Seafood Prices ?

ligui - 4-22-2012 at 07:06 AM

Hi everyone , yesterday is was told that the oceans are doing very well . So I was wondering how much seafood prices have been dropping in your area ?

:?: La Paz , Ensenada ,Cabo , loreto, GN , Seems to me prices have been on the rise. Is it only my bad choice of places to buy ?

Whats the deal ?

We bought legitimate grande sized shrimp WITH THE HEAD ON for the first time at a big shrimp farming and net dragging town below us in Sonora. 80 pesos/kilo. I thought they were a much better deal than the headless for 120/kilo. Not that much weight in a head and we like to fry some up in cornstarch, a la Asia, and eat them whole. These were not the blue ones but the red ones.

Prices were up this year, slightly, over last year. I think last year (or was it the year before) that there was a temporary ban on shrimp importation into the US and prices REALLY dropped.

ligui, Must be inflation because I'm sure your source for " yesterday is was told that the oceans are doing very well " couldn't be misinformed:o

Hook google the recipe for "chupe de camaron" it is made with the heads as a base for the soup. OMG it is REALLY good.

Out here on the Pacific coast I was told by too many people that the purchase of abalone was forbidden from any source whatsoever, to believe they "were pulling my hair". The cooperativa won't sell it. I asked about "en veda", in season, and they said "No se vende nunca". This sounds really weird but someone mentioned six hundred pesos a kilo. I don't know. I stand confused.

you can buy it canned (processed) but don't be caught with it fresh.

I am also skeptical. only fresh stuff I have seen are the trimmings (and they were not that fresh). I did see someone years ago trying to sell stuff as Abalone in Vizcaino, but whatever it was, it wasn't fresh abalone!

alot of times they sell the first cut off the foot of the ab in the markets. leather is softer! the good stuff goes where the $ is, not to the local mercado....

Here are some recent fish prices in BCS today. Prices range from the beach guys since it's expensive early and less later as the day winds down and the ice melts and the fish is less fresh, also prices vary depending on your friendship with the vendor.

Perico filet = 120/k
Amarrila Atun filet = 50-60/k
Camaron medium = 80-120/k
whole Sierra = 40/k
Bass = 50/k
Lots of white fish filets in the 60/k which is most popular such as

Buckets of Pulpo gathered by a diver

woody with a view - 4-22-2012 at 11:07 AM

that must be late in the day. i see no ice!;D

gnukid - 4-22-2012 at 11:13 AM

This guy catches octopus all day, he told me he smashes them with a rock and grabs them, but I don't know what the process for catching pulpo is, I have heard it's better frozen then unfrozen, though I don't know. But this guy is amazing, he will enter a beach where you are swimming and see very little and he catches pulpo for hours in his bare hands and his rock. I am looking for a picture of my favorite fish store now...

Medium shrimp for 200p a kilo? Is that 20$ US a lb.?:?:

woody with a view - 4-22-2012 at 02:44 PM

use 13 pesos per dollar for comparison. a kilo is 2.2 pounds.:light:

Mula - 4-22-2012 at 02:46 PM

$15.26 at today's XE currency conversion rate.
So 7.63 a US dollar per 1.1 lbs.

Just heard a disturbing consumer news report on LA seafood retail sales. Lots of fake salmon, halibut, etc...it's downright embarrassing to realize the wholesale deceptions in selling faked seafood these days. This survey group ran DNA tests on a large samping of the retail seafood available in public markets in Los Angeles. More than half - 50% plus - of the tested fish were falsely labeled.

What they say it is..it is not. What can a customer do? Run DNA tests on the fillets?

A sign of deminishing stocks of quality fish??

edit to add this p.s.

Going fishing manana....I'll know exactly what I'll be eating for dinner tomorrow. Sure hope it's not 'crow'. ;)

7.63 equates to 10 bucks? I hear people say "I can buy it cheaper at Safeway"..Maybe, but when you figure in the fuel costs from Mulege to San Diego, it may be a bit more...And you arent going to have it for supper tonite...The shrimp we buy are fresh off the boat, in season..and worth every penny....If I wanted to live cheap, I'd drink Ten High instead of George Dickel....Life is too short, not to enjoy it...I cant even imagine doing without fresh shrimp to save 2 bucks....
