While fishing a few day's back, I landed a barracuda; got him lifted into the boat and reached for the long-nosed pliers; only to rather quickly
observe that he wasn't in the mood to be shaken off the treble hook and into the fish well. He ziged when I zaged and I got one of the second hook
points drilled into my index finger. With two of us hooked, it was a race to see who get got off quicker; lucky for me, Mulege’ Mac Gyver, (aka W.
Airstream), took control of the pliers and worked the fish into the well leaving me with the hook firmly inserted into my index finger.
Next step; what do we have to get that hook out? Pliers, pocket knife, a few Pacificos and not much else. “Plenty”, says MacGyver, so he takes my
pocket knife and proceeds to open the puncture wound to extricate the hook.
Well, it wasn’t that easy; and since both of us can’t see all that great; and since the red stuff was clouding the scene; it was touch and go as I was
wanting to put pressure on the open cut while MacGyver was still wanting to cut along the hook shank to open the wound. He won; I sat down and
looked the other way. He yanked; out came the hook. Then it was to handle the wound with no first aid supplies. So I put on a cotton glove – not
exactly the most sterile – and used a zip-tie to keep pressure on the wound. Thanks to Mulege’ Macgyver, I should be able to use that finger again in
a few – days, weeks, well, we’ll see.
Question: where do I get a marine grade first aid kit that includes suture material, cutting device, serious disinfectant, and other stuff one might
need in case I get into an instant replay mode?woody with a view - 4-7-2012 at 10:02 AM
tooth floss works in a pinch.
just get some triple antibiotic ointment, some gauze pads and a roll of duct tape. you can figure out what to do with it until you get to the doctor.Russ - 4-7-2012 at 10:09 AM
Cutting the hook out is Not a good idea! Infection and long healing time on the larger wound.
This is simple and it works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKAAGWZskGgrts551 - 4-7-2012 at 10:12 AM

Have heard that it's best to push the hook thru, remove the barb and back it out. Never had to try it. Thank goodness.willyAirstream - 4-7-2012 at 10:41 AM
Actually, PlanB is still in shock and not recalling the events correctly. Plan B offered the knife to cut it, but when I told him I couldn't see and
my hands were too shaky, he suddenly and violently reared back, snatching his finger away at mach speed from the dull blade and out came the hook.
Credit the extraction to pure fear! Back on shore, John D demonstrated a hook
extraction method - hold down the eye end of the hook and when the patient isn't looking yank out the hook with a piece of line looked over the hook.
He also eliminated future mishaps by giving PlanB a jig with a single hook J.P. - 4-7-2012 at 10:45 AM
NOT FUNNY
We were in Galveston Bay fishing and my friend sat down on a treble hook he bent over the seat and I performed Surgery on his lower end.
He was more upset about ruining his coveralls than having the hook extracted.Cypress - 4-7-2012 at 12:28 PM
A day to remember! And you'll have the scar to remind you. Only one fish? A barracuda. Most of those Sea of Cortez 'cudas are little dinks. Be
thankful it wasn't one of those Gulf of Mexico 25 lbs. + brutes. He'd ripped your finger off. Hope your finger heals without any problems.Gaucho - 4-7-2012 at 02:25 PM

Man, the guy who removed that hook was a surgeon! He's obviously done that before.Udo - 4-7-2012 at 03:26 PM
That's a lott-a-trouble for just a barracuda, y'all, isn't it?willyAirstream - 4-7-2012 at 05:33 PM
Well, yes, we were not keeping the cudas, but throwing him back with out the hook removed would have meant throwing Capt. Plan B into the water too!
Very succeaaful day, no YT, but plenty of Pinto and Trigger. paranewbi - 4-8-2012 at 04:52 AM
Marry a nurse...brings home pockets full of stuff (oops!) that would kill the pain if she has to remove an organ on the road!
Best traveling medical kit I ever had!
and she loves to fish!tripledigitken - 4-8-2012 at 05:07 AM

West Marine has a wide selection marine oriented first aid kits. I got mine there. You can order off the internet, or when passing through San Diego
they have a couple of brick and mortar outlets.
http://www.aafp.org/afp/2001/0601/p2231.html
Print this out, cover in plastic and keep on boat. Also, I keep a quart bottle of bleach on boat for cleaning fish box etc and great for pouring over
small wounds. Put a magnifying glass in your first aid kit - we're all getting older. Cabela has the kit here.
Keep a small bolt cutter on board - I got mine at Harbor Freight for $10 and have used it to cut the hook free from the X-Rap and the flopping
yellowtail.David K - 4-8-2012 at 07:54 AM

Have had a few hooks in me at sea. Offshore fishing out of San Diego few years back had a salas jig go up my thumb. We had sharpened the hooks real
well before leaving and the hook went in near the bottom of my thumb to the joint. A Vet friend was aboard and once and awhile would talk about past
experiences so I figured he would be the best to try and cut it out. He made about a 1 inch cut to get it out and I think it bothered him more than
me. Afterwards he got real drunk and complained how he did not like to cut a friend. I thanked him over and over!
In this case we poured Jack Daniels over the incision, took a piece of t-shirt wrapped around the thumb carefully to keep the cut together, then wrap
with duct tape or electical tape would work well also. Afterwards went on to catch five nice yellows off the Coronados. Thumb healed up nice.motoged - 4-8-2012 at 12:38 PM
It ain't pretty, but I have used a rubber band to staunch the bleeding to zero, dab the wound dry after sousing with hard booze YIPES! then SUPER GLUE
into the cut. Close it up. KEFLEX antibiotic 500mg / 8 hrs which is the best there is for deep wounds and even toothaches.
Of course get to a clinic ASAP.willardguy - 4-8-2012 at 01:51 PM

HOLA, I have ran charters from alaska to costa rica with hawaii tossed in..I have a couple rules on deck that are not bendable on my vessel's under
my command: 1,no loose hook's on deck EVER !! 2, with greeni's keep my self between the end of the rod tru to the hook/fish 3,alway's remember what
it feel's like to pull a hook out of yourself,,it's can be a very dangerous and the sh-t hit's the fan FAST ! so get a rythem down and stick to it and
never change your system and dont yell at the angler,,but have them follow your lead (command) I have found the trick to pulling out hook's is to do
everything/anything to keep from getting hooked in the first place (duh) so far none of my guest's and my dog's have been hooked !! me,,2 twice now
and never again..that F-ing HURT'S KI&T
