Scorpion bay on news now

EnsenadaDr - 3-15-2012 at 06:45 PM

Scorpion Bay...looks like a Lakeside California news site.

Ateo - 3-15-2012 at 06:47 PM

Too bad I ditched cable 6 months ago.

One guy leased the land from the Ejido, another guy "bought" the land from the Ejido.

Sound familiar?

Destined to be ruined someday. I'm glad I had some good times there. I hope my two boys can ride that wave sometime. It will be either mighty crowded, or closed off to the 99%er's

Many fond memories here. First surfed it from a boat in the '70's - didn't know what it was until we got back. They called in Rattlers back then. Took my kids decades later and they all learned to surf there. It ruined my son - NSSA judges thought he was "too smooth" and not "exciting enough"! Sigh. Did well enough to finish in the top ten. How many of you remember Jamie living in the trailer with his wife and daughter between 3rd and 2nd? No showers then - only a wind screen! Chino could fix anything. He was an airplane mechanic in a past life - was even president of the Ejido in Constitucion. Ice use to be a problem - but we would get spools (huge) of nylon twine from PacBell and get tons of school supplies and lots of sheets and blankets and trade them for ice and fish, bugs and abs. The rest of the campers were soo jealous! "No ice for you - need it for the fish". The Wind'n crew - what can you say? Shawn and his red beechcraft buzzing the point. Bambi's is OK, but its when you connect outside 3rd and go past the rock at 1st is when its epic! Not to mention kamikaze go outs at 6th and 7th - big, walled and beefy. Rivermouth to the north was great for lefts and you could always find a hole with lots of sculpin - yes, sculpin and butts!! Then the families came, and the little tienda with ice, and then another, and a restaurant, and another, and a corporate retreat, and ATV's racing on the beach and in the dunes. Remember San Juanico Days? One year the circus brought real lions! They were really skinny and looked awful, but they were real! Now there's houses, and then they'll be more houses, and then paved roads, and then the winds won't carry the sand out into the bay anymore, and the perfectly groomed waves will disappear forever. It's happened before - Cape St. Francis. Haven't been back in awhile - probably won't go back - unless I have a million or so to throw away - then maybe.........

KCET LA runs it a couple times a day at 4, 6:30 and 11pm and the station is carried in Bakersfield on cable and they have a Low Power transmitter.

good wave but they can have it.

paranewbi - 3-16-2012 at 07:29 AM

I'm with you Woody..
Let em develope, build, circus, new taco stand, whatever. They liked it so much they made it the way they want it to be...wouldn't do it unless they liked it. That's how I view most anything people complain about and then carry on doing. Debt, work, possessions, bills, must like it or they wouldn't be doing it.

I spent the 60's thru the 90's surfing places in Mex and Central Am. with a buddy or two and am glad I had the chance when no one else did. A few places like Pipes, Del Mar and all between at one point had no one out for days on end...even found it hard to find someone to surf with back then at those breaks in San Diego! Grew up at my parents house on Kesling st. with my backyard being the Sunset Cliffs canyons, epic days alone.

All pretty much gone now.
Still there are those mornings when schools in session, people are working to pay bills and all. Then it's just a few old guys and a beach within walking distance from the home. Glad I had my time...they can have theirs.

Look at the bright side. You can now show up with a girl, yes a girl, on a spur of the moment trip ( 6 hours door to door from TS ;D ) stay in a furnished house, surf until you drop, have a shower , eat or cook nice, fresh food, and the girl and boy will both have ear to ear smiles. Repeat for 3 days or until swell goes flat. Leave.
If it is out of your control why fret?
Plus when its pumping the current is a conveyor belt and you get all the waves you ever wanted.

I have a buddy that surfed it in about '72 or 73 way before these local clowns showed up, he now lives at 6th point away from the commotion. Great set of points with amazing waves, but I've surfed the Ranch in the 60's, Coho Point and Mar Meta reef on SC Island from my boat with no one out, so I don't need to drive anywhere.

Exactly. It's a different experience of Baja surf trips, but it's still Baja. I've been more exhausted surfing s bay than anywhere else due to walk backs and current pushing. I've met some great friends down there too. I'm tired of the "throw away" scorpion bay mentality on nomad. It's just another place. Chill. Surf it, have a good time.......last time I stayed at the motel in town and still had a great time.

Ateo - 3-16-2012 at 07:29 PM

It is the best wave in Baja when properly functioning with a south/southwest swell. That's it.

Paulina - 3-16-2012 at 08:13 PM

Sculpin,

Thank you for sharing your story. I could feel it.

Ateo, and every other Brother:

welcome to the club! my first try was in 90 and Steve Lis and Scat were the big dogs on 3rd point! Juanico Daze were just getting a grip.

too many days since my Point Loma Brethren have jockeyed with the wind-an crew.

it is the best wave we can find if you only expect to spend $200 each for fuel, sleep in the dirt, get your stuff riffled thru while surfing/fishing, and if YOU ARE LUCKY, a next-gen-wanna-be-pro-surfer will look you in the eye while he drops in and bumps your rail on the wave of your life.... don't be a hater!

we all know i'm full of it, right?

BajaBlanca - 3-17-2012 at 09:07 AM

Les's son says he rode the longest wave of his life at Scorpion ...still talks about it today .... beautiful town .... only beent here once myself (and I don't surf) but it was thorougly enjoyable.
