Does anyone know about a book called ----" a wild ride "
or " my wild ride " -- or something like that?
(I had overheard only part of a conversation.... and I think it is about Mulege'/Baja))
I always wonder why the hotel's owner and builder (per Erle Stanley Gardner, with photos) is not mentioned in the bits on the hotel's history... Dixon
Collins?capt. mike - 4-4-2012 at 10:53 AM

Like that he built the place? capt. mike - 4-4-2012 at 01:31 PM
well - i do think he was very much involved with Mulege Aero Club for sure, and he also was integral to the 1st Chivato hotel.
to what extent he finished or owned them i just don't know.
i think the book is clear that he had to get out of dodge once or twice!gallesram - 4-4-2012 at 02:05 PM
It's a great read, even if he stretched the truth a few times. I actually thought about his book when reading the thread about Mark & Olivia;
seems that land title disputes are a way of life down there and have been for a long time!David K - 4-4-2012 at 03:16 PM
Yah no kidding... it is Mexico, afterall...
Have you guys seent the Howard Hughes' Movie with Robert Mitchum, Jane Russell, Vincent Price... about the fly-in resort in Baja (shown on the movie's
map as being in Loreto region)? 'His Kind of Girl' (Your kind of movie!)... It's a kick (Stickers first posted about in in 2010)!

I have it on CD. I think Vincent price stole that movie. Another old favorite of mine in the cast was Tim Holt.David K - 4-4-2012 at 04:48 PM

Couldn`t find it on Mexican netflix, but Amazon has download rental for 2.99
Hey ! thanks folks! Turns out that a copy turned up in Mulege, from someone who is living within sight of the Old Hotel Mulege! Good read, but like
someone else said, a bit far fetched....One of the Ejido Jefe's stopped by the other day, the Hotel is for sale, I offered a hundred bucks for it, got
rejected....We reminisced about it a bit...I went to a very elegant wedding there about 27 years ago...John and Mena still are neighbors....Mula - 4-5-2012 at 06:33 AM
Amazon sellers want a fortune for a used copy of the book.
I contacted Barbara and she informed me that they are in the process of getting another printing done and will let me know when it's out.mcfez - 4-5-2012 at 07:47 AM
Sounds like a great book.....but I'll wait for a bit! Mula...please post here when the new prints come out.
I found 4 pages with photos or text mentioning Dixon Collins as the owner/ builder of the hotel at Punta Chivato, in Erle Stanley Gardner's 1967 'Off
the Beaten Track in Baja' which mainly illustrates Gardner's Feb. 1966 expedition.

I think that other movie with Mitchem filmed in 50s Puerto Vallarta is better, much more real local scenery. Great chase scenes in old post war cars.
Mr. Collins began his building career in the hospitality industry in 1965 when he designed, constructed, owned and operated, the Punta Chivato
Hotel, a 90 suite luxury hotel, spa and fishing resort in Baja California, Mexico.
Subsequent projects included development of hydroelectric projects in Oregon and Pakistan, and the expansion of Two Bunch Palms in Desert Hot Springs,
CA with planning for a convention center, day spa, hotel and condominiums. Two Bunch Palms enjoys an excellent reputation as a haven for celebrities,
screen-writers and novelists.
In 1987 to 1996 Collins owned and operated the Skylonda Retreat in Woodside, CA whose innovative programs gained international recognition and created
significant changes throughout the spa industry. During this period Collins served as a Board member of the International Spa Association serving as
Chair of the Marketing Committee, and as a member of both the Strategic Planning and Benefits Committees.
As a result of these, and many other projects, Mr. Collins' expertise in both the hotel/spa and tourism/hospitality industry has been sought out by
both Hotel and Destination Spa developers over the past several years.
In 1999 Collins founded Collins Development Co, a consulting and construction firm that contracts to build custom and spec homes at the Saddle Creek
Development in Calaveras County, CA. Collins Development Co provides "turn key" services including; feasibility, financing, design, engineering,
construction, and sales of single family homes.
