Life is So Very Fragile and Precious

Gypsy Jan - 3-24-2012 at 04:02 PM

I wasn't going to post about this, but it is Baja related and the current discussion about Whitney Houston's death has me thinking about life and random chance.

A local man was a member of a crew working on a project near our home. I saw him every morning, but didn't know him or his name, but he was friendly and always acknowledged me, smiling, and nodding, and I waved hello to him on my ins and outs.

Two days ago, he was working on a project at La Salina and had a massive heart attack and died on the spot, even though his co-workers applied CPR.

His friends tell me he was a good man, a good husband and father with no drug or alcohol problems.

He was 40-years-old and leaves a wife and four children behind.

My sincere regrets, Gypsy Jan...even though probably none of us knew him..the death of any man diminishes us all to some degree. If that sounds familiar, it is!

Don't recall where I got this quote. Maybe even here. I thought it quite inspirational.

"Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your
one wild and precious life?“
~ American poet Mary Oliver
From "The summer day"; New and Selected Poems 1992

There was a dentist working at a clinic that I frequent once a week. During the months of August and September of last year, the heat was stifling during the night when I did my overnight shift. I borrowed a fan from the Dentist's office, and the security guard said I needed to ask him first to use it any further. Everytime I was there he came in, with a smile, in the early morning hours, and spoke English with me and said I could use his fan. He was a very nice person. A few months ago, I met a new dentist. The boss told me he was replacing the other dentist. I asked where he went. He said he had a massive heart attack and died. I suddenly felt so sad, he was one of the only cheery workers that would always have a smile and a kind word. I see his picture on the wall at the clinic, and still feel bad.

Fair to say..

EnsenadaDr - 3-24-2012 at 05:51 PM

I think it fair to say some deaths affect us more than others...

And another sad story....

I used to frequent the clubs in TJ, (where I live) and I met a door guy calling in men to go inside his club. The man was a deportee of the US and spoke very good English so we had many conversations. He would update me on the progress of his application process to hire on the TJ police department as an officer. He was doing some volunteer work for them as an auxiliary cop. Having a police background myself, he enjoyed picking my brain and updating me. I saw him to be a hard nosed guy but I thought it might be because of his large strong stature and I thought he might make the grade.

But recently I was in the club area a learned he started working in the busiest and largest club in the zone which has a public entrance on a busy alley and another public entrance on the street. I have seen several people gather on the alley side who appear to wait for a person who supplies them with drugs to deal. When given the drugs, the dealers quickly scatter in various directions. Well, I heard my acquaintance was working about 4am as a waiter in the club when he stopped a few of these scattering dealers who would shoot thru the club from the alley to the street side. He told them to not use the club to scatter. One of the dealers, returned a short time later with a gun and killed my acquaintance with a shot to the abdomen. Maybe he was a little too hard nosed while only working as a waiter.

la bocana/punnta abreojos recently had such a sad loss too ... our local mechanic's 14 year old daughter died, massive heart ttack out of the blue. Her twin sister, who had been diagnosed with a faulty heart is fine - the twin sister with the supposedly "good" heart passed away.

In the last couple years I have had so many friends my age and younger die - kinda scary and yeah...live the life you want to the fullest is a good motto.

My grandpa lived to be quite old and his biggest complaint was that he had outlived every single friend he had. I can certainly relate more now than I could when he said this ...

We're all related here in this ol' world and we all have an influence and make a difference to one another, however indirect.

It is sad when anybody dies particularly as it affects the deceased family. But, die we must.
I hope to adopt the philosophy of "live each day as if it is your last" but the bills keep mounting and obligations continue:O

In general I am impressed with Doctors either in Mexico or the USA. I depend on them for advice.
