okay, really? a 'few' of you actually stuck your cards into an ATM machine after one of you didn't get any money back?
one...dumb and dumber
two...haven't had such a problem in Loreto in six years
three...haven't heard any boaters 'warning you all'
four...call your home bank, they know whether or not the money was actually dispensed

Don't know why people are so quick to assume rip off instead of machine malfunction which can and does happen anywhere...not just Mexico.

Don't know which Bancomer branch that they are accusing, but I've used one or the other for 10 years with no problem...however, a friend did have a malfunction experience, went in the bank and was told the process for getting her account credited. You need to call or email the bank that issued the atm card, give them the details, they will contact the bank that has the malfunctioning machine, and your account will be credited within a few hours. It worked for her.

Can't help myself...but someone should tell the complainer that she was in Loreto...not Loredo...or Laredo! Did these people even go into the bank to report the problem?

my mom went to her bank in san diego and the machine ate her card - just simply ate it. when she went in to complain, they told her the machine had shredded it.well ... it is her Braziilian card ie not easily replaceable and she was madder than a hatter ... then they recanted, went in and got her card and apologized ... there was a guy inside doing maintenance and she happened to use the machine at the wrong second.

point being - stuff happens everywhere.

now: these folks may have been in Loreto over the weekend when the banks are closed. and if you are on your way somewhere else, then for sure you have a problem cause you can't go into the bank.

It is the first time we have heard of anyone being "ripped off", if it is indeed true.

ATM

Live in Loreto, used all the local ATMs at one time or another since the first one went in, both US and Mexican accounts/cards, little glitchy kinds of stuff a few times, only "ripoff" in my experience has been the fees piled upon fees on the US end.

Ate The Card

A number of US based banks have ATMs that only require you to swipe your card to activate it. My Mexican experience is that most ATMs there swallow the card until the transaction is finished.

No matter where I am, I really prefer the swipe over the swallow.

That said, a couple of years ago, we were in Cabo with a friend that was a first timer. She went to a Bancomer ATM near a restaurant we were heading to in order to get some cash.

Long story, short. She's a Chase customer in the US, and the Chase ATMs are all swipe. The Bancomer ATM was a swallower. She left her card and went to dinner.

Next day, she couldn't locate her card. I figured she had left it and drove back into town where the bank was holding it.

I have been ripped off by ATMs located apart from bank locations. Never again. I will not use an ATM that is not on the grounds of an actual bank location.

The Banamex in San Felipe defaulted to $4000P without giving me the option to choose my amount of withdrawal. Fortunately, it was the first day of the trip.

The La Paz Bancomer gave me the option and processed it without drama.

One rider could not withdraw from the Banamex in old town Loreto but was able to exchange Travelers Checks.

On the second day of my trip to Peru last July, the bank ATM swallowed my VISA card without any warning. I went in and insisted that I would report the card stolen if they did not return it. It took an hour but they finally opened the machine and returned the card. Of course, they told me it had been shredded as part of their excuses. This was in the Mira Flores district of Lima, don't remember the banks name.

My take on these issues:
Tell your bank/card issuer you are out of the country, they want specific dates.
Use ATM's during the day when the bank is open.
If possible, look for machines that do not take possession of your card.
Do not accept that the card is shredded unless they can prove it.
Use the local authorities to reinforce your resolve.
