Brooding

This female verdin is brooding her clutch in a bougainvilla. She is not at all disturbed by my presence, some 3 feet below her. She is probably one of a long line of generations fledged here in this yard.

These surfbirds, on the other hand, are skittish in the extreme. They fly away the instant they hear or see anything they don't feel comfortable around. This flock of about 30 vanished in a flash when I dislodged a couple of peso-sized pebbles from the clifftop perch where I had crept for the photos. I was at least 20 yards away and pretty high above them, but they didn't wait to see if I was going to come closer or not.
