Fruit and veggies at Baja Sur State Line?

generubin - 3-18-2012 at 09:31 PM

These days, when crossing the Baja Norte/Baja Sur state line, does anyone have to give up and fruits or veggies?

Thanks in advance...

I don't have a definitive answer for you. I have always just assumed they didn't want fruit and veggies crossing the stateline as in the US so I have always just driven right past all of those great fruit stands in San Quintin. Of course if you cross after about 4 pm or so the Ag Insp. sta is closed so it wouldn't be a problem.

The last several times through they have not asked or looked for fruits, veggies, meats, etc... They do however always collect the pesos for the bug spray er water spray for the undercarriage of the car

Going from Norte to Sur this winter they took our fruit. Sur to Norte they didn't even stop us.

If your so inclined....the payment of 10 pesos is not required for the bug spray.
It is a "donation" and not paying it will not impede your southbound journey.

As the Ag inspector fellow approaches your vehicle, just tell him "lo siento no fruitas".
No search, no intensive interrogation....

Going from North to South, they can and will check.

bkbend - 3-19-2012 at 11:39 AM

Going south last week they asked and I said no fruits or veggies and he looked in the cooler and food box anyway ( actually had none). When I was headed north the next day I noticed they were inspecting the southbound vehicle. I have been through when they take my word for it, not sure what prompts the checks. Maybe depends on who's working that day and what was on the wife's grocery list.

Kinda appears that way. Two weeks ago, we were asked about fruits and vegetables. I answered in the negative, but the guy still opened the back of our vehicle to look around.

Time before, no questions. Just the spray.

Gene,
On a recent trip a Gott 140 Cooler filled with good steaks and tri tips and other homegrown beef was escorted around the checkpoint by some friends.
They told me they took the airport turnoff road which breaks to the right about 1 km north of the Sanitaria guys (you see a little airplane on a tiny sign).
A little further on, a dirt road on the left takes you into Guerrero Negro the back way. :saint:
When you leave town after you gas up, you will be south of the gentlemen who want your beef and lemons. And parmesan cheese.

Chicken and Pork are allowed to go south, but no beef or veggies. Seems strange, doesn't it?

This route is known to the locals, mostly. Discussing it here is counter productive to those gringoes using the route to transport known items forbidden at the agricultural checkpoint. Draw attention to it and have the military set up another checkpoint for gringoes.

Why not discuss it off the forum or U2U?

rts551 - 3-19-2012 at 07:51 PM

Hey what happened to Davidk's post? thee one complaining about people yelling at him in U2U's for spilling the beans about this secret route.

KurtG - 3-19-2012 at 07:54 PM

About two hours ago southbound we were asked about fruit but the car was not checked.

It is an agricultural (and immigration) inspection point at a State border just like the one between Arizona and California. There are multiple route between those states as well. why not focus attention on them?

The checkpoint you are talking about is an agricultural checkpoint between 2 States. BC and BCS. Just like between Az and Ca.

get it now?

David K - 3-19-2012 at 08:07 PM

No, sorry I don't... This is a Baja forum.. so why would I talk about roads into California from Arizona...??? Staying on topic: there are many dirt roads that cross into Baja Sur, and if anyone wants to detour off Mexico #1, they can... I guess Lee thinks that talking about it on Nomad is going to have the military set up checks on the other roads... and I was just commenting about the military's role and don't think there needs to be a concern about it. That's all.

what a turd..... pointless at this point as our hero can't see past his own nose.

Splitting hairs is fine but does it matter who sets up a new roadblock? The military hangs at the airport and a logical checkpoint there wouldn't be out of the way. Always pass the military patrolling the sand dune road, as well.

What I'm addressing is dialogue bordering on bragging about bringing in food often confiscated by the ag's -- something that the military, in cohoots with the ag's -- might see as a benefit.

Maybe discussion on the ''best'' places to hide beef in a vehicle would be?

David K - 3-20-2012 at 09:34 AM

No worries Lee... If you ever do have a military check point take food from you (that you didn't offer)... let us know. Maybe?

I don't cross into Baja Sur is often as you, so I depend on facts being reported here to keep Baja Nomad the best source of news on the peninsula!

Thank you!

rts551 - 3-20-2012 at 09:49 AM

Fact is, its amazing that some people would advertize and promote the breaking of the law, Even if they don't agree with said law. And since it was said on Nomad, it must be a fact:lol::lol:

inspection's

For what it's worth at this point. We have been asked about fruits & vegetables every time we cross the steate line headed south and they have never looked after we said we had none.
