Establishing residency in South Dakota

dtbushpilot - 3-28-2012 at 05:58 PM

We want to establish residency in a state that has more favorable tax rates than California and be able to take care of our vehicle registration etc. via Internet. We all know about the SD vehicle registration advantage but I want to get a drivers license there and be able to show residency. I think SD would be a good fit as there is no state income tax there.

Does anybody have any experience, advice or know a facilitator that might be able to help?

DT, what exactly is wrong with CA?

just kidding! i don't think there is enough space to form a concise response.....

Dougherty's are an Insurance agency- I'm confused how they could help residency? We used to get good car insurance rates from them though.

Don't know why you'd need a facilitator. We established our domicile address here your best address ($10 per month and mail forwarding service) and flew to Sioux Falls. Got our driver's licenses the next day and flew out the following day.

Larry at Your Best Address can handle your initial vehicle registrations if you want, or you can go to the DMV while in Sioux Falls. All your subsequent car regs can be done online after that

I use a South Dakota company named PayTrust for many years. You get a a PO Box Address and a Sioux Falls physical street Address where they handle, scan, code, forward some, and pay all incoming bills and mail. Cost $9.95 per month with first 25 transactions free per month (including snail mail checks). Why pay $10 for mail forwarding alone? Save a nickel and get a lot!

Just another option.

Woooosh, you mentioned PayTrust will forward your mail also? I couldn't find that info on their website? Was PayTrust your only US address when you used their service- Did they receive your new credit and debit cards and forward them to you, along with stuff like birthday cards from the dentist:rolleyes: or IRS correspondence etc ?

The only snafu I come across are medical bills since almost all providers send paper bills and the bills can straggle in months after the service. For medical bills it would be nice to have a scan and email service so I'd know when something shows up in our box but thankfully we wouldn't need it very often currently. Thanks for the info. Always good to know.

I looked into SD residency last year. I am currently an Arizona resident per all the USA stuff. one kicker I found: I am young enough still to want to maintain some health insurance in the states. My AZ BCBS high deductible HSA account costs me over 300/month. ouch enough. but transferring it to SD would have added another 200+/month to the premium. and I could not find a cost effective policy from another company. my guess is that maybe the small pool of residents in SD make for higher self-insured costs? not a deal breaker for some paying high taxes elsewhere, but for now, my AZ income tax and property tax aren't too bad. with all the other inconvenience issues, like a trip to SD, etc I decided to stay an ex-pat with 'feet' in AZ.

The price of heating oil in South Dakota will be about tripple the difference in tax between Taxafornia and there.

I used to hunt geese in North and South Dakota...until my wife, The Boss, made me stop. Starting about October 1 you pretty much had to dig a hole somewhere and start a fire to keep from freezing to death.

Also..there ain't no beaches in SD...some mud holes maybe. They also talk funny.

All the more reason not to actually go there. When I moved to Northern New Mexico 35 years ago from San Diego I figured I would get used to the snow, ice and frozen mud in time but after working outside in it for most of my career I hadn't. I always hated being cold, I could tolerate the heat but cold doesn't do it for me. I'd make a better lizzard than penguin.......dt

So, what part time Mexico ex-pat would ever be there when heating oil was needed?
