LA Bay report

My son was on vacation from school so we headed to LA Bay last Wednesday (4/11) for a quick vacation. After a very shaky first night (a 6.9 quake will do that!) I was able to get in a few hours of fishing before the winds kicked up. No action on the surface so just fished the bottom for decent numbers of bass, jawfish and sculpin. For the first time ever I got spiked by one of those sculpin (or scorpionfish or whatever you want to call them) and don't care to ever repeat that again! My hand throbbed for a few hours and then stayed pretty swollen for another two days. The second day was calm as glass so the whole family joined in for the boat ride and fishing was very good for bottom species again. I got plenty to maintain my taco habit for awhile. Other than the 3 hour wait at the border coming home on Sunday it was a good trip. :cool:

yeah, i've had that sculpin pleasure myself. once was enough!

gonna be in bahia 4-30 to 5-4 and hoping to run around the inner islands.

SST services showing a fairly dramatic rise in the last few days in the Sea. Even BOLA is no exception. I'm seeing 63-65 which is pretty good for BOLA in mid-late April.

Of course, that can change rapidly in that area if the tides lift water from THAT Canal San Lorenzo below there.

This warmup could be good news for fishing when you arrive, Woody! Not saying you should go dorado hunting, mind you, but everything bites better when it hits mid 60s in that area.

Heck, I would call mid 60s swimmable for short periods.........if the air is hot.

Stick your thumb in its mouth and bend your index finger under its bottom lip and grab hold, that way it cant spin or flip around you can do this and pull hook without ever using plyers. learned this from deckhands on partyboats done this many times fishing from my kayak. I have been stuck by sculpin before but never using this technique. Grabbing or trying to grab a sculpin with plyers is a poke waiting to happen. I seen more then a few people get it this way.
They are sure good eating though.

No thanks. My hand aren't getting anywhere near that face. One plier goes in the mouth and hold the jaw. The other longnose plier extracts the hook from within. hands never get near the spines. Never been stung.

Dad tells of stepping on one in the bottom of the boat. Yeow.

I cannot believe you all still use pliers???

They sell those slick foot long aluminum rigs that look a little like a calking gun,
that way they never get close to sticking you.

Reach in, grab the hook shank, quick twist and they are in the tank.
