I also used to eat turtle back int the early 80s in La Paz. The article is correct that there is still a huge undergraound market for it there. I stopped eating it before the endangered nature of sea turtles became apparent when a friend of mine told me that he had seen them killed and that they shriek just like human screams when they are disembowelled alive. It turns my stomach to this day to think about that.

My children and I were also fortunate to meet a 100 to 200 pound sea turtle who turned up on Tecolote beach outside of La Paz one day a couple of years ago. I felt so lucky that we were alone on the beach that day and there was no one there to bother the animal. It flailed around on the beach for about a half an hour and then disappeared into the water again. Beat the heck out of the best day at the zoo.- Stephanie
