bob's all closed.

wilderone - 3-12-2012 at 08:37 AM

Si, Angler's Choice - ask when they have their parking lot sale.
Also Day at The Docs is April 15th this year (held at Point Loma Sportfishing area). Gear there as well.

Scheels Outdoors

Pompano - 3-12-2012 at 08:57 AM

Maybe you have bought tackle at one of these stores? This is a up-and-coming sports store chain I have watched grow since I was a kid in rural North Dakota. ... 'Scheels'

Started out as a small country store in a village of about 200 souls and has since spread around the midwest and western states. Honest prices and customer satisfaction helped this outfit.

The store in Fargo, ND is a biggy.. almost 200,000 sq ft, loaded with outdoor items of every description...plus has an inside Ferris wheel and archery range to try out your bow/arrow choices.

Way to go, Fred.

Miguel y Claudia's La Tienda in Mulege has a small but select assortment of lures, hooks, etc that will be of use to anyone fishing the Mulege waters.

The front counter is filled with tackle that works for this area.

Like whistler says..Support your local economy.

In this photo a cute customer is asking Miguel what lure to use for pompano?

He advises.."Try waving your bikini."

I used to like Fishermans Hardware in Long Beach, of course it didn't hurt that it was next door to Joe Jost's.

Charkbait is great, just don't try and order any Shimano.

I think that is my friend "T" who lives along the river in Mulege! She is a very sweet person! Her and her husband Bob live there during the cooler months. And, Bob loves to fish!

Owners only? What if the carry Gamakatsus instead? Or Hayabusas?

Japanese hooks are the best. But, unfortunately, I dont do as much live bait fishing as I used to. That's where the Nipponese mfgrs used to shine. Used to love flylining a pinhead 'chovie with an Owner or Gamakatsu with the live bait ring. Owner even made some light wire hooks with a ring, made for small baits. They were incredibly strong for their wire gauge. When the fleet only had pinheads (not the deckhands!) for bait and you were fishing for albies that only wanted the pinheads, these were the live bait hooks that allowed 'chovies to swim naturally when hooked thru the nose.

Living down here, I do miss fishing for albies at the Cross or the Mushroom Bank. Great memories.

Opps...must be another look-a-like in Mulege, Bob. That brunette is wife #1, a Debby, who is indeed a very sweet "10". I never did call her "T"?...but I may be wrong, as I am so often in matters concerning the fairer sex.

And...this co-pilot catches fish..Pompano AND this nice 28lb cabrilla near Sta. Inez islands.

Caught on a No. 9 metal-lipped Rapala bought from SQC tackle store..downtown San Diego near India St...a long time ago.

i rarely buy much in brick/mortar stores. cheaper on line, and no sales taxes. only shop brick/mortar stores to try on clothing for size (then buy online), or daily/weekly needs like groceries, or bulky items like construction supplies or furniture.

You aren't helping your neighbors with your shopping online. Sometimes it's better to support the local economy even if it costs a bit more, and when you say that you try on clothes to find the correct size to order online you are just being cheap.
