Wow.

They hiked out to the military checkpoint near the Hwy 3 and 5 intersection from someplace part way up Diablo? That's a hike and a half. :o And Unless they were running, or hitched a ride part of the way, I'll bet it took more than a 12 hours.

But you have to wonder, if the weather conditions were too bad to do the rescue from the Park, why were they even attempting a climb with this bad weather in the forecast.

Quote:

Two members of the party walked 12 hours to get help for Perkins, reaching the El Chinero military checkpoint—between Mexicali and San Felipe—at 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

The other access, through San Pedro Martir Park, was closed due to weather conditions.

SPOT

bajaguy - 4-16-2012 at 08:17 AM

Take SPOT with you and all you have to do is push one button. No hiking out, no leaving your injured buddy. SPOT is the best friend you can have in the outback:

"But you have to wonder, if the weather conditions were too bad to do the rescue from the Park, why were they even attempting a climb with this bad weather in the forecast."

Some climbers think that 'muy macho' winter climbing is the ultimate experience.
Remember a couple years ago when a team got hit hard with a winter blizzard on Mt. Hood and they left a couple of the team behind...
Personally, I like it dry, warm, and mellow for my climbing.

No problem goat. People should explore the reaches of their capabilities. But they should also be charged for the cost of rescue for their indiscretion and thrill seeking.

disagree. i like our fire, police and paramedics and rescue to be no-charge government services. if you charge for back country rescue, you might as well charge for in city fire fighting and paramedics and lifeguards etc.

Fire, police, etc can and do charge for rescue in Arizona if it is not an accident or act of God. Big difference between an act of choice and something like a fire or victim of burglary. But I am sure that will not change your mind.

goldhuntress - 4-16-2012 at 09:48 AM

Sounds like the guy hurt himself, could happen to anyone. There were 5 altogether. Two of his friends were in good enough shape to go for help. His other friends stayed with him. Accidents happen even with the best laid plans and to the most experienced people. I agree with goat, lot of keyboard quarterbacking and speculation going on, as usual, and also with bajaguy, SPOT would have been good to have. It would have been interesting if they had had it and then be able to read about it. It would be good to get a look, well not first hand I guess, but second hand lets say, of the emergency services that the SPOT provides, especially since it all ended well. And since we use it and wonder who and how fast the emergency response is.

All land-management agencies that I am familiar with attempt to charge for rescues of extreme nature as no agency has the funds to cover such events.

If the people that like to engage in risky behavior had to buy "rescue" insurance before embarking on their adventures perhaps they would think twice before taking the sort of extreme risks that they engage in. If not, then let the chips fall where they may.

Ordinary tax payers should not have to foot the bill for those that practice very risky behavior---------that is the current thinking, and is appropriate, IMO.

OK Let me give you another example. We choose to do an other type of sport; Off-Road racing in Baja. T do so we are requiered to fund the ambulance service as a part of out entrance fee. We are also required to carry accident/medical insurance to cover any medical expenses paid for yearly or as a one time fee for any given race. Should these be free as well?

no. but your example was of an organized sporting event. the subject story is about a private party out for a weekend of climbing. your example is irrelevant.

It's not free

Services are paid for by taxes, even if we don't use them.

Most states have a provision to collect for SAR fees incurred.

SPOT has insurance that will reimburse the SAR agency for costs

I am considered by most to be on the left. I believe that the government has a role in providing services to the public. But I think that in your case its about you. You want "free" for the things you enjoy, not necessarily what is for the "public good".
