Bug - 3-18-2012 at 05:05 PM

Yep.. Coco been staying at my house for the last 11 days.. We had a great time with him. Stop by and see him, he has some wonderful stories to share about his vacation with us..

instant coffee
And don't for get the orange sugar free metamucil

He got 14 sheet of metal 20 feet long to put on then roof of his wood building. He needs some help putting it on the roof of the building. He has the nails and screws already, just needs some men to stop by and give him a good day of work.. Take a latter with you...or use your truck..

If I think of any thing else I will post it... And if he ask how you know all this, just tell him gloria told you.. My name not gloria, but he called me gloria the whole 11 days. LOL

David K - 3-18-2012 at 05:29 PM

That is great info Bug!

How did it come to be that you had him as a guest?

Bug - 3-18-2012 at 05:38 PM

I stay at his ranch a lot. For I quad from San Felipe and try to find all these great places you post on this web site and your own web site. David K. Been camping there for some years. He said the last time I was there he was coming to the 250 race and going to stay at KiKi camp ground in San Felipe and sleep in his truck. I said come and stay with me. Left my telephone number and he called, found him at rice and beans eatting dinner. So I said come to my home and stay with us. And we went out on my sandrail to a great spot to watch the race. Then took him out another day out with my friends on a jeep run out in the desert, he went to a few dinner partys, went out one night with the guys, about 25 guys who knew him had dinner. And the list can go on and on. He had a great time and said he going to come and stay with us again.. We had the best time, I already miss him. So Tuesday when I am going to the caves going to stop and see him again. If you ever get the chance to have him stay at your home, you must take it.. Memory are wonderful.

Coco told me at the SF250 race he want pinto beans, a big bag.

goldhuntress - 3-18-2012 at 06:33 PM

That made my day Bug. He is the sweetest guy, good to know he's enjoying life. Thanks for sharing your story.

Bug - 3-18-2012 at 07:24 PM

TW.. I was sharing what I seen him like to eat at my home while he was here. Please take him the beans. For life is different when you live out where he lives.

We also looked for those knee pads for him. I found them on the web site. They are called bucket boss, they are the flat tan leather ones with the cream color felt inside. They are the old concrete knee pads.. If anyone has any please take them to him. For I went to home depot in El Centro they did not having any..

Thanks very much for both sharing your home with Coco and for telling us about it!

TMW - 3-19-2012 at 02:06 PM

I'll see him the end of April and I ordered a pair of the knee pads for him.

BajaWarrior - 3-19-2012 at 03:09 PM

I just happen to have 42 waist shorts, and XXL shirts that were my Dad's who passed away January 21st this year. Since we will be down for Easter we will take the drive south from our place below San Felipe and deliver this clothing. If anyone has anything else we will happily take it to Coco as well.

We leave San Diego on Friday March 30th and will be at our place for 9 days.

Wow, what a great story! Thanks so much, yes!!!

guaranteed he'd get a kick out of a nice warm pair of socks!

End of April

John M - 3-20-2012 at 01:18 PM

We will be in that area also at the end of April spectating the NORRA race.

we'll pick up stuff from the list also.....

John & Barb

DavidE - 3-20-2012 at 04:22 PM

Another nice thing is a copy of WHERE THERE IS NO DOCTOR en espanol. He, like me, isn't getting any younger and a copy of this book may end up getting him out of a jam.

wilderone - 3-20-2012 at 06:01 PM

Thanks so much for the post about what Coco would enjoy, bug. I always thought coco was diabetic though - is this not true? So I then thought to not give things to him with too much sugar. Wrong? I'm printing out the list for safekeeping, and will definitely bring him the stuff he likes. When I was there a couple weeks ago, in the hour that I was there, I think he had 8 visitors. He sure makes the world go around in his "Corner".

pointdog - 3-20-2012 at 08:44 PM

For a newbie here that is familiar with the Pacific side of the peninsula but not the gulf, where is Coco's Corner?

brewer - 3-20-2012 at 11:10 PM

Hwy 5 down to Laguna Chapala. You'll see it on the map taking that route. That's the way I go now to avoid the chaos of northern HWY 1.

13 miles from Laguna Chapala on the road to Gonzaga Bay and San Felipe.

The highlighter line is the EL CAMINO REAL route from Loreto to San Francisco, CA 1767 to 1849+

Yah, I think once Hwy. 5 is all paved, a lot of us will go that way to avoid Tijuana, Ensenada and the San Quintin valley traffic.

Just looking at the Almanac. Thanks for the directions. Are they working on Hwy. 5? The vision of bypassing all of the route you describe above is very desiriable for my many full up and backs on Hwy 1.

Yes, they have been working on Hwy. 5 south from San Felipe for 20 years... had to pave the first 50 miles to Puertecitos twice! The first time (1990+) the contractor used so little asphalt that pot holes formed right away and by 1999 it was a torn up mess. He also did not level out the steep vados of the graded roadbed the pavement went on. So, today you need to drive the first 50 miles slower than normal becase of those steep dips.

By 2007, the the highway to Puertecitos was all repaved and they began the next section to Gonzaga Bay (45 miles from Puertecitos... then 35 more miles to Hwy. 1 at Laguna Chapala).

The rate of pavement south from Puertecitos has been 10 kms. (6 miles) a year... This newest section is being built to Mexico's new highway standard... ie. wide road with big shoulders that can double as bike lanes... and good for high speed driving (no steep dips).

See the trip reports forum and the road conditions forum here at Nomad for photos of the new road. It is a beautiful drive with the Enchanted Islands just offshore. A visit with Coco (and Alfonsina's for a meal) is well worth the drive, even with it not paved yet.

Okay, here are some Hwy. 5 pictures taken in July, 2010... pavement was just past El Huerfanito (20 miles from Puertecitos).

First, typical highway just north of Puertecitos:

Now, new style highway just south of Puertecitos:

The older dirt road on the left (regraded for highway construction access) and the new highway... The 20 miles south of Puertecitos is over volcanic ridges and was once the worse road in Baja... very steep, 4WD needed, rocky and slow (5 hours to drive 20 miles)! It was graded in 1986 and for the first time allowed easy 2WD traffic. By 2006, it hadn't been regraded and storms and Baja 1000 traffic had tore it up, and once again wasn't recommended for passenger cars.

El Huerfanito (The Little Orphan) just offshore... the other Enchanted Islands are in the distance...

El Muerto, The Dead Man, and others:

Anyway... once pavement reaches Highway One, I fear the charm will be gone... alas, you can't stop 'progress', right?

mcfez - 3-21-2012 at 02:36 PM

We'll be there in a few days...will take him 20lb bag of rice, coffee and fresh fruit.

And give us an idea of how work is progressing on the pavement south. Maybe GPS coords where it currently ends.

We really ought to have a contest on Nomads, predicting the date the first cars are allowed all the way to Hwy 1 on pavement. We'll call it the Llanta Dorada or something.

Was there 3 weeks ago. The pavement ends just north of Campo Delfines. No signs of any work or equipment.

LaPazGringo - 3-22-2012 at 12:13 PM

So delighted to hear that Coco is enjoying himself! I don't know anyone like that guy.

BajaRob - 3-25-2012 at 08:11 AM

Just spent some time with Coco on our way back from Loreto Wednesday. We shared bloody marys and left him 5 gallons of drinking water. He was in good spirits and only complaint was that the reverse in his truck didn't work. He had a good time in SF.

Something tells me that's doing little to dampen his fun.

Sprocket - 3-25-2012 at 09:51 PM

Our kids made a box up for Coco. New towels, shampoo, toothpaste etc. and I brought a new battery. A week before the SF250. Coco was very happy and there was 10 people including a really cool guy in a offroad wheelchair.

Those are cute little guys! Allot of kids would do well to meet someone like Coco who can get so much satisfaction from having so little.

TMW - 3-27-2012 at 07:54 PM

Sprocket that was so good of you, thanks for sharing. I know Coco loved it.

Coco from 1997

John M - 3-28-2012 at 03:31 PM

Going through older photos today we found this

Dated October 1997

John and Barbara M with Coco - we don't recall exactly the story of the kids in the photo but Barb thinks they were the children of a woman living at Coco's at the time.

David K - 3-28-2012 at 06:49 PM

Great photo John! You still have the one of Barbara giving Coco a hair cut?
I think I have it saved in my Dec. 2001- Jan. 2002 trip page...
